INDTHE SUN WILL MAKE A FIGHT FOR LOCAL OPTION A newspaper report says a saloon keeper at Southbend Ind has built a new business house It is said to be a beautiful structurea sort of a fasci mating trap into which many a poor fellow will walkjust to listen to the music for a brief periodbut the song- from sirenlips will lead him on oer rough ways and miserable till hestag gers into the great boiling cesspool ofI Destruction The buildings decorations are fashioned after kings castles and its innumerable brilliances flash hundreds of dazzling colored lights up on thefashionable fellow1as he stands and gulps down with many a smack that which has already tainted his heart and stranded his soul in a wilderness of sin where there is naught of lovethe home of misery and the abiding place ofdevil FinerY paid for by the fathers of starving children The floor of this magnificent building is decorated with fancyshaped gold pieces Gold which had been exchanged by hungry paupers forrum Gold which rightfully belongs to the weeping wo man in the hut of the forest and to the M14 child that wails for bread gold which Appetite wrested from the death clutches of the starved and starving gold which God gave in its rudeness toe earth and the earth gave to art gold to be trod upon by a gang of spew akin whisk soaked fellows while children starve The structuture no doubt is beauti ful especially is this true of the floor its trimmings of glistening gold alone would make it soa palace for a vom sting gang ofurich drunkardstoof- ine for the shabby fellow whose fortune has already been spent whose t gold has gone to help decorate the stamping place of the whisky shop too fine forhim and he must go with a beggars purse to the filthy disease breeding dive and plead and whine and pray for rum But if the rescuing hand doesnt lead him to other paths r the rich fellow of the pretty saloon will soon join the poor fellow of the filthy dive and will take up his abode mid awful debauchery and will revel with criminals and will fallat last into hells abyss a part of earths filthiest garbage Ask the tramp how much gold he gave to beautify the floor 6f the grogshop at Southbend Ind And probably he will tell you he gave his allot he may be too busy cursing his fate to answer Then ask his deserted his miserable wife and she will point to a magnificent residence across the way and say That was once our happy home Ask his grayheaded mother and she will tell you that hundreds of fertile acres were once histhe old homestead down in the valley the plantation of his father Ask the pinchedfaced lad and he weeps andsays The beautiful lit tIe pony which just passed down the street was once mine but a man came and took it away Ask those who tellwereyou a sad story a story ofa blasted life a wrecked homea story of broken hearts Ask them and they will tell you that some where out in the world is a vagabond who was once an honored t citizen and who was the possessor of a happy home A tramp poor fellow Every day to him is without a beam andevery path without a rose Misery ie his and pleasure is not eternally Hope is dead and all that is before him is an open grave and a yawning hell And he gave his gold to beautify the floor of the grogshop at Southbcnd Ind The convict also has a sadstory for i he too has giv n told to beautify the floor of thegrdg hop at Southbend Ind Gold he ar himselfI heapedJupon brought distinct m to his home and rent his wifes heart jnfith a terrible sorrow Gold he gave and the cruel world points to his chid asH the child of a convict Gold he g vela d in the damp prison cell in the cold gloomy awful prison cell devils haunt his dreams at night and horrible nt m are his daily companions and theJhost of the friend he murderedstands ly the iron door like a prison guard and ails and pleads and moans And this s not all His crazed mind wanders bac to the home of his youthand he see fatherland mother happy and proud planning a great future for the boy and gathering in a rich harvest for him Then he sees them weepingIsees them in the grave And this not all He sees hiswifea isI more horrible than all the resta ger to his soul She is begging for bread Ile hears her pleading for food and he sees the he rUes turn her away emptyhanoed and he hears her pray for the starymg child He sees her sulted by a beastly human and maddened he plunges against his prison bars and beats himself and shrieks then falls unconscious to the stone floor of the prisona resjthe seldom knows But soon life flames again and in its flaming his soul is more intensely burned for to him tne recovery of life is the recovery of lifes miseries Again he sees his wife this time turned into the street he sees her shivering with cold he sees her die He sees his child out in the world and he sees the world frown upon it and he tries to pray for well is he aware that a frowning world breeds criminals And he prays but while he prays thd great iron door of the prison streaks and he turns and sees his son ina c mvicts garb rand with a terrible oath u pon his lips he dies And he gave his g aid to beantify the floor of the gtogshoj at SouthbendIndi Go into your almsl ousesj go imo ypur insane asylums go nto the w rld of sin of poverty of rime and you will find a host of poor ellows who gave their gold to beautify the floor of the grogshop at South mf Ind This is not mere sentiment as some people may be wont to call it nor is it a scraping at thesky just because we feel that way but it is Truthpureand simple not nearly so vividly pictured as are the little instances almost daily presented to us by the ac tors themselves in Lifes great drama Ihave not resided in Springfield long enough to see any man contribute all his earthly goods toward beautifying the floor of the grogshop at South bend Ind but if and this county have not they are thiitownindeed in a list to I can not speak for Washing ton county but IS a htUctown- in Kentucky where twentyfive years of my life wore spent There I saw this horrible tragedy enacted more than one time by tragedians vho acted true to life but unto death Jorrible in the ex treme revolting I heseen boys grow to debauched manhoalr become vaga bonds I have seen their old homesteads and their fertile acres go to pay debts contracted in debauchrxI have seen grayheaded fathers p rayheaded moth era go to their graves sorrowstricken I have seen sons an daughters and wives devote a good part of their lives to prevent the father nd husband from I t giving the old homestead to beautify the floor of the grogshop at South bend Ind I have seen the pony of th little boy led away by a man T have seen the wives of convicts begging I have seen the sons of convicts led hand cuffed through the thoroughfares to a felons cell I have seen onetime prosperous citizens made subjects of charity and I have seen bright intellects destroyed I have seen all of these things because men gave their gold to beautify the floor of the grogshop at Southbend Ind 1 have seen coughof the saloon to convince met t it is not a good thing therefo I oppose it With those whq believe the saloon is la good thing I shall have no quarrel Theyhavea right to their opinion I have a right to mine When the proper time comes I shall present my argu ments I have many and variedones I shall attempt to show whv local option will be beneficial to Soringfield and Washington count why business will improve and why property will in crease in value 1 A gentleman who resides in the county came to me Jsst County Court day and wanted to knowhow The Sun stands on this local option question H While not definit iitatemend has ever been made as o my intentions I thought the issue of two or three weeks ago would convim e most Anybody that The Sun would n ake a fight for local option And rig it here permit the statement that The Sun intends to make an honorabl fight for local option against the saloon in Washington county not against the saloondeeper I have been warned that a fightof this nature will do The Sun no good anti it has been suggested that I ought to be neutral perhaps a few have gone so far as to intimate that such a course would be ruinous but with all of this I have decided to lend the as sistance of The Sun to the cause of lo cal option There is no need to be meallymouthed about the matter there is no need to beat around the bush A newspaper cant be neutral during a fight of this nature lit cant carry wa teftin both shoulders it can not afford to be indifferent Believing that local option is righthaving been taught it from early childhood rand haying always believed that man ought to get into the f ring line when a principle is at stakeI answer to the roll call and take rank as a private in the battalions which are now forming to do battle for local option Rogers Gore MR MA YES Commissioner for Washington County During Home Coming Week There is now no doubt that Washington county willbe well stopped school Arrangements for the picnic while not entirely completed by the faculty have been detailed by many of our young people individually We have heard of one young lady so popular as to have four ways to go zre await ng her decision with interest The trip to Harrodsburg is also being detailed by various ones of the students The professors have pledged themselves to make the trip on fifty native home Such a pilgrimage with such devotion as it will have has seldom ever been seen Worlds Fairs have been held where vast throngs come to see the worlds wonders Reunions have come bringing together former comrades of the great four years war but never before have the natives ot one state scattered far apart turned with one impulse to revisit their former hrfmes Never did so many people at one time come home as will meet in Louisville next month Coming Home What a wealth of meaning those two words carry with them God pity the man who never got a welcome home The picture of the knight starting out on his adven tures is truly inspiring but when covered with honor he returns to the bosom of his proud mother when he comes home we have the grander scene Oh the distant desert at night his dreams have been all of that home Mid the glamour of foreign ourts he has ever kept his native home before his gaze At length the way seems long glories seem empty he draws his rein toVards home He counts the hours and urges on his horse that he may get there the sooner At length the home of his boyhood looms up before him What to him wer glories and honors beside the memories he cherished of that home For forty or fifty years Kentucky has been sending forth her young knights Many of them have attained HORROR Of the California Earthquake As Seen By a Former Washington County Lady The following letter written a few hours after the California earthquake was received by Mr Geo Qocanougher Santa Rosa Cal April 20 Dear Brothers Fathers and All My God how can I write this letter We are all safe but so dazed we know not how to realize the awfulness of the scene of desolation and devastation I had expected to write to youof Easter joys but its from 5a house of weeping and distressing scenes instead The shockof earthquake came at 510 Wednesday the 18th such a merciful hour justlight and yet before people had gone to business houses The shock lasted one minute but it seemed an hour and the roar was so awful a voice could scarce be h ard The Lord cer tainly was good tbufinone of us hurt and our hquse left standing and only Ours and one other chimney in all the North part of town and maybe allover town We live next door to the hospital so my work has been at home i have seen but little except crushed bleeding and dying people We gathered all the beds and bcddinrfor the hospital as soon as we to carry jn twenty crushed people there myself Hospitals are opened in every building considered safe We had one of the most beautiful cities in the world but almost in an in stant it was destroyed The whole business street is an utter loss courthouse postoffice everything except a bakery fell into the street not a drug store grocery or business house ofany kind left Our new fourstory brick hotel two new threestory bricks the new stone Masonic Temple and stone library were totally destroyed in fact there was not qne stone left standing on another 1n townl Fire broke out in several places and as we had no water most everything burned The drug stores and lodging houses burned first and oh so many burned to death Here I stopped to get the stretcher ready to carry Sin a Chinaman who is mashed to pieces CIIThere are two parties here for funer Church isthemorgue I saw positions of glory and honor Others have humsbier of their native state that nothing can rob them of Nd state in the union retains theaffection of its children awav from home so much as does Kentucky What a time these wilt be when this multitude from all directions begin that great hqmecoming All of them will meet in Louisville and there will do honor to their state They will view the scenes of their old metropolis But with all this it will not be a full welcome unless they revisit their old home in Kentucky Let ug have a homecoming in Spring field A great time all the old citizens of the townwill have when they come together When one revisits the town now after several years absence what a welcome does he get One of our old residents who returned for a short visit last fall said he had never elsewhere felt the Springfield Handshake When allof them get back and talk over old days when things were bet ter than they are now and lose them selves in the land of youth Springfield will truly be gay Let us by all means havehomecomi g If held immediately after the main affair in Louisville it could not be a great undertaking Let all our fold boys away from home come bac Perhaps they have been borne down upon by the years and life seems heavy Let them come back arid see the comrdesof their lost youth talk over old tmes and rensit that happy time of fife where the flowers bloom fair and the wind blows soft and there dwell peace and contentment and abiding calm rtwenty dead bodies there at one time yesterday Theyiare being claimed and carried off by friends But my God rare ruined financially and will have t ave help We cant leave here now and what we have is worth nothing We must stay while we are needed We paid i800 cash for a home in town and only leftus 9 in the bank destroyedI but in to buy willpro vide We are young enough to work again and there are many reason that in order to get the best laws it is necessary to Have alt the facts and arguments presented If on the other hand by lobbying is meant the offering of money or other considerations calculated to be of benefit hot to the people as- a whole but to the member of the legislature who has a vote one must come at once to the opnion that lobbying is not only not neces hOflD4tinfluence was ordained and installed a ruling elder in that church July 3 1887 In 1903 having purchased a home near Springfield Kynnd having removed to it with his family he transfered his membe to the church at that place He dielOctobcr5 1903 after a long suffering from typhoid fever On August 2 1886 he was married to The1wifewas son William and Ehzabetn Smith Durrett both of whom were reared in the Big Spring community and were members of the Big Spring Presbyterian church William Durrett Sr being an elder To these pioneer Presbyterians God gave tvyelve children who were reared in the nurture and admonition of the Lord that Lord has proved covenant keeping God Five of those children are still living active workers in the kingdom of his grace and the seven who have died died in the faith of their fathers W 11 Durrett was an active level leaded aggressive and honestminded business man from early boyhood exhibiting an aptitude for management of affairs His judgment was comprehensive and his executive skill unusual He succeeded in his business enterprises and won through them and by them the confidence of those who knew him They trusted his judgment and his honesty of purpose and heart He was fair and and considerate of others and even in his trading to which he gave much time in his last years he was esteemed an upright man His home was his pride his castle its hospitality proverbial and within its gates lhe stranger found heartiest welcome A guest in that home tommanded its full resources 1to administer to his comfort There was no demonstration courItesystranger a member of the household In the fear of the LordH he was the headof his household but a more ten der husband and father 1 have never known His wife in delicate health for a loug time was guarded by his loving thoughtfulness from every possible annoyance and given the fullest freedom of companionship with her sband His children were companions to him and yet reverenced the father and recognized fully the fathers authority His home was a Christian home ordered in the fear of God As a friend he was true and loyal Kindly and considerate he made friends by showing himself friendly The chosen Ones who were admitted into the inner circle of his affections who knew him best loved him most and rested upon his friendship with the supremest confidence and trust Not a faultless man rio but a man with all mans frailties a mans pas sions ambitions aspirations and hopes a man made godly and true be the in dwelling of Gods grace through Jesus Christ a Christian man His faith was simple and trustful asa childs faith humble and teachable5 a heroic faith that endured the trials and withstood the temptationsof the life thathe lived resting upon the promises of God and God failed him not in the fulfilment of those promises Though he stumbled and fell sometime he lay never from under defeat but carne up from the fall to strive harder for victory And through faith he was more than conqueror God gave him the victory through Christ To his church he gave loyal service striving to upbuild its influence and en large its activities a liberal contributor to its financial claims he gave it far more than money His pastor found him a constant friend and a wise coun sellora coworker who was willing and ready to bear his fair share oC responsibility and authority as a fellow elder with him The church made him an elder because they trustedhim and as an elder they loved him He has gone to give an account of his stewardship and we may comfort our hearts with this hope in Christ he trusted in Christ he labored and in Christ he will reach his reward God bless and comfort the hearts madb sad by the separation from him May the Godof all grace be more than husband keepingGod Danger From The
