NightLargeI Crowd Out The entc rtainment given at the opera house our home boys and girls last Friday night was a genuine success form start to finish They acquitted themsebves gloriously and the oldest theatre gOers are ready to admit that the performance was one of the best ever given here The Church Across The Way a Pastorial play in four acts completed the evenings entertainment The play was as good as a sermon and despite the very inclement weather which the month of March alone can produce it was witnessed by a large crowd of people from this townand vi cinity The play was s0 well presented that it would have ben a difficult mat ter to have persuaded strangers in the town that they were not witnessing a play given by a real traveling mpilny Miss Lydia McElroy was excellent in the leading part although a long and difficult one handled it with rare skill andexcelled in many ways others who have appeared here in similar parts Her acting and appearance were admir able throughout The Village Gossip as played by Miss Catherine RusSelL was a genuine treat and her every appearance was the signal for an outburst of approval from the large audience present Miss Russell seemed perfectly at east and the costumes worn by her simply im mense Miss Sue Ray Lebanon madea very pleasing appearance and sang and act ed her way into the good graceS of all While her part was not a long one she played it exceedinglyWell Charles Greene appeared in the role of a detective and his part was a hard one but he played it in fine style Charley looked like a real actor and acted like one and delighted his many friends present byhis clever work Will Waters was the doctor and h made a fine one He acted well and made a handsome appearance jXynn Bush was the escaped convict andohn Roberts the country sheriff BbtK of these young gentlemen played their parts in a highly satisfactory manner Frank Noe as Aunt Biny the colored servant brought down the house He was irresistibly funny and his makeup was a revelation Edmond Barrett who directed th play appeared as the minister and his acting was enjoyed The musical numbers between th acts were features The Misses Hay don and Johnson appeared in musical selections Both possess rich voices o rare quality and delighted all who wer fortunate to hear them Messrs Noe and Watert in their specialty convul sed the audience with laughter Played Several Years AgoU9W Some of Congressman Have Won Out l III t t lIz hetiltown News r Ben Johnson running for the first tme for Congress has a clear track without opposition and is not likely to any Sucha thing has never hap- ened in the Fourth District before John Young Brown was nominated on account of a dead lock between other candidates Proctor Knott was nominated the same way for the first term Tom Robertson Was nominated in a convention which lasted nearly a week udge Montgomery won out in a hard primary and Dave Smith was nominated for his first term after the convention had been dead locked for more than a week Johnsons luck is remarkable Had Dave Smith withdrawn from the race a week before Johnson announced there would have been a field full of candi dates and a convention instead of a pri mary ordered In this event it would have been anybodys race As it was Smith was for a primary and his friends on theCommittee were for what he wanted Johnson also wanted a primary and his friends on the com mittee were for a primary Incons- equence when Smith withdrew the very day the Committee riiet a primary was ordered On the surface it looks like Johnson knew that Smith was going to withdraw but such was not the case and he only knew it a few hours before it was publicly announced in the papers It was a combinatio of cir cumstances such as lwe have never known to have occurred in politics be fore and can probably be called John sons luck Dave Shitths first nomination turned also on a very small thing The con vention was held in Elizabethtown and lasted for more than a week There were three candidates smith Murray and Sweeney They each had about the same number of instructed votes It was apparent that Murray preferred Smith over Sweeney and that Smith itstook a week for Sweeneys friends to find out this and nobody knew certainly where Sweeneys strength would go if Smitheor most of it as the final ballot showed Smiths friends had about given tip oria certain ballot practically aItof his vote went to Murray and he was announcedwA recapitulation was called for which showed the vote recorded as cast The secretarys figures were given to the w4s not allowed to speak to the convention Bryan had been nominated tor President and the troubled waters were smoothed over and Smith wont the election easily But he got his first nomination by a shave and awful close one Tom Robertsonj won his first nbm iriation dead locked convention at tQw l There were five other candidates McKay of Nelson Cunningham cf Washington Wal ker of Ohio Hobbs of Bul itt and Butler of Meade i bi Kay had the most votes to start witih There were 128 ballots before there was a change On the 129th ballot Butler was withdrawn and his five votes from Meade went to McKay Then Hobbs was withdrawn and his four votes were divided be tween the remaining four candidates Following this a resolution was passed to drop the candidate having the few est number of votes McKay had enough votes to drop anyone of his op CUlninghamthe nomination of Robertson McKay RObertjsonout of county was instructed second for Robinson and he also got the largest part of Washing ton I took still another turn to nom inate Robertson Walker would be the next man dropped and he could nomi nate either Robertson or McKay GenSamWalker and cast the vote of the county for Robertson This ended the fight and Robertson w nominated but he won out by good luck and was twice in th Jllme hole J Montgomery beatj Robertson after he had served two terms in the most strenuous primary ever held SEditor Sun The road commissioner is now ready to let the public roads out to contractors for the Year and I would like to suggest that each farmer whose farm joins the roadsto have the privilege to work the said road as far as his farm extends along it I have observed that there are a num ber of men that get the contracts for working the roads every year Others that are interested in good roads are denied the privilege J6 better their con dition The men whose farms lie along the roads usually nave plenty of rock that they would Put on the road if they d01witment of the road that passes his own door or farm The contractor is denied the right to haul the rock off of other mens farms consequently theyare compelled to haul the metal for a long distancesome times two or three miles This is bound1 to be expensive It is not the contractor that suffers by this mode of work but it is the road It fails to reo ceive itsproper amount of wgrkand the result is that a patch of rock here and there are covered double deep with dirt to make a half show to the public It is a shame to see money expended as it is upon some roads and as long is a fewcontractors are allowed the exclusive privilege of
