bare the aabsurdities of false arguments This is exactly the case in some comparisons made by the Tennessee AntiSaloon Journal between Jellico Ky and Jel lien Tennessee The towns are divided by the Kentucky line and therefor stand out in bold contrast But thej contrast shows that the argument ol the liquor men that no saloons mean dead town is both base and baseless We quote from The Journal After a hard fight the saloons were put ont of Jellico Tennessee June 30 1903 The liquor men and shine short sighted business men argued that to do away with the saloons would hurt the business of the town This argument was emphasized by the fact that there were saloons in r elli o Kentucky just scions the state line and that the money would go to the Kentucky side of the town We will let the facts speak In June 1903 when saloons went out the population of the town was 1200 Now after two years and nine months wIth- out saloons the population is 3000 In 1902 with saloons the business of the town was about 400000 In 1905 the business was 1500000 When the saloons went out there were 18 stores now there are 42 Now Jellico has six wholesale houses dry goods 1 furniture 1 hardware groceries and 1 green grocery The gain business has been from one hundred to four hundred per cent When the saloons were running there were four public school teachers throe whites and one colored and obout 200 An impression prevails thatthe stat ute against shipping whisky into local option districts in this State doGS not apply to foreign shipment for therea son that under the operation of the Interstate Commerce law it can be shipped in from other StatesJ This idea is erroneous The express com nics have issued bulletins to their directing them to examine all suspicious looking packages and to quire of the shipper what they contain he refuses to answer the package is not to be received for These companies recognized that it a is violation of law to carry whiskey into any prohibition territory of Kentucky whether shipped from some other point Kentucky ot from another State This question had already been pass d on by Court of Appeals whiskey was sent by express from Cincinnati in the State of ACQUITTED Killed Henry SJiewmaker In Ll nois a Year Ago lHarrod burg Democrat Fred Brit tong formerly of this county who sho and killed Henry Shewmaker at Loving ton Ill about a year ago was acquitted ba jury at the final triahat Sullivan Ill last Thursday The case was bitterly fought by the prosecution bill it was the general opinion among the people of the town who had watched the progress of the trial that Britton would be exhonerated as he made out a clear case of self defence The story of the crime for which Brit ton was tried is wc remembered by our readers asa full account of the killing was published in this paper at the time it occurred The killing took place the depot at Lovington where a drow of several hundred persons had gath fired occasioned by the arrest of a CharlesMarsnlow officer by the name of James Moore a former resident of Washington county Marsh was being taken to Decatur Ill for safekeeping as the feeling against him at Lovington was so high that it was feared a mob would take him from the jail at that place Britton was passing the depot and sewastold of the killing of Moore he remarked that he was sorry and said that he was afraid that Marsh had gotten into Serious trouble Shewmaker who1 was present alused Britton and made an- attempt to puH his pistol when Britton also pulled hisgun Shewmaker grab bed Bntton by the arm and told him that he would take hfs gun away from thivBritton fired at Shewmaker twice one ball strfcking him in the breast and the second in the abdomen He died al most instantly Britton was arrests d and taken to Decateur where he had been in jail since the killing The trial was entered into Wednes carhee 10 oclock The Judge adjourned court and aid he would reopen to receive their verdict as soon as one was reached The jury reported at 2 oclock Friday morning and court was opened4 and the vverdict received at 3 oclock The court room was crowded with verdictking of the jury was read Fred Britton left here about five years ago and had been working on a farm near Loyington up to the killing of Shewmaker Shewmaker former livedat lip ekville in Washington county htIcousin several years ago bystriking him in th head with a
