any Sucha thing has never hap- ened in the Fourth District before John Young Brown was nominated on account of a dead lock between other candidates Proctor Knott was nominated the same way for the first term Tom Robertson Was nominated in a convention which lasted nearly a week udge Montgomery won out in a hard primary and Dave Smith was nominated for his first term after the convention had been dead locked for more than a week Johnsons luck is remarkable Had Dave Smith withdrawn from the race a week before Johnson announced there would have been a field full of candi dates and a convention instead of a pri mary ordered In this event it would have been anybodys race As it was Smith was for a primary and his friends on theCommittee were for what he wanted Johnson also wanted a primary and his friends on the com mittee were for a primary Incons- equence when Smith withdrew the very day the Committee riiet a primary was ordered On the surface it looks like Johnson knew that Smith was going to withdraw but such was not the case and he only knew it a few hours before it was publicly announced in the papers It was a combinatio of cir cumstances such as lwe have never known to have occurred in politics be fore and can probably be called John sons luck Dave Shitths first nomination turned also on a very small thing The con vention was held in Elizabethtown and lasted for more than a week There were three candidates smith Murray and Sweeney They each had about the same number of instructed votes It was apparent that Murray preferred Smith over Sweeney and that Smith itstook a week for Sweeneys friends to find out this and nobody knew certainly where Sweeneys strength would go if Smitheor most of it as the final ballot showed Smiths friends had about given tip SEditor Sun The road commissioner is now ready to let the public roads out to contractors for the Year and I would like to suggest that each farmer whose farm joins the roadsto have the privilege to work the said road as far as his farm extends along it I have observed that there are a num ber of men that get the contracts for working the roads every year Others that are interested in good roads are denied the privilege J6 better their con dition The men whose farms lie along the roads usually nave plenty of rock that they would Put on the road if they d01witment of the road that passes his own door or farm The contractor is denied the right to haul the rock off of other mens farms consequently theyare compelled to haul the metal for a long distancesome times two or three miles This is bound1 to be expensive It is not the contractor that suffers by this mode of work but it is the road It fails to reo ceive itsproper amount of wgrkand the result is that a patch of rock here and there are covered double deep with dirt to make a half show to the public It is a shame to see money expended as it is upon some roads and as long is a fewcontractors are allowed the exclusive privilege of announce HON BEN JOHNSON- of Nelson county asa candidate for Congress in the Fourth Congressional district subject to the action of the Democratic Primary Saturday June 2 1906 BEN JOHNSONI Hon Ben Johnson ot Bards town who will be elected to Congress from the Fourth dis trictnext November has a great I many pretty characteristics of which the people of the district know little He himself places in the background many of his best traitstraits which most of us very much desire that other people see in us indeed he draws a curtain around his stars MrI Johnson dislikes to parade before the public his gifts to charity his lifts to friends and because o this peculiarityif you would call it a peculiar tyfa pretty part of his life is hidden by his own hand He will nbt permit tha many of his most generous acts be madep ublio hq does not believe in the blowing of trumpets and the beating f gongs ove his own good deed Verily his e one from among the few who does not want his name shouted from the housetops If he knew what I am about t say what I am going put r upon paper he would say Burn it up I hveseen him tried along this line and he said Burr it up But just at this time th countyIthhave a right tp know more6f th man who is to represent irthe National Congress some thin pf his dispositionof the private life of him for whom they are to vote nex t November For this reason I will tell 4ffew thingsa lew things just happened to learn Mr Ben Johnson is charitable not merely to that small degree in whichpennypurses are handed out but to that degree which is s truly a HELP to the man or woman or child Nohbody has ever yet known Ben Johnson to turn a deaf ear to the pleadings of the needy I have known him tP send his check each week to unfortunate families in whose homes illness had placed a heavy hand He has bought shoes for the little gals boots for the little boys a suit of clothes for some unfortunate mari dress for some poor woman an food and fuel andmedicine thats his sort of religion and its a Godly one Ve have in Springfield just now a man who was stricken with illness in Bardstown a few years ago Although Mr Johnson barely knew ihis man he sent to his family each week a loan ofio That man told me this story a fesi days ago and said to me would vote for Ben Johnson against my own brother This is only one of many instances in which Mr Johnson benevolence has won forihim the undying es teem of his unfortunate fellowman Indeed Bn Johnson is warmhearted but he doesnt go into rslandwails He is generous He would pillow the t ead of a fallen enemy on the moss brink ofa running brookand t uch his lips with water One jf the most repulsive things in all the world to him is to see the ictor strike at the vanquished or the strong fall upon the wak He is a fair andsquare d jaler with his feIj lows He m kes money but does not make it by gouging or crushing dr doubledealing He has made much moneywhat- you might call big moneyby seeing thing that other people didnt see Ben Johnson is thor oughly hone tand if there is anybody in all the world who dispise5 dishonesty in aUof its varied forms it is hei WIliLISBURG If singns are true spring to u comparatively new aliment in flat foot or breaking down of ute arch of the instep This trouble is supposed to be caused by so much going up and down stands to elevated trains and Jumping off curs The small bones whIch unite to form the arch of the loot sink downward slowly or sudden ly as the case may be The bones of the Instep are many and when from excessive mounting of stairs stepping down from moving cars or other strains these bones lose f their cohesive power and sink down they bring the arch udder Instead of on the top of the foot The muscles of the loot have no power to lift these small bones into their place and sink with them The pain Is excruciating even for some time before the breakdown and Is nearly always mistaken for rheumatism About the best remedy for this too common trouble is to avoid It by step ping squarely on the foot and above all by having the shoes made with a de tided curve under the Instep and bay Jug this part of the shoe made very strong and solid This
