aspiraritfor literary fame insulted the social leaders of the city invited to a reception given in her honor by Mrs Sam Johnstone has the fashionable set here been so dismayed as it is today because several of its members have been refused admittance to the residence of United States Sen ator W A Clark by the Senators young wife In company with her hus band she returns to Butte several times- a year The other day three of the most societyPat pay their respects to Mrs Clark A butler took their cards and while they waited the women say they heard a gentle familiar voice instructing the servant to convey to the callers the information that Mrs Clark was not at home The butler obeyed orders and the three leaders from the west side flounced down the steps with feelings too turbulent for words 1They hastened to pour forth thfeir indignation to the other members of the smart set The other members were sympathetic How rude of Mrs Clark The idea were some of the comments No indejed they would not calU But they did The fact that three of their fellows had been snubbed did not deter others from having a try at making their way into the presence of the wife of Montanas senior senator Some of themin every instance- a those who had known Mrs Clark during her girlhood when she lived in poverty with her parents herewere admitted and welcomed cordially Then it leaked out that Mrs Clark preferred the friends of the old days to those who seek to pay her homage now that she is wealthy but who failed to recog nize her or any member of her family at the time when she was Miss La Chappelle and known only as the daughter of a poor French physician familyS exclucame sive set in Butte has suffered a division from which it is not likely to re cover in months A dozen or so of stately dames who have been refused admittance to the Clark house and their immediate friends who have never known Mrs Clark are loud in their denunciation of her action in re pulsing their advances Wheat Yield Owensboro Messenger Wheat harvest iion at full swing in Daviess county arid the bulk of the crop will be in theshock in a week The indications are that the yield will be much better than was expected a few weeks ago Judging from the number of binders sold this must be the largest wheat crop ever harvested in Daviess county The same is true with regard to the hay crop The T J Turley Company has sold this season over 300 mowers and binders in Daviess county by far the largest sales ever made in Owensboro in a single season The supply on hand was exhausted and to all appearances the demand is as strong as ever Binders were yes terday ordered shipped by express so urgent was the demand for them This is the first time in the history of Owens boro that heavy articlessuch as bind erShave been ordered by express The machines received last night in thatway weighed over 1000 pounds The dealers say that the short crop of the past two seasons accounts for the unusual demand for binders this year With light crops the farmers have not felt justi fied in making any outlay in machinery The result has been that a large per cent di the binders and mowers have gone to pieces so that they can not be operated and have to be replaced by new onesl Another unusual thing about the binder trade this season is that there is a strong demand for binders with eightfoot blades So far as the local dealers know there was not one of these heavy machines in the county prior to the opening of the present sea son In the past few days several operators of large farms have bought these machines Five horses are required to pull one of them Wheat has ripened very rapidly in the past few lays and fOllirharvesting pears to be quite good but it will not be ready to cut for two weeks and female spirit and had returned there with a great force swearing to capture her or perish Tbe spirits the Malay said had dwelt upon the island for many years His father and grandfather knew the place and feared at Taung SAlk would never be seen again This queer yarn was the first Indica tion they received of the of any persons who might wl1creuboutsI shipwrecked Europeans survivors from the the tiny dot lay In the vessels north ward track so a course was set to ar rive off the island soon after dawn Events on shore us seen by the offi cer on watch tbld their owe tale Wherever Dyaks are fighting there is mischief on foot so the Orient took a hand in the proceedings But Sir Arthur Deane after an agonized scrutiny of the weird persons escorted by the sailors lookingI waters edge sadly neither oftbese could be the daughter whom he sought He bowed his bead In humble resignation and he thought he was the victim of a cruel hallucination when Iris tremulous accents reached his ears Father father Dont you know meHe stood up amazed and trembling Yes father dear it Is I your own little girl given back to you They had some difficulty to kip him In the boat and the man pulling stroke smashed a stout oar with the next wronch And so they met at last and the sailors left them alone to crowd round Anstrutber and ply him with a hundred questions Although he fell In with their humor aqd gradually pieced to gether the stirring story which was supplemented each Instant by tbe ar rival of disconsolate Dy iks and the comments of the men who returned from cute and beach his soul was filled with the sight of Iris and her father and the happy inconsequent demands with whicheach sought to ascertain and relieve the extent of the others anxiety Then Iriscalled to him Robert 1 want you The use of hrs Christian name creat ed something akin to a sensation Sir Arthur Deane was startled even in his Immeasurable delight at finding his child uninjured the picture of rude health and happiness Anstruther advanced This Is my father she cried shrill with Joy And father darling this 4 JAnd so then met at last la Captain Uobcrt Anstruther to whom Mono under Gods will I owe my life many many times since the moment the Sirdar was lost It was no time for questioning Sir Arthur Deuue took off his hut and held out his hand Captain Anstruther he said as I owe you my daughters life I owe you that which L can never repay And I owe you my own life too for I could not have survived the knowledge that she was dead Robert took the proffered hand 1 think Sir Arthur that of the two I am the more deeply Indebted There are some privileges whose value can not be measured and among them the privilege of restoring your daughter to your arras takes the highest place Then he turned to Iris I think he said that your father should take you on board the Orient Iris There you gray perltops find some suitable clothing eat something and recover from the exciting events of the morning Afterward ydb must brio Sir Arthur ashore again and wo t will guide him overothe Island I am sure you will find much to tell him meanwhileThe could riot fail to note the manner In which these two ad dressed each other the fearless love which leaped from eye to eye the calm acceptance of a relationship not to be questioned or gainsaid Robert and Iris without spoken word on the sub ject had tacitly agreed to avoid the slightest semblance of subterfuge as unworthy alike of their achievements and their love Your suggestion is admirable cried Sir Arthur The ships stores may provide Iris with sornq sort of rigout and an old friend of hers is on board at this moment little expecting her presence Lord Ventnor has accompanied me In my search He will of course flushed a deep bronze but Iris broke In Father why did he come with you Sir Arthur driven into this sudden squall of explanation became digni fied Well you see my dear under the circumstances he felt an arixlpty almost commensurate with my own But why why Iris was quite calm With Robert near she was courageous Even the perturbed baronet experienced a new sensation as his troubled glance fell before her searching eyes His daughter had left him a Joybus heedless girl He found her a woman strong self reliant purposeful Yet he kept on choosing the most straightforward means as the only honorable way of clearing a course so beset with unsus pected obstacles It Is only reasonable Iris that your affianced husband should suffer an agony of apprehension on your account and dp all that was possible to effect your rescue MyTaffiancedhusban d2 Wei my dear girl perhaps that Is hardly the correct phrase from your point of view Yet you cannot taU to remember that Lord Ventnor Father dear said Iris solemnly but In a voice free ifrom all uncertainty my affianced husband stands here We plighted our troth at the very gate of death It was ratified In the presence of God and has been blessed by him I have made no compact with Lord Ventnor He Is a base and un worthy man Did you but know the truth concerning him you would not mention his nameln the same breath with mine Would be Robert Be acfdsed by me Sir Arthur and you too Iris he said This Is no hour for explanations Leave me to deal with Lord Ventnor I am content to trust the ultimate verdict to you Sir Arthur You will learn in due course all that has happened Go on board Iris Moot Lord Ventnor as you would meet nay other friend You will not marry him I know I can trust you I nm very much obliged to you murmured the baronet who notwith standinghlsworry was far too experi enced man of the world not to ac knowledge the good sense of this advice no matter how rufilanly might be the guise of the strange person who gave it- That is settled then said Robert laughing good uaturedly for he well knew what a weird spectacle he must present o the bewildered old gentle manEven Sir Arthur Deanq was fascinated by the ragged and hairy giant who carried himself so masterfully and helped everybody over the stile at the right moment He tried to develop the change in the conversation By the way he said how came you to be on the Sirdar I have a list of all the passengers and crew and your name does not appear therein Oh that is easily accounted for I shipped as n steward In the name of Robert Jenks stewardsYes of the promised explanation- Iris rapidly gathered the drift of her lovers wishes Come father she cried merrily I am aching to see what the ships stores which you and Robert pin your faith to can do for me in the shape qt garments I have the utmost belief In the British navy and oven a skeptic should be convinced of its Infallibility If U M S orient is able to provide a ladys outfit Sir Arthur Deune gladly availed him self of the proffered compromise He assisted Iris Into the boat though that active young person was fur better able to support him and a word to the officer in command sent the gig flying buck to the ship Anstrufher during a momentary delay made u small request on his own account Lieutenant Play don nearly as big it man as Robert dispatched note to his servant and the gig speedily returned with u com plete assortment orClothlug and linen The man also brought a dressing case with the result that u dip In the bath and ten minutes In the hands of an expert valet made Anstruther a new man Acting under his advice the bodies of the dead were thrown into the la goon the wounded were collected In tho hut to be attended to by the ships surgeon and the prisoners were paraded In front of Mir Jan who Identified every mutt and found by counting heads that none was missing Robert did not forget to write out a fornial notice and fasten It to the rock This proceeding further mystified the officers of the Orient who had gradually formed a connected Idea of the great fight made by the shipwrecked pair though Anstruther squirmed Inwardly when he thought of the manner in which Iris would picture the scene As it was he had the first iinnings and he did not fall to use the opportunity In the few terse words which the mili tant Briton best understands be described the girls fortitude her unflagging cheerfulness her uncomplaining rejidiness to do au4 dare When lie ended Vne Erst lieutenant 722 commanded the boats sent IQ pursuit of the flying Dyaks the Orient sank both sampans as soon as they were launchedsummed up the general verdict You do not need our admiration Captain Anstruther Each man of us envies you from the bottom of his soulThere Is an error about nry rank he said I did once hold a commission In the Indian army but I was court martialed and cashiered In Hongkong six months ago I was unjustly convicted on a grave charge and I hope some day to clear myself Meanwhile I am a mere civilian It was only Miss Deanes generous sympathy which led her to mention my former rank Mr Playdon Had another of the Orients twelve pounder shells suddenly burst In the midst of the group of officers It would have created less dismay than this un expected avowal Court martlaled Cashiered None but a service man can grasp the awful significance of those words to the commissioned ranks of the army and navy Anstruther well knew what he was doing Somehow be found nothing hard In the performance of these penances non Of course the ugly truth must be revealed the moment Lord Ventnor heard his name It was not fair to the good fellows crowding around himand offering every attention that the frank hospitality of the British sailor could Suggest to permit them to adopt the tone of friendly equality which rigid discipline If nothing else would not al low them to maintain The first lieutenant by reason of his tank was compelled to say something That Is a devilish bad Job Mr An atruther he blurted out Well you know I had to tell you He smiled unaffectedly at the won dering circle He too was an officer and appreciated their sentiments They were unfelgnedly sorry for him a man 110 brave and modest such a splendid type of the soldier and gentleman yet by their common law an outcast Nor could they wholly understand his demeanor There was a noble dignity In his candor a conscious innocence that l disdained to ghield Itself under a par tial truth The first lieutenant again phrased the thoughts of his Juniors I and every other man In the ship cannot help but sympathize with you But whatever may be your recordif- you were an escaped convict Mr An Btruther no one could withhold from you the praise deserved for your mag nificent stand against overwhelming odds Our duty Is plain We will bring you to Singapore where the others will no doubt wish to go Immediately I will tell the captain what you have been good enough to acquaint us w1t1t Meanwhile we will give you every assistance and errattentlon In our power A murmur of approbation ran through the little circle Roberts face chapsIintrusion Into the mlersltyI of a young lady In hat carrying a Trouvllle parasol and most exquisitely gloved and booted made every one gasp Oh Robert dear how could you I actually didnt know you Thus Iris bewitchingly attired was gazing now with provoking admiration at Robert who certainly offered almost us great a contrast to his former state as did the girl herself He returned her look with Interest Would any man believe he laugh ed that clothes would do so much for n woman TtWhat a left handed compliment But come dearest CaptalniFItzroy and Lord Ventrior have come ashore with father and me They want us to show them everything You will ex cuse him wont you 1 she added with a seraphic smile to the others They walked oft together Jimmy gasped a fat midshipman to a lanky youth Shes got on your togs Meaning that Iris had ransacked the Orients theatrical wardrobe and pound ed on the swell outfit of the principal female Impersonator In the ships com pany CHAPTER XVI ORD VENTNOR was no fool While Iris was transforming LJ herself front a semisavage con dition Into a semblance of an ultra chic Parisienue Sir Arthur Deane told the earl something of the state of affairs on the Island His lordship a handsome saturnine man cool insolently polite counseled patience toleration even silent recognition of Anstruthers undoubted claims for services rendered She Is an enthusiastic high spirited girl he urged upon his surprised hearer who expected a very different expression of opinion This fellow Ans struther Is a plausible sort of rascal a good wan In uHlght place too just the owhoItwice Further amazement for the shipowner Yes Its quite true I Interfered with his little games and he gave me the usual reward of the devils apothe cary Leave Iris alone At present she Is strung up to an intense pitch of gratitude having barely escaped a ter rifle fate Let her come back to the normal Anstrufhers shady record must gradually leak out That Rill disgust her He Is hard upcut off by his people and that sort of thing There you probably have the measure of his scheming He knows quite well that he can never marry your daughter It Ja all a matter 5f price C TO BE CONTINUED NEXT WEEK 5000Reward will be paid toanjj person who can find one atom of opium chloral
