at Willis burg last Thursday night at 9 oclock otAlood poisoning Mr Mcllvoy had been ill for about ten days and his death was not unexpected About two weeks ago while pulling some weeds in his yard his hand was scratched by a briar At the time of course little attention was paid to such a slight wound but in a few days erysipelas pet in followed by a severe case of bloodpoisoning from whichall realized he could not recover Mr McIlvoy was one of Washinfiton countys most highly respected citizens and there are hundreds of people in the county who are grieved over his death The deceased was a charitable man kind and affectionate and was honored by a host of friends Mr McIlvoy leaves a devoted wife and seven children to mourn his death to whom condolence is extended Funeral services were a Former Washington County Man In Oakland Cal News has just been received here of the brutal murder of Mr B G Shirley at his home in Oakland Cal on the night of October 7 Tjie murder is yet a mystery though it is said every effort is being made to apprehend the guilty party On the morning of the8th the unfortunate man was found near the entrance of a hotel his head being crushed in several places Mr Shirley waS born and reared at Willisburg this county and at one I time was a stock trader About twenty years ago he left here and the greater part of this time has been spent in California For awhile he was connected with a private detective bureau in San Francisco It is thought probably his death is due to a grudge held against him by some crook whom he had caused to be arrested The Joy was wounded in the head and the right leg The trouble was cauaed by Frank Hammel whohad been drink ing and when taken to task by the old man knocked him down The elder Hammelsecured a revolver and injuries received in a manner unknown On Thursday night last he was in thet Last Chance Saloon on Depot street and complained of his leg hurting him TVnin the place closed he went out and 4next morning when bbe CareYcame down to open the saloon he found Mr Woods standing holding to a buggy on the street to which there was no horse hitched He was shivering and ap deathtHe asked for a drink of water which washven him He was taken mid Dr Forsythe summoned homeI was found that his thigh was crushed and shattered though were no external bruises to indicate the fracture which could only be discovered by manipulation Drs Forsythe Wash l Carrol Price and Witherspoon a postmortem examination and besideI the hip fracture found that his bladder was badly ruptured The physicians say that they do not see how he could have received such injuries unless from being kicked Some say he might have climbed into the buggy and fallen out of it but such injuries could not have been received in that Enterprise Some time ago William Whitfield a pauper idiot who is receiving an allowance from the State on account of his condition applied to County Clerk Carter for a license to marry Mrs Mary Nalley Mr Carter informed Whitfield that he could not issue a license to him as it would be contrary to the law Yesterday Whitfield and MrsTSfalley appeared before Judge Cooper and presenting a license from the clerks office of Washington county said that they wished to be married Judge Cooper however refused to perform the ceremony stating that he could not do so until Whitfield had been re stored to citizenship by an order of circuit court Both Whiffield and Mrs Nalley are residents of the western part of the county They were accompanied yes terday by two men named Knopp and Martin from Taylor county- It is understood that the couple ap- Plied to the clerk of the Ta tor county court for a license and were refused and then made the trip to Springfield whore they succeeded in slipping up on Milling Co was blown open Monday night and 2125 taken from the vault thereof The robber effected an entrance into the mill by breaking a window Both doors of the safe were blown off and the cracksman made his escape from the town The Nolin Milling Co offered a reward of 25 for the apprehension of the robber Within the safe there was a bottle of exIplosionwithdrew the money from the safe his handcame in contact with the ink The ink on his hand led to his Constable Bob Francis of Upton andIChurchill Patterson in the the Sonora Mill discovered a man a box car at Upton on the following morning and effected his arrest He gave his name as George Brown The telltale ink was found on Browns hand and on the money found in his possession which amounted to 2115 he having spent ten cents for Republican nomi nee for County Judge and Mr C R Filiatreau the Republican nominee for Sheriff announcing their withdrawal from the contest and we very much hoped thatI with the withdrawal of these two gentlemen who were the only Republican nominees that there would be no contest in this coun ty at the November election Mr J R Wharton has been nom inated by the Republicans for the office of Sheriff and a race is now inefitable We do not believe however that the people of Washington Bounty are ready or willing to make a change in this particular office The adminis tration of public affairs in Wash ington county for the last eight years is beyond criticism and certainly unexcelled in any county in the State What more then can any citizens expect ask or demand In ourcomments ofa few weeks ago upon Washington Countys Democratic administra tion we never spoke of any of its officials individually but have always referred to the work accom pushed by them collectively yet it must be borne in mind that the officer of Sheriff has played an important part in bringing about the magnificent financial showing that Washington county now has In December 1898 H B Powell one of the candidates for Deputy Sheriff was then the Sheriff of Washington county Ed Masters candidate for Deputy Sheriff was then a Deputy Sheriff for Washington county and J S Osbourne the present Democratic nominee for Sheriff was also a Deputy Sheriff for Washington county It was at this time and it was these gentlemen with the assist ance of our present Sheriffwho was then Deputy for the first time in our countys history made a full settlement with both county and State on December 1St of the year in which the taxes were collected and on the 1st of December of each succeeding year up to the present time our Sheriffs and deputies have made the same prompt settlement with the County Treasurer This prompt settlement and payment of the countys funds has made it possi bee for the county to meet its obligations promptly and to put its business anon a cash basis and when ve say that the office of Sheriff of Washington county for the last eight years has been bet ter conducted for the interest of wastBefore it is certainly as a compliment as can be paid to any county official when we consider Washington county has in the east had among it office holders many of the best Sheriffs in the Stdte against whom no criticism has ever been passed POLITICAL DARDS Over in LaRue county the Republicans have nominated can didates for County Court Clerk and Jailer and their cards which appeared in the last issue of The LaRue County Herald are of suchan interesting nature that we print them below 1 desire to announce to the public that I am a candidate for the office of County Clerk and that my name a cent to every package delivered there There was some doubt whether the Railroad Commission had power over express companies but Chairman McChorddecided that it had and on being appealed to the Commission di rected the company to remove the extra charge It refused to do so1rat when the matter was about to come before the grand jury and many indict ments seemed probable the company took water and decided to remove the extra charge And thus has another grinding monopoly been brought to- ay This is only one of many hun dreds of instances in which Mr Mc Chord has come to the rescue of the people He wont stand rightHeand other large corporations as some people have said he has never at any time treated them unjustly or unfairly but he has always demanded that they must not treat the people unjustly or unfairly And thats the sort of a man Kentucky needs at the helm of the ship of Statea man who will compel the corporations to treat the people right andwho will compell the people to treat the corporation right A FAIR QUESTION If you were to go to a member of the Republican of Washington county and skhimI to cast his vote for Sydney Os bourne for Sheriff he would doubt less imform you that he was pres ent when Mr Wharton was nom inated and participated in the meeting and for that reason if for no other he felt honorably bound to support Mr Wharton He would also doubtless feel a little hard toward you for asking him to violate his pledge He would have a right to feel bar d toward you because it is no mall matter to ask a man to violate a promise But you have just as
