School News Items of Interest From Best School In Kentucky The Literary and Debating Society met last Friday In one of the most in meetings pf its existence After several recitations among which those of Misses Hattie Rice and Mabel and Messrs Knight Hanby Walter Clements were received with great applause The event of the evening the debate was listened to by the members of the societ The sub that ambition has of good than off jetResolved barristers in a masterl style on the affirmative were opened by Hon Will Waters who spoke with great force and pathos frequently being forced to discontinue his address by the wails and moans of his sympathetic listeners He was followed by Rev Stanley IIwickednessvehement were his scathing remarks that it was feared for a time that his opponents would sink through the floor be cut down by thedestroying angel before the debate could be brought to in time to save his side from the impending doom predestined for them in Rev Dawsons remarks Mr Ollie Barber appeared and disputed the fact that his side were the only sinners and declared that the negative were deeper in the mire than the affirmative were in the mud Dr Shultz next brought forth the arguments for the negative and by striking examples from history pro ceeded to show that all great thins in history had been done because ofthe ambition of some hero He pointed to himself as a striking example ambitious youth but oji being Otthe tioned by the affirmative as young lady was the object of his a nbi tion he declined to answer We had awaited his response with eagerness and were and Louise Medley helped materi ally in the success of her side Sisters in peace but enemies in war Such was an example to the society set by the next speaker Miss Dorothy MpElroy who controverted her sisters arguments Shedeclar d her only ambition to be able to entertain her suit ors of Sunday nights without incurring the Profesors displeasure of Monday This ambition she said only caused harmIhad other longings and aspirations and believed they tended to good She would not commit herself when questioned as to these but rumor has it that in some way we have not learned in just what capacity one of Judge Thurmans horses had something to do with it Mr Leo Simms tbje Irish orator next graced the speakers stand His remarks were perhaps as eloquent as ever heard in our hall and were replete with epigrams and telling sen ten es His gestures intonation and force were irreproachable and when he had concluded his fiery address the audience inspired with his ready wit and convincing arguments foresaw success for Ute side that declared that- everything good and great in the world had been done without ambition Monsieur Barber our orator of the sunlit locks came forth with winning grace a typical picture of a youth ambitious to win the debate He attacked the arguments of his opponents and painted a touching picture of Mr Simms led on by the finger of ambition and having won the applause of the New World by his eloquence at last crossing the briny deep and in a masterful address before His Brittannic Majesty winning Irelands Freedom Then the crowning feature of it all the pictures of Simms the Irish orator decorating- the walls of every Irish hut made us all swell with pride in the anticipation of our fellow schoolmates success After the conclusion of his remarks Miss to Versailles Todays election was quiet and oc derly Church bells were rung at inter yals throughout the day and an allday prayer meeting was held by the wok en The temperance people are jubilant over their victory Nicholasville Ky Sept 20 Nicho lasville went dry todayby a majority of 18 The result of the election WfII a surprise to many people and a greit disappointment to the whisky men The victory was the more remarkable because the local option faction did not spend a cent for votes Much credit w given to the women who held prayer meetings in the Southern Methodist church during Jthe day served coffee and sandwiches at the polls while a band of children sang temperance on the street The negro vote which the whisky men had been claiming went largely for temperance A large crowd are excited over the strange condition of Mrs I George Burgess who with her hue band moved here from Etoile this county five months ago Since locat ing here Mrs Burgess became afflicted with a malady said to be consumption beengrdwingworse that she would not live through the a 4ay She sank gradually until 11 oclock last night when she apparently died Several women were called in nd tie body was laid out preparatory to dressing it for burial While they were waiting for the burial robe the corpse surprised all present by mov ing An investigation revealed that the woman was breathing From the Further Trouble is Apprehended Atlanta Ga Sept 24 Unaweil by he presence of thette troops Over 000 men strong who are patrolling the principal streets of the city some of the rowdy elements still thirsting for negro blood tried to reorganize the mob that successfully lynched 11 negroes Saturday The rioters managed to gather only a few dangerous crowds one of which quickly dispatched another negro In the afternoon This man like those killed previously was apparently innocent of crime Two negroes had been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the assault on Mrs Arnold The prisoners were taken to the womans house but she seemed unable to positively iden tlfy either of them as her assailant She thought however that one of theme who called himself Jack Murray was the guilty man She refused to make any charge against Henry Moore his companion Took the Wrong Man The officers started to Jail with both negroes but on the way Jack Murray who was suspected by Mrs Arnold escaped The officers continued with Jack Moore On Marietta street someone raised the cry that the officers had Mrs Arnolds assailant Almost instantly a crowd surrounded the officers took the negro and rid dled him with bullets With ills dying breath he asserted his innocence The tragedy was witnessed by many people among them some cftildren who were playing on the street Gov Terrell having placed the city practically under martial law there was no general recrudescence during the Sabbath of the negro hunting by white mobs which resulted In the death of 12 negroes and two white men and the wounding more
