and 1N Near Louisville Monday Morning Nine People Killed and Many In jured Evening Post The breaking of a the wheel of a Louisville and rNashville passenger coach at Seventh and Hill streets at 756 oclock this morning hurled eight people to instant and horrible death find left a score of others pinioned in the splintered debris of the train mangled and bleeding At the end of its journey and in sight of the depot with the passengers pre paring to start on the business of the day a trival accident to the train brought appalling disaster- A moment after it had reached Sev enth and Hill streets and was pulling into the yards of the Tenth street Depot two of the coaches had been smashed into kindling and their passen gers killed or mangled The loss of lite is the greatest ever incurred in a railroad accident in Lou isvllle The train was No 24 fast mail from Knoxville due here at 8 oclock It Consisted of the engine combination baggage and postal car a combination smoking and day coachand two deepI era The two coaches Were demolished he rest of the train escaping Among the dead are William Pruitt ofuHaven Among the injuredjare Charles Speiss New Haven both le s fractured amputation necessary Murray Samuels Lebanon Junction hay and grain deal er right leg broken and internal injuries John Boon of Lebanon Ky contusion of right le The explanation pf the wreck is as follows The train was on the inbound track and on the north side of the Hill street viaduct there is a switch which leads to tHe Quast shoe factorson Levering street The locomotive and combination baggage and mail carpassed this switch in safety A flange on the forward truck of the smoker broke as it struck this switch throwing the switchopen The rear trucks of the smoker ran in on the switch followed by the ladies coach and two sleepers The smoking car did notbreak loose from the front of the train and was dragged 200 feet along the ties until the side of the car struck a string of freight cars at the northend of the switch The front of the smoking car was uninjured but for ten feet to the rear the entire right hand side of the car was demolished and the roof torn off The front end of the ladies coach which was vestibuledwas stove in for twenty feet seats being torn up and all the windows smashed out The hot water heater which was in the forward end of this car was torn loose from its fastening and hurled to the middle of the car killing Mr Cole man in its flight The engine and bag gage car were stopped twenty feet from the point of the crash and in less than two hoursafter the wreck occurred every trace of the disaster had been removedThe and Post of Monday even ing stated that Mr John McChordof Lebanon was seriously injured but it develops that he received only a few slight bruises BODY Of James Canter Whose Death Occurred In the Philippines Arrives In Springfield The remains of James Canter who died in the Philippine Islands March 29 of malarial fever arrived here last night and will te interred in the Cath olic cemetery at this place Mr Canter had served about four years in the United States Army and was recognized by his superior officers as a braye sol dier The deceased was a son of Mrs Kate Canter who formerly resided hfre but who now lives in Louisville and was about twentyfive years old- young man had imany friends in Springfield who were grieved Fredericktown one day last veekt think it was Saturday and local option was in full force Mr Welshs license ran out last Monday and could not have it renewed until to dayI must say Fredericktown looked different to me to what it generally does on Saturday And although Mr Welsh beats any saloon keeper that ever was there I must say that more than ever I was in favor of local option after y visit there In this neighborhood Gasburg and Blincoe all are in favor of local option and it is bound to carry We are all proud to see The Springfield Sun make such a noble fight for it Mr Gore has an ideal and he is not afraid Ito fight for it no matter what it costs He is a gentleman in every sense of the word allowing every one his own honest opinion but fighting hard for what he thinks is but took two prizes out of our four entries Lynne Bush won first place in Grammar and John S McElroy second in English Lit erature Friday afternoon in the athletic events Frank McCabe won first in the fifty yard dash for boys under fifteen John S McElroy won second place in the hundrd yard dash His recordwas specially fine as he was set back twelve feet by the tarter for false tarts and ended Springfield + Springfields wearing they brought openedThursday 4 scorin Saturday morning with public oral spelling One of the most remarkable contests in spelling ever seen in the state occurred between the representators all girlsof Pleas urevillej Mt Sterling and Lebanon After an hours search through the book for difficult words Prof Bell who was giving them out gave up his effort to spell them down and gave three first place medals Our delegation left in the afternoon and reached home after supper Satur day Our school feels proud that she re ceived so many medals but everyone both in our delegation and in fact most of the visitors at the Tournament feel greatly chagrined that we did not receive first place in three or four places where we got seconds Especially was there disappointment in both of Miss Haydons contests as in the opinion seemingly of everyone of the audience except the five men whoseopinion in the end counted she undoubtedly deserved first place in both being as the principal of several disinterestedschools said entirely out of her class Our delegates were royally enter tained and all have tender spots in their hearts for the kind people who so generously and hospitably opened their homes to us The Sun has been informed that the the next tournament will be held at Springfield ACQUITTED Harrodsburg Policemen Acquitted i of Murder Charge 1 Harrodsburg Ky May 27The Anderson county jury callod here to try onItook just fifteen minutes to return a verdict of not guilty The jury retired to their room just as the clock struck 2 organized and on the first ballot unanimously voted for a verdict of acquittal They came back into the court room and reported their verdict so quickly that it could hardly be believed The jury left on the 5 oclock train this afternoon for them homes in and near Lawrenceburg Britton and Herron were heartily congratulated upon their prompt vindication by their many friendsBritton and Herroii killed Walter Stotts and Sam C Black in a pistol duel on the streets growing out of their at tempt as policemem to arrest Stotts Britton was shot twice through the head but recovered They were tried for killing Black before a Mercer coun ty jury and were acquitted Brittons brother was acquitted of a charge of murder in Illinois yesterday having killed a man there who had gone out with him from this cou- ntyEMPHATIC + CHARGE J Delivered to the Grand Jury By Judge Thurman l Circuit court convenedMonday Judge Thurman presiding Mondays session was a short one being taken up with the organization of the grand jury the charge thereto and the assignment of the cases on the docket for trial Judge Thurman as usual was very strong and emphatic in his charge to the grand jury and among the subjects touched upon were seining carrying concealed deadly weapons violation of the Sunday law selling or furnishing liquor to minors and gambling The Judge pointed out thatthe above uifenself were covered by statutes and that it was the duty of the grand juiyI and that their oaths demanded that they shouldprobe these matters and if they found aguilty party to indict This must be done regardless of their indi vidual ideas of the righteousness of the law Judge Thurman said in to gambling that hehnderstood a good deal of gambling was going on in Spring negrowthe high roller was unmolested The Judge said
