Sunday Night Was Largely AttendedJudge Op nsMeetingA dregs By Eld Walden and Talks By Other Pastors of the Town The court room was crowded to its fullest capacity on last Sunday night hear discussions of the temperance question by Eld Walden of the Chris tan church grid Revs Lyons of the Methodist Latierof the Presbytef Iian and- churches Wililaftis of the Baptist At lie appointed hour fo the meeting to begin there was hardly standing space left in the large room andthe audience manifested much int figLateJudge I H Thurman was asked t call the meeting to order He did so ndhq did it in a manner that immense ly pleased his hearers Judge Thur mandidnot rflince words he spoke em phatically and in no uncertain terms He denied that local option would kill Springfield He said he had as much interest in tho welfare of Springfield as any citizen living in the town that he had property here that nearly all of his interests were iiri Springfield but with all of that ho lvhswil1ng to risk local option B forcible utterance Z livered by Judge Thurman was thisCC My friends if I had one vote to cast every day of my life for or against the whisky business and should some time cast just one vote for the sale of whisky I would feel that I ha proven untrue to tile teachings of my mother After Judge Thurmjms brief address the audience led by Rev Lyons sang America This was Poll w d by prayer 1 by Rev Williams then an interesting short address by Rev Lyons Rev Lyons was followed by Rev Latimer whose subject was Temperance from a Scriptual Standpoint Mr Latimei made some strong points and pleilse- his hearers He took most of his arguments against whisky from the Bibl Bid Walden of the Christian church who was the speaker of the evtrnijng next took the floor His subject was The Saloon as Business Proposition Eld Walden is a forciblp speaker and his address upon this occasion was un prrpared to get the r out ofhis sub- Ject and those who heard him will tes tify that his arguments were unans werable Mr Walden resides in La raster a local option town He told briefly of the prosperity which has come to Lancaster since whisky was voted out The population had increas wonderfully dry goods and grocery stores had multiplied throe times and more each doing a larger business than whi81kydebt and taxes are low It has an e anent water and light system and t iitiz ns of from immediate benefactions of any great magnitude and so she adds a codicil to her volum inous will and nearly always revises her general scheme of charity at the same time Upon a certain day I had an appoint went to call upon Mrs Culver at 3 In the afternoon and 1 looked forward to the usual agreeable interview When I entered her house I was aware of music very good music as I am compelled to admit Some out was playing upon the piano In the smaller drawing room upon my right I guessed at once that the performer must be a young Dane named Nils Kronold whose genius had recently been brought to Mrs Culvers attention The butler informed Mrs Culver of my presence and she came to the reception room where we exchanged a few words I learned that she had en countered Mr Kronold in one of the to the sweet strains that were wafted across to us The reason was twofold first I preferred the voice of my hostess to any other music and second I had ob served something which though it had no especial significance at the moment excited my curiosity and tended to deflect my attention Behind Mrs Culver there was a mirror and it gave me a view of the part of the hall and of the entrance of the room where Mr Kro fold was A heavy curtain was hung across that door I saw the butler a lean dark anxious man whose name tit Derby draw the curtain aside and eater I saw him presently emerge and
