bare the aabsurdities of false arguments This is exactly the case in some comparisons made by the Tennessee AntiSaloon Journal between Jellico Ky and Jel lien Tennessee The towns are divided by the Kentucky line and therefor stand out in bold contrast But thej contrast shows that the argument ol the liquor men that no saloons mean dead town is both base and baseless We quote from The Journal After a hard fight the saloons were put ont of Jellico Tennessee June 30 1903 The liquor men and shine short sighted business men argued that to do away with the saloons would hurt the business of the town This argument was emphasized by the fact that there were saloons in r elli o Kentucky just scions the state line and that the money would go to the Kentucky side of the town We will let the facts speak In June 1903 when saloons went out the population of the town was 1200 Now after two years and nine months wIth- out saloons the population is 3000 In 1902 with saloons the business of the town was about 400000 In 1905 the business was 1500000 When the saloons went out there were 18 stores now there are 42 Now Jellico has six wholesale houses dry goods 1 furniture 1 hardware groceries and 1 green grocery The gain business has been from one hundred to four hundred per cent When the saloons were running there were four public school teachers throe whites and one colored and obout 200 An impression prevails thatthe stat ute against shipping whisky into local option districts in this State doGS not apply to foreign shipment for therea son that under the operation of the Interstate Commerce law it can be shipped in from other StatesJ This idea is erroneous The express com nics have issued bulletins to their directing them to examine all suspicious looking packages and to quire of the shipper what they contain he refuses to answer the package is not to be received for These companies recognized that it a is violation of law to carry whiskey into any prohibition territory of Kentucky whether shipped from some other point Kentucky ot from another State This question had already been pass d on by Court of Appeals whiskey was sent by express from Cincinnati in the State of Ohio to London in Laura An Odd Sale Ed OBrien bought of a party this week 27 head of stock hogs averaging 120 pounds immediate delivery at 6 cents per pound He turned around pupils Now there are six white and 2 colored teachers and 605 pupils The jffhe principal is paid a salary of 1200 the other teachers 50 per mbnth When the saloons went out the as sensed value of the property was 5180 000 nuts 550000 a gain of 320000 jr When the saloons were in Jellico the taxes were 225 on the 100 without saloons twice the number of- Bleachers and three times the number W fjuplls the taxes are 125 on the 100 When the saloons went out there were 100000 now 300000 a gain of 200000 The going out of the saloons cans d an increased attendance utt churches Sunday schools and public schools and the moral not be disputed When and how had they planned the acci dental meeting What had been their method of communication And above all what were the contents of the messages exchanged Were they of a purely personal nature or did they comprehend Injury to the principality of Graustark Beverly could not In her heart feel that Baldos was doing any thing Inimical to the country he served and yet her duty and loyalty to Yetlve made It Imperative that the transac tion should be reported at once A word to Qulnhox and Ravone would be seized and searched for the mysterlous paper This however looked utterly unreasonable for the vagabonds were armed and In force while Yetlve was accompanied by but three men who could be depended upon Baldos un der the conditions was not to be reckoned upon for support On the other hand If he meant no harm It would be cruel even fatal to expose him to this charge of duplicity And while she turned these troublesome alternatives over In her mind the opportunity to act was lost Ravone and his men were gone and the harm If any was Intended was done From time to time she glanced back at the guard His face was Imperturb able even sphinxlike In Its steadiness She decided to hold him personally to account At the earliest available mo meat she would demand an explana Lion of his conduct threatening him If necessary If he proved obdurate there was but one course left open to her She would deliver him up to the jus tice he had outraged Hour after hour went by and Beverly suffered more than she could have told The dam age was done and the chance to undo It was slipping farther and farther out 7 of her grasp She began to look upon herself as the vilest of traitors There was no silver among the clouds that marred her thoughts that afternoon It was late in the day when the party returned to the castle tired out Bev erly was the only one who had no long Ing to seek repose after the fatiguing trip Her mind was fun of unrest It was necessary to question Baldos at once There could be no peace for her until she learned the truth from him The strain became so great that at last she sent word for him to attend her In the park He was to accompany the men who carried the sedan chair In which she had learned to sit with a de lightful feeling of being In the eight eenth century- In a far corner of the grounds now gray in the early dusk Beverly bade the bearers to set down her chair and leave her In quiet for a few minutes The two men withdrew to a respectful + distance whereupon she called Baldos to her side Her face was flushed with anxiety You must tell me the truth about that transaction with Ravonb she said coming straight to the point- I was expecting this your highness said he quietly The shadows of night were falling but she could distinguish the look of anxiety In his dark eyes Well she insisted impatiently You saw the notes exchanged Yes yes and I command you to tell me what they contained It was the most daring thing IYour highness I cannot tell you what passed between us It would be treacherous he said firmly Beverly gasped In sheer amazement Treacherous Good heaven sir To whom do you owe allegianceto me or to Ravone then she trembled He was supposed to know her as the wife of Grenfall Lorry and yet he had boldly shown his love for her It depends altogether on the other mans wife he said and she looked up quickly It was too dark to see his face but something told her to press the point no further Deep down In her heart she was beginning to re joice In the belief that he had fount her out tf he still believed amaze me1 I have seen Franz often he con fessed easily He Is an excellent messenger So It would seem We must keep a lookout for him He Is the gobe tween for you all I see Did you learn to say you all la America he asked Her heart gave a great leap There was something so subtle In the query that she was vastly relieved Never mind about that sir You wont tell me what you said In your note to Ravoue II cannot he gave you one In return If you are perfectly sincere Baldos you will hand that note over to me It shall go no further l swear to you If as you vow It does not jeopardize Graustark Now sir Is too dark to read It here Without a word he handed the paper to her and called the chair bearers to whom he gave Instructions that brought her speedily beneath one of the park tamps She afterward recalled the guilty im pulse which forced her to sit on the telltale note while the men were carry ing her along In ithe driveway When It was quite saf she slyly opened the missive Ills Imnd closed be1tweenThe Washington side is divided in two precincts Fredericktown and number nine and I am proud to say all or nearly all are for local option By the way have you seen any of the litera ture the whisky men are passing around Well wouldnt it be a disgrace to the grand old Commonwealth to close the saloons Some say they are for whisky because without licensed saloons there would be bootleggars blind tigers etc some say it would kill the town others say they would goelse where to get whisky Say isnt it a commonsense proposition to all that a saloon with its name on the windows and over the doors whefe they mix drinks of various tastes is much more convenient and enticing to the ones who are prone to temptation than to walk up and down the allies and through the stables chasing some nigger with a bot tie of whisky in one pocket and a glass in the other to get behind abox or barrel to take a drink Do you suppose there would be as much drinking done No Its very easy to get drinks in the saloons and invite in friends to take one with you and in this way take two or three each before coming out hand then twq or three more trips and they are readyfor jail or to go home if they can get there to disturb the peace of their families as is often the case suchdexcuses as some stick my head under the fence and like a skunk stink myself todeath The telephone from Blincoe to Bards
