Republican nomi nee for County Judge and Mr C R Filiatreau the Republican nominee for Sheriff announcing their withdrawal from the contest and we very much hoped thatI with the withdrawal of these two gentlemen who were the only Republican nominees that there would be no contest in this coun ty at the November election Mr J R Wharton has been nom inated by the Republicans for the office of Sheriff and a race is now inefitable We do not believe however that the people of Washington Bounty are ready or willing to make a change in this particular office The adminis tration of public affairs in Wash ington county for the last eight years is beyond criticism and certainly unexcelled in any county in the State What more then can any citizens expect ask or demand In ourcomments ofa few weeks ago upon Washington Countys Democratic administra tion we never spoke of any of its officials individually but have always referred to the work accom pushed by them collectively yet it must be borne in mind that the officer of Sheriff has played an important part in bringing about the magnificent financial showing that Washington county now has In December 1898 H B Powell one of the candidates for Deputy Sheriff was then the Sheriff of Washington county Ed Masters candidate for Deputy Sheriff was then a Deputy Sheriff for Washington county and J S Osbourne the present Democratic nominee for Sheriff was also a Deputy Sheriff for Washington county It was at this time and it was these gentlemen with the assist ance of our present Sheriffwho was then Deputy for the first time in our countys history made a full settlement with both county and State on December 1St of the year in which the taxes were collected and on the 1st of December of each succeeding year up to the present time our Sheriffs and deputies have made the same prompt settlement with the County Treasurer This prompt settlement and payment of the countys funds has made it possi bee for the county to meet its obligations promptly and to put its business anon a cash basis and when ve say that the office of Sheriff of Washington county for the last eight years has been bet ter conducted for the interest of wastBefore it is certainly as a compliment as can be paid to any county official when we consider Washington county has in the east had among it office holders many of the best Sheriffs in the Stdte against whom no criticism has ever been passed POLITICAL DARDS Over in LaRue county the Republicans have nominated can didates for County Court Clerk and Jailer and their cards which appeared in the last issue of The LaRue County Herald are of suchan interesting nature that we print them below 1 desire to announce to the public that I am a candidate for the office of County Clerk and that my name will appear as the nominee of the Repub lican party and will be found on the respectfullyregardless of political affiliations If elected I shall give to the people the best and most respectful service that is in my power DJTHURMIINJr I am a candidate for Jailer of La Rue county and am the nominee of the Republican party my name to app pear on the ballot under the device of the log cabin I shall greatly appreciate the support of all voters of the county of any political faith and I be elected to office I shall give to the discharge of the duties thereof the best ability that Ipossess JOSHUA REDMON Observe that Mr Thurman announces that My name will ap- Pear as the nominee of the Re publican party and will be found on the ballot under the log cabin I respectfully solicit the support of my friends regardless ot political affiliations etcetc It will also be noticed that Mr Redmon in his card announces that his name will appear under the device of the log cabin He like Mr Thurman says that he will appreciate the support of voters ofall political faith If these two candidates wanted the support of all vpters of all politi cal parties why didnt they get themselves under an independents dvicesay the picture of a hog Then if they should be lucky enough to secure a sufficient number of Democratic votes to win they would not place these Democratic jyoters in the light of helping to elect a straight Republican and the voters in after years when they were accused of voting the Re publican ticket could tell their friends that they did rip such thing that they once voted the independent ticket Come out from under the eves of the log cabin gentlemen and then possibly you may be able to pre suade a limited few of your best Democratic friends to vote for you A newspaper tells a story of a father who shot his son because the son slapped his mother Its a terrible thing fora father to shoot a son its a terrible thing for a son to slap his mother The boy who can prove ungrat ful to his truest friend his most devout lover and worshiper his mother is the meanest scoun drel that God Almighty ever per mitted to feast upon his sunshine and air He ought to be shot but his daddy ought not to do the shooting I BUY jv + C C McCHORD The following is from the Shel byvile News The worst monopoly doing business- in Kentucky is the express compan- yIt charges what it pleases serves when it pleases and does as it gener ally The City Council of Shelbyville imposed a license on it in common with other concerns doing business there and the company retaliated by adding a cent to every package delivered there There was some doubt whether the Railroad Commission had power over express companies but Chairman McChorddecided that it had and on being appealed to the Commission di rected the company to remove the extra charge It refused to do so1rat when the matter was about to come before the grand jury and many indict ments seemed probable the company took water and decided to remove the extra charge And thus has another grinding monopoly been brought to- ay This is only one of many hun dreds of instances in which Mr Mc Chord has come to the rescue of the people He wont stand rightHeand other large corporations as some people have said he has never at any time treated them unjustly or unfairly but he has always demanded that they must not treat the people unjustly or unfairly And thats the sort of a man Kentucky needs at the helm of the ship of Statea man who will compel the corporations to treat the people right andwho will compell the people to treat the corporation right A FAIR QUESTION If you were to go to a member of the Republican of Washington county and skhimI to cast his vote for Sydney Os bourne for Sheriff he would doubt less imform you that he was pres ent when Mr Wharton was nom inated and participated in the meeting and for that reason if for no other he felt honorably bound to support Mr Wharton He would also doubtless feel a little hard toward you for asking him to violate his pledge He would have a right to feel bar d toward you because it is no mall matter to ask a man to violate a promise But you have just as much right to aska member of the Republican committee to voter r Sydney Osbourne as a Repub lican has to ask Democrats who participated in the recent primary to vote the Republican ticket The Republicans haveall of the best offices at the disposal f the National Government Indeed with the exception of a very small sprinkling they have allof them We all admit tha they are entitled to them They have the postoffices = the still house places the clerkships and hundreds of other fat jobs D you as a Democrat propose say by your vote that you toI them to have the county offices in Democratic counties President Roosevelt has dealt a deathblow to civil service And whats the difference Let it wriggle awhile and die WWW i A Large Consumer Of oalti t is often troubled by the frequency with plbce of string about your thumb thus Let one end of itJA drop between the thumb und forefliiger of your left hand then wind the other part which you retain in your right hand two or three times round your thumb next make a little loop Bi with the same end which hold between your finger and thumb Now let go the end C and take hold of the end A which you must hum left about six or eight inches long ABBAXGEMENT OF THE STRING and you may make a spectator fancy you pass it through the loop and take hold of it again when so pasied through in the twinkling of an eye To increase the surprise you may make the loop as small as possible This apparent piece of manual dexteri ty Is performed by passing that end of the string marked A as quickly as pos sible around the top of the thumb so as to come between the forefinger and loortnndend through It much to the wonderment of the audience at the seeming Impossibility of such a thing FORCE OF HABIT Grandpa Skoea and a Little Sermon For GirlH nod Boy
