AVerdict For 1000 Given J Rich Smith In Telephone Case Injunction t Granted A case of more than ordinary importance tried in the Circuit Court here last week as that of J Rich Smith etc vs the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Co Mr Smith and a num ber of other persons of the St Rose neighborhood built a neighborhood line within a mile and a half of Springfield thetcompany would connect its lines with this neigh borhood lline The Telephone Company refused to do this hence a suit for damages was filed by Mr Smith and others and the court asked to grant a mandatory injunction compelling The Cumberland Telephone Co to connect its lines with the above mentioned neighborhood line Afterquite a warm contest the jury awarded the plaintiff damages in the sum of 1000 and the court movement the Prohibition movement and the Antisaloon League movement were or are protests upon againsttwoour civilization and unfortunately for us connected with our tradewe refer to drunkenness and to those saloons which are conducted in disreputable manner or in such a way as to demor alize rather than to elevate those who patronize themand we the delegates to this convention of the wine and to mankind From the first paragraph of the above we learn that these local option movements are protest upon the part of good men and women against two oft the greatest evils connected with our civilizationTJdrunkenness and tough saloons saloons conduct d in such a way as to demoralize rather than to elevate those who patronize themi Right here permit this question Fath ers mothers wives of Washington county can you recall a single instance in which the saloon ever elevated your son or husband If you can please tell The Sun we would like to print the story Now notice these liquor deal ers admit that drunkenness and dlsrep tuable saloons should bje suppressed But how are we to suppress them Would you attempt to suppress drunk enness by licensing s That would be sillier than trying to cure col ic by inhaling wind and eating turnips Suppose you had a contract to cure drunkards what would be your first steps after you had given them the usual course of calomel and Keeleys gold that the efforts of society shojld be towards developing it into such an institution We are convinced that this can only helpinw c i his saloon in accordance wit the demands of public sentiment and by a swift cancellation of the censes of all who violate the law and public sentiment We are convinced that discrimination questiorand punishments substantial in the one cam arid merciless in the other and this should be continued with patience and persistency until the business is conj r trolled by men who will feel a pride in eoneman kind As to the first paragraph The sa loona workingmans club
