articles in which there is much iron or steel that the mailorder houses have practiced their greatest deception They offer a stove that appears like a standard make 18 to 22 stove for 8 If they have a stove for 8 or 10 as good a the local dealer sells for 16 or 18116 latter would gladly buy them by the car load of Tklr Mail Order House But they havent They have undersized light weight potmetal makeshifts that a local dealer wouldnt dare to handle The difference in weight between a firstclass hardcoal burner said to ie just the same is 215 pounds which at 7 cents a pound the price of outside castings would make 1705 Scrimp int is done in the nickel parts that cost from 15 to 20 cents a pound Then there is the difference in workmanship and material The one party is trying to make the very best goods that money and skill can produce and the other is trying to see how cheap he can turn out his goods Then must be figured the freights drayage mounting back ing extra pipe damper and delivering we have to go out and close up a flue 41holehole a little and a great many other things we have to look after which adds on hardcoal stoves or ranges from 3 to 5 each If you will buy the same goods under the same conditions your home merchant can take better care of you than one several hundred miles away Mailorder stoves are made in foun dries where the molders suffer no dis count for poor castings Once poured the molders work is done and he is paid for it Defective castings all en ter into stoves If there are big air holes in them they are plugged with rivets and the small to convey to the callers the information that Mrs Clark was not at home The butler obeyed orders and the three leaders from the west side flounced down the steps with feelings too turbulent for words 1They hastened to pour forth thfeir indignation to the other members of the smart set The other members were sympathetic How rude of Mrs Clark The idea were some of the comments No indejed they would not calU But they did The fact that three of their fellows had been snubbed did not deter others from having a try at making their way into the presence of the wife of Montanas senior senator Some of themin every instance- a those who had known Mrs Clark during her girlhood when she lived in poverty with her parents herewere admitted and welcomed cordially Then it leaked out that Mrs Clark preferred the friends of the old days to those who seek to pay her homage now that she is wealthy but who failed to recog nize her or any member of her family at the time when she was Miss La Chappelle and known only as the daughter of a poor French physician familyS exclucame sive set in Butte has suffered a division from which it is not likely to re cover in months A dozen or so of stately dames who have been refused admittance to the Clark house and their immediate friends who have never known Mrs Clark are loud in their denunciation of her action in re pulsing their advances Many of these women have been leaders in soda affairs here for many years 1 Leg Fractured Mr John Wheatly a wellknown carpenter who lives near town was seriously injured last Saturday while engaged in raising a barn on the farm of Mr P S Barber near Valley Hill He was assisting to raise a heavy timber by means of a derrick when the derrick slipped loosing the timber and letting it fall to the ground Mr Wheatlys leg was caught by the heavy timber and fractured just above the ankle A physician was immediately summoned and the sufferer made as comfortable as possible While the fracture is painful it is not serious and we hope Mr WheatlY may soon be out again fiscal Courtr rAt a call session of the Fiscal court held here yesterday it was ordered that a concrete walk and curbing be put Cumberland Telephone Company the right of way over the public roads of county Thg resolution was made a part of the consideration that they carry out the franchise recently purchased of the city of macadamizing Covington and Virginia avenues As soon as some preliminary matters can be arranged the work of improvement will begin Mr Hawkins Denies IL Lexington Herald W B Hawkins entered an emphatic denial last night of the published reports that efforts to finance the defunct Tobacco Growers Company had failed The purpose of the organization which fell through last year because of a fail tire to get it financed was to get control of the burley tobacco crop An effort has been on foot to reorgsmize the company and it was published in several newspapers that the effort had been abandoned Mr Hawkins stated to a reporter for The Herald that a committee is now hardat work and if there is any inti matron of an intention to abandon the effort he knows nothing about it HILLSBORO We are having Wheat Yield Owensboro Messenger Wheat harvest iion at full swing in Daviess county arid the bulk of the crop will be in theshock in a week The indications are that the yield will be much better than was expected a few weeks ago Judging from the number of binders sold this must be the largest wheat crop ever harvested in Daviess county The same is true with regard to the hay crop The T J Turley Company has sold this season over 300 mowers and binders in Daviess county by far the largest sales ever made in Owensboro in a single season The supply on hand was exhausted and to all appearances the demand is as strong as ever Binders were yes terday ordered shipped by express so urgent was the demand for them This is the first time in the history of Owens boro that heavy articlessuch as bind erShave been ordered by express The machines received last night in thatway weighed over 1000 pounds The dealers say that the short crop of the past two seasons accounts for the unusual demand for binders this year With light crops the farmers have not felt justi fied in making any outlay in machinery The result has been that a large per cent di the binders and mowers have gone to pieces so that they can not be operated and have to be replaced by new onesl Another unusual thing about the binder trade this season is that there is a strong demand for binders with eightfoot blades So far as
