trap into which many a poor fellow will walkjust to listen to the music for a brief periodbut the song- from sirenlips will lead him on oer rough ways and miserable till hestag gers into the great boiling cesspool ofI Destruction The buildings decorations are fashioned after kings castles and its innumerable brilliances flash hundreds of dazzling colored lights up on thefashionable fellow1as he stands and gulps down with many a smack that which has already tainted his heart and stranded his soul in a wilderness of sin where there is naught of lovethe home of misery and the abiding place ofdevil FinerY paid for by the fathers of starving children The floor of this magnificent building is decorated with fancyshaped gold pieces Gold which had been exchanged by hungry paupers forrum Gold which rightfully belongs to the weeping wo man in the hut of the forest and to the M14 child that wails for bread gold which Appetite wrested from the death clutches of the starved and starving gold which God gave in its rudeness toe earth and the earth gave to art gold to be trod upon by a gang of spew akin whisk soaked fellows while children starve The structuture no doubt is beauti ful especially is this true of the floor its trimmings of glistening gold alone would make it soa palace for a vom sting gang ofurich drunkardstoof- ine for the shabby fellow whose fortune has already more intensely burned for to him tne recovery of life is the recovery of lifes miseries Again he sees his wife this time turned into the street he sees her shivering with cold he sees her die He sees his child out in the world and he sees the world frown upon it and he tries to pray for well is he aware that a frowning world breeds criminals And he prays but while he prays thd great iron door of the little instances almost daily presented to us by the ac tors themselves in Lifes great drama Ihave not resided in Springfield long enough to see any man contribute all his earthly goods toward twentyfive years of my life wore spent There I saw this horrible tragedy enacted more than one time by tragedians vho acted true to life but unto death Jorrible in the ex treme revolting I heseen boys grow to debauched manhoalr become vaga bonds I have seen their old homesteads and their fertile acres go to pay debts contracted in debauchrxI have seen grayheaded fathers p rayheaded moth era go to their graves sorrowstricken I have seen sons an daughters and wives devote a good part of their lives to prevent the father nd husband from I t giving the old homestead to beautify the floor of the to a felons cell I have seen onetime prosperous citizens made subjects of charity and I have seen bright intellects destroyed I have seen all of these things because men gave their gold to beautify The Sun would n ake a fight for local option And rig it here permit the statement that The Sun intends to make an honorabl fight for local option against the saloon in Washington county not against ination This course will be of benefit notonly to those who are contemplating the examinations but also to any one who wishes a review The course will be largely lectures The normal class in school at cents apiece They will prehaps walk through J and they have decided to strike for compli mentry tickets There will be nothing for the Harrodsburg people to do but grant it for we are convinced that the tourn ment would be a failure ifour three professors were absent Examinations will riot be held this weekas announced last week but will next Monday and Tuesday All who get a class grade of oyer eightyfive per sent will be exempted Many of the students are studying with this ex emption in mind as it will practically cut off a week of school for them Our geography class has read with interest of the debate in which a negro was shot last Week as to whether San Francisco was situated in Chicago or in Maine Had our class been along it might have been able to arbitrate the rnattpr It has had sev rah questions to settle and some inyo ving quite as much geographic knowl ge as this They have oven discusse such deeply scientific questions as hether they- c uld tell the north pole ii they should see it Sam Wells claims that they could tell it by its resemblance to the s uth pole The general pinion how ever and one that has not been dis proven by ocular evidence is that the pole is native home Such a pilgrimage with such devotion as it will have has seldom ever been seen Worlds Fairs have been held where vast throngs come to see the worlds wonders Reunions have come bringing together former comrades of the great four years war but never before have the natives ot one state scattered far apart turned with one impulse to revisit their former hrfmes Never did so many people at one time come home as will meet in Louisville next month Coming Home What a wealth of meaning those two words carry with them God pity the man who never got a welcome home The picture of the knight starting out on his adven tures is truly inspiring but when covered with honor he returns to the bosom of his proud mother when he comes home we have the grander scene Oh the distant desert at night his dreams have been all of that home Mid the glamour of foreign ourts he has ever kept his native home before his gaze At length the way seems long glories seem empty he draws his rein toVards home He counts the hours and urges on his horse that he may get there the sooner At length the home of his boyhood looms up before him What to him wer glories and honors beside the memories he cherished of that home For forty or fifty years Kentucky has been sending forth her young knights Many of them have attained HORROR Of the California Earthquake As Seen By a Former Washington County Lady The following letter written a few hours after the California earthquake was received by Mr Geo Qocanougher Santa Rosa Cal April 20 Dear Brothers Fathers and All My God how can I write this letter We are all safe but so dazed we know not how to realize the awfulness of the scene of desolation and devastation I had expected to write to youof Easter joys but its from 5a house of weeping and distressing scenes instead The shockof earthquake came at 510 Wednesday the 18th such a merciful hour justlight and yet before people had gone to business houses The shock lasted one minute but it seemed an hour and the roar was so awful a voice could scarce be h ard The Lord cer tainly was good tbufinone of us hurt and our hquse left standing and only Ours and one other chimney in all the North part of town and maybe allover town We live next door to the hospital so my work has been at home i have seen but little except crushed bleeding and dying people We gathered all the beds and bcddinrfor the hospital as soon as we to carry jn twenty crushed people there myself Hospitals are opened in every building considered safe We had one of the most beautiful cities in the world but almost in an in stant it was destroyed The whole business street is an utter loss courthouse postoffice everything except a bakery fell into the street not a drug store grocery or business house ofany kind left Our new fourstory brick hotel two new threestory bricks the new stone Masonic Temple and stone library were totally destroyed in fact there was not qne stone left standing on another 1n townl Fire broke out in several places and as we had no water most everything burned The drug stores and lodging houses burned first and oh so many burned to death Here I stopped to get the stretcher ready to carry Sin a Chinaman who is mashed to pieces CIIThere are two parties here for funer Church isthemorgue I saw positions of glory and honor Others have humsbier of their native state that nothing can rob them of Nd state in the union retains theaffection of its children awav from home so much as does Kentucky What a time these wilt be when this multitude from all directions begin that great hqmecoming All of them will meet in Louisville and there will do honor to their state They will view the scenes of their old metropolis But with all this it will not be a full welcome unless they revisit their old home in Kentucky Let ug have a homecoming in Spring field A great time all the old citizens of the townwill have when they come together When one revisits the town now after several years absence what a welcome does he get One of our old residents who returned for a short visit last fall said he had never elsewhere felt the Springfield Handshake When allof them get back and talk over old days when things were bet ter than they are now and lose them selves in the land of youth Springfield will truly be gay Let us by all means havehomecomi g If held immediately after the main affair in
