frederickstown Last Saturday Newell Hardin Slashed Billy Perkins With a KnifeNo Serious Reesults Apprehended IastjSaturdaI y Newell Hardin and Billie Perkins in which the latter recieved several severe cuts the most serious of which was one in the throat It is said that the knife which Hardin was using closed 4 and had it not been for this Perkins would doubtless have been killed It is alleged that Perkins struck Hardin and called him a vile name whereupon he Hardin drew a knife and immediately proceeded to settle matters when as stated above his knife closed and before he could again open it bystanders interfered Perkins received four cuts none of which are deep and it is thought that he will soon recover One of those who witnessed the difficulty said that Perkins presented a ghastly sight when he staggered down the street with the blood flowing from the wound in his neck calling for a doctor Mr Hardin is an old man quiet and peaceable The trouble between the two men is of long standing Death of James L Brown Mr James L Brownwho formerly resided at Tatham Springs in this county died at his home near Fairfield Nelson county Monday June 5 ofI spinal meningitis after a brief illness Mr Brown was thirty years old an- dfor quite a while had been a loyal member of the Baptist church He was well and favorably knownin Wash ington county and his friends here were shocked when they learned of his death The deceased left this county about four years ago and had since resided in Nelson county He leaves a wife mother two brothers and two sisters to mourn his death Mrs G W Robinson his mother resides near Texas this county and his sisters and brothers are Mrs Robert Noe and MrI s111Doravile Funeral services were conducted at Little Union church yesterday after which interment occurred in the cemetery at that place The deceased vas a man of many pretty traits of character and his death is mourned by a host of friends To his wife and other rela tives many friends Death of Daniel Willham Mr Daniel Wj ham died at his home in Danville on Tuesday May 30 at the age of eightyone years He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his death The body was laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery here Barlow Vs Barlow The divorce suit of Barlow vs Barlow was tried before Special Judge Feland last week taking up nearly two days of the courts time Husband and wife each prayed for an absolute divorce and the custody of the sevenyearold boy Mrs Barlow wanted 2000 alimony which was refused but she was granted a divorce and the custody of the child The injunction against the husband restraining him from selling his farm remains in force pending an appeaL Prob- ablyr no appeal will be taken ii Resolutions of Respect Whereas God has willed to call Brother D S at 3 cenas and bulls at 22 cents W G Sims to John Roberts seven yearling steers for 100 W L Graham from Claude Britton a mule 80 and one from T H Pinkstoh for 70 Mr Mc Micken from William Foster a mule 85 These are good prices for mule colts but I think they were all sired by Powell the big jack The highest price paid for August delivery of lambs was to James Kyler by B Lawsonsix- cents for the new schoolsystem When the school question was being agitatedsome two years ago there were those who were to a graded school on theJgrounds that taxation would be so increased as to be burdensome and that the number of pupils to attend would not justify such increase in the tax rate The first years success has converted these ob jectors to enthusiastic supporters The fact that Springfield now has a school second to none of its kind in our State has increased the demand for town property thereby increasing its value easily offsetting the burden of the tax It has attracted a number of representative families from the country fori the man who moves to be near a first class school is always a good citizen and a desirable addition to any cdm munity It is proving a blessing to the county too For those who formerly were compelled to go elsewhere to get a thorough course of training find now the opportunity near their homes It lessens the cost of an education to them and makes it possible for many worthy boys and girls to equip themselves for lifes work who other wise would not have this opportunity We believe it is no disparagement toi any other institution to say that the the school is the harmony and good feeling that exist among the pupils A generous rivalry for what is best to make the most of their oppor tunities has been inspired amongthem but back of that is love rays in McCracken county ha93 8aG school children of whom 634 are colored c OLIVER CROAKE One of the Countys Oldest and Most Honored Gtizens Passes AwayDied Last Sunday of Pneumonia At Croakes Station in this county last Sunday morning at 830 oclock Mr Oliver Croake one of Washington countys most loved honored and re spected citizens passed away after a brief illness of pneumonia There were few men in this section who were better known than Mr Croake and there were few whopos sessed more loyal friends He was that character of man who made mends and kept them and when the news of his death was learned many expressions of sorrow were heard upon the streetS of Springfield The deceased was born in this county in 1832 and had spent his entire life near the place where he was born His life was spent on the farm this calling suited his nature because his was a sunny dispositionone that loved all the beauties of nature those beauties that are so vividly depicted in the meadows and upon hills of the farmMr Croake was married October 23 1856 to Miss Etta Shatmty and to this union nine children were born all of whom are now living among them being Sheriff Byron Croake of this place His wife preceded him to the grave on ly six months ago After this happy union was broken Mr Croake although retaining much of his genial nature was never again the same man and when he went away on last Sunday to be with her whom he so fondly loved here upon earth there came to him that sweet contentment which belongs to those whose lives nave been wellspent The deceased was a devout member of the New Hope Baptist church funeral services occurred there Monday afternoon The funeral was conducted by Rev Dr Weavers of Louisville assisted by the pastor of the church and Rev Williams of this place Dr Weaver officiated at the wedding of Mr and Mrs Croake and he also preached the funeral of Mrs Croake Mr Croake was a member of the Masonic Order of this place and his burial was conducted by the Masons a large crowd being present The funeral procession is said to have been one of the largest ever seen at New Hope which told plainer than words of the esteem and admiration in which the departed speaking of the value of the milk cows and the income to be derived from them when they are of good stock told of two cows he has on his farm that are probably the best in the State From the milk of two cows he says his wife churns sixty pounds of butter each monthone cow producing forty and the other twenty pounds This butter if all sold would bring 15 each month on the open market or a yearly
