by C J Haydon i 1 L IiLt The Graded School r itit b lj lt i tr The session of the Graded School that closed with the declamatory contest on closetofnew school building and silenced all objections to the new schoolsystem When the school question was being agitatedsome two years ago there were those who were to a graded school on theJgrounds that taxation would be so increased as to be burdensome and that the number of pupils to attend would not justify such increase in the tax rate The first years success has converted these ob jectors to enthusiastic supporters The fact that Springfield now has a school second to none of its kind in our State has increased the demand for town property thereby increasing its value easily offsetting the burden of the tax It has attracted a number of representative families from the country fori the man who moves to be near a first class school is always a good citizen and a desirable addition to any cdm munity It is proving a blessing to the county too For those who formerly were compelled to go elsewhere to get a thorough course of training find now the opportunity near their homes It lessens the cost of an education to them and makes it possible for many worthy boys and girls to equip themselves for lifes work who other wise would not have this opportunity We believe it is no disparagement toi any other institution to say that the school here established means more to the character and happiness of the people in Washington county than any other institution or organization initiThe hope of Kentucky and of the South MAUD Miss with a very painful accident last Wednesday While walking through the yard her foot caught in a wire throwing her to the ground Her hand struck a nail in a board and the nail almost pene trated her hand She has suffered great pain but is some better at this writing is in better educational facilities Ignorance is now admitted to be mans worst enemy An educated man makes a better citizen better husband better father better man than he who has neglected to develop the talents with which he has been endowed Ignorance is not only a crime but a sin as well a crime to yodr fellowman to whom you owe your best service a sin against God who did not intend that you should bury your talent even though it be but one in a napkin Success today comes to the man well trained and developed Education is no longer the peculiar ac complishment of the professions but is coming to be diffused among the farmers and those who toil with hand a well as head Springfield has cause fo pride in her school The corps o thefusteeseople upon whose cooperation after all the success or failure must depend are loyal and enthusiastic The cours- of instruction is thorough and comer hensive including all the branch necessary to a liberal education Mor than 400 pupils have been enrolled dur ing the past year and their progress has been flattering to them and then instructors The best indication of th success of the school is the harmony and good feeling that exist among the pupils A generous rivalry for what is best to make the most of their oppor tunities has been inspired amongthem but back of that is love for the school No school can succeed where this is lacking We believe that it is the duty of all to support it generously and its success in the coming years will be even more marked than at present in this county last Sunday morning at 830 oclock Mr Oliver Croake one of Washington countys most loved honored and re spected citizens passed away after a brief illness of pneumonia There were few men in this section who were better known than Mr Croake and there were few whopos sessed more loyal friends He was that character of man who made mends and kept them and when the news of his death was learned many expressions of sorrow were heard upon the streetS of Springfield The deceased was born in this county in 1832 and had spent his entire life near the place where he was born His life was spent on the farm this calling suited his nature because his was a sunny dispositionone that loved all the beauties of nature those beauties that are so vividly depicted in the meadows and upon hills of the farmMr Croake was married October 23 1856 to Miss Etta Shatmty and to this union nine children were born all of whom are now living among them being Sheriff Byron Croake of this place His wife preceded him to the grave on ly six months ago After this happy union was broken Mr Croake although retaining much of his genial nature was never again the same man and when he went away on last Sunday to be with her whom he so fondly loved here upon earth there came to him that sweet contentment which belongs to those whose lives nave been wellspent The deceased was a devout member of the New Hope Baptist church funeral services occurred there Monday afternoon The funeral was conducted by Rev Dr Weavers of Louisville assisted by the pastor of the church and Rev Williams of this place Dr Weaver officiated at the wedding of Mr and Mrs Croake and he also preached the funeral of Mrs Croake Mr Croake was a member of the Masonic Order of this place and his burial was conducted by the Masons a large crowd being present The funeral procession is said to have been one of the largest ever seen at New Hope which told plainer than words of the esteem and admiration in which the departed one was held by the people who knew him The Sun together with hundreds of friends extends condolence to the be reaved ones r Valuable tows Harrodsburg Herald Mr Ed Hulett of Jessamine county in speaking of the value of the milk cows and the income to be derived from them when they are of good stock told of two cows he has on his farm that are probably the best in the State From the milk of two cows he says his wife churns sixty pounds of butter each monthone cow producing forty and the other twenty pounds This butter if all sold would bring 15 each month on the open market or a yearly income of 180 Besides this income from these two cows they have skimmed and buttermilk to feed the chickens and hogs a fattening material that is useful 1YThe Curbstone Politician The curbstone loneliness would take their wives sisters and sweethearts along how much nicer it would be Should they ever do such a thing we will elect a queen to crown the hero of the day You see while the men sarcastic bout Up on one occasion when the Rev in rbNeweo ple of that city that the devilwas loose in their midst andadvised 4h that they make a determined fort to get rid of him When the meeting closed at New Alban Parson Jones swooped down upon Louisville bringing to the people the startling information that his Satanic Majesty was abroad in Louisville and made the same spiel about getting him out of Louisville that he made in New Albany Then it was that Mr Allen suggested through The Times that as the devil hfrecently followed Rev New Albany to Louisville possibly it would be wisest to wait until he followed Rev Sam to the next town It is said that the famous evangelist who is stingingrejoinder I come back at Mr Allen l Every loudmouthed blackguard in the community ought to be on last expedient We are abandoned by all save the Lord and It does not appear to be his holy will to help us on earth We can struggle on here until we die Is that right When one of us may live Her very candor had betrayed her She would go away with these mon rtrous captors endure them even flat ter them until she and they were far removed from the Island and then she would kill herself In her Innocence she imagined that self destruc tion under such circumstances was a pardonable offense She only give a life to save a life and greater love than this Is not known to God r man The sailor In a he looked at her and a mist seemed to shut her out from I Is sights she lost to him already Was all that had gone before an Idle dream of Joy and grief a wizards gli npse of mirrored happiness and you really did love mer Dear dear How often would she repeat that wondrous phrase Together they bent over the tiny slips of paper There It was again I love you twice blazoned In magic symbols With blushing eagerness she told him how by mere accident of course she caught sight of her own name It was not very wrong was it to pick up that tiny scrap or those Others which she could not help seeing and which unfolded their simple tale so truthfully Wrong It was so delightfully right that he must kiss her again to empha size his convictions They grew calmer more seateItwas so undeniably true they loved one another that the fact was becoming venerable with age Iris was perhaps the first to recognize Its quiet certainty As I cannot get you to talk reason ably she protested I must appeal to your sympathy I am hungry and oh so thirsty The girl had hardly eaten a morsel for her midday meal Then she was despondent utterly broken hearted Now she was filled with new hope There was a fresh motive in existence Whether destined to live an hour or half a century she would never never leave him nor of course could be ever ever leave her Some things were quite Impossible for example that they should part Jenks brought her a biscuit a tin of meat and that most doleful cup of champagneIt exactly frappe he said handing her the insipid beverage but under other conditions it isa wine al most worthy to toast you In She fancied she had never before no tired what a charming smile he had Toast Is a peculiarly suitable word she cried I am simply friz Cling In thesewarm clothes She stopped For the first time since that prehistoric period when she was Miss Deane and he Mr Jenks she remembered the manner of her garments It is not the warm clothing you feel so much as the want of air explained the sailoV readily This tarpaulin has made the place very stuffy but we must put up with it until sundown By the way what Is thatt A light tan on the tarred canvas di rectly over his head land caught his car IriS gad of the diversion told him she had heard the noise three or four times but fancied It was caused by the occasional rustling of the shejSt on the uprights Jenks had not allowed his attention to wander altogether from external events Since the Dyaks Inst escapade there was no sign of them in the val ley or on either beach Not for trivial cause would they come again within range of Jeuks rifle They waited and listened silently Another tap sounded on the tarpaulin In a different place and they both cqn turred In the belief that something had darted In curved flight over the ledge and fallen on top of their protecting shield Let us see what the game Is ex claimed the sailor He crept to the b ick of the ledge and drew himself up until ho could reach over the sheet He returned carrying in his hand a couple of tiny arrows There are no less than seven of these things sticking In the canvas he said They dont look very terrible I suppose that Is what my Indian friend meant by warning me against the trees ou the right He did not tell Iris all the Mohammedan said There was no need to alarm her causelessly Even while they examined the curious little missile another Hew up from the valley and lodged 0n the roof of their shelter The shaft of the arrow made of some extremely hard wood was about teu Inches In length Affixed to It way a pointed fish bone sharp but not barb ed and not fastened In a manner sug gestive of much strength The arrow was neither feathered nor grooved for a bowstring Altogether It seemed to be a childish weapon to be used by men equipped with lead and steel Jenks could not understand the ap pearance of this toy Evidently the Dyaks believed In its efficacy or they would not keep on pertinaciously drop ping an arrow on the ledge a The last narrow fell nnd he sprang to the right of the ledge How do they nre nr usicea ins Do they throw it I will soon tell you he replied reaching for a rifle Do not go out yet she entreated him They cannot harm us Perhaps we may learn more by keeping quiet They will not continue shooting these 1Againthem in a graceful parabola This one fell short Missing the tarpaulin it al most dropped oir the girls outstretched hand She picked it up The fish bone point had snapped by contact with the floor of the ledge She sought for and found the small tip Seer she said It seems to have been dipped in something It is quite discolored Jeuks frowned peculiarly A star tling explanation had suggested itself to him Fragments of forgotten lore were taking cohesion in his mind Put It down Quick he cried Iris obeyed him with wonder in her eyes He spilled a tehspoonful of cham pagne into a small hollow of the rock and steeped one of the fish bones in the liquid Within a few seconds the cham pagne assumed a greenish tinge and the bone became white Then he knew Good heavens he exclaimed these are poisoned arrows shot through a blowpipe I have never before seen one but II have often read about them The bamboos the Dyaks carried were sumpitans These fish bones have been steeped In the Juice of the upas tree Iris my dear girl if one of them had so much ns scratched your finger noth ing on earth could save you She paled and drew back In sudden horror Another tap sounded on their thrice welcome covering Evidently the Dyaks would persist In their efforts to get one of thqse poisoned darts home Jenks debated silently whether it would bel better to create a commotion thus the to believe morItalrow fell rush out and try conclusions with dumdum bullets against the sum piton blowers lIe decided In favor of the latter course He wished to dishearten his assailants to cram down their throats the belief that he was invulnerable and could visit their every effort with a deadly reprisal Iris of course protested when he explained his project But the fighting spirit prevailed Their love idyll must yield to the needs of the hour lIe had not long to wait The last arrow fell and he sprang to the ex treme right of the ledge First he looked through that Invaluable screen of grass Three Dyaks were on the ground and a fourth In the fork of a tree They were each armed with a blowpipe He in the tree was Just fit ting an arrow Into the bamboo tube The others wqre watching him Jenks raised his rifle fired and the warrior In the tree pitched headlong to the ground A second shot stretched companion on top of him One man Jumped Into the bushes and gotfaway but the fourth tripped over his unwieldy sumpltnnj and a bullet tore a large section from his skull The sailor then mused himself with breaking the bam boos by firing at them He came back to the white faced girl I fancy that further practice with blowpipes will be at a discount on Rainbow Island he cried cheerfully But Iris was anxious and distrait It Is very sad she said that we are obliged to secure our owns safety by the ceaseless slaughter of human beings Is there no offer we canmrike them no promise of future gain to tempt them to abandon hostilities None whatever These Borneo Dy aks are bred from Infancy to prey on their fellow creatures To be strangers and defenseless is to court pillage and massacre at their hands I think no more of shooting them than of smashing a clay pigeon Killing a mad dog is perhaps a better simile But Robert dear how long can we hold out What Are you growing tired of me already He hoped to divert her thoughts from this constantly recurring topic Twice within the hour had It been broached and dismissed but Iris would not per mit him to shirk it again Sfhe made no reply simply regarding him with at wistful smile So Jenks sat down by her side and rehearsed the hopes and fears which perplexed him He determined jthat there should be no further concealment between them If they failed to secure water that night if the Dyala maln tamed a strict siege or tne rock throughout the whole of next day well they might survive it was proble matical Best leave matters in Gods bands With feminine persistency she clung to the subject detecting his unwilling ness to discuss a possible final stage In their sufferings Robert she whispered fearfully you will never let me fall Into the power of the chief will you Not while I live You must live Dont you under stand I would go with them to save you But I would have died by my own hand Robert mylove you mu t do this thing before the end I must be the first to die The sailor wrestled with the great problem He may be pardo ed If his heart quailed and he groaned aloud Iris he said solemnly whatever happens unless I am struck dead at your feet I promise you that we shall pass the boundary hand In hand Be mine the punishment if we have decided wrongly And now he cried tossing his head In a defiant access of every let us have done with the morgue For my part I refuse to ac knowledge I am inside until the gates ciajig behind me They chatted In lighter vein with sufih pendulum swing back to noncha lance that none would have deemed it possible for these two to have already determined the momentous issue of the pending struggle should it go against themAnd so the sun sank to rest in the sea and the stars pierced the deepen ing blue of the celestial arch while the patientlyABefore the light failed Jenks gath ered all the poisoned arrows and ground heir venomed points to powder beneath his heel Gladly would Iris and he have dispensed with the friend ly protection of the tarpaulin when the cool eyenlng breeze came from the south But such a thing might not be even considered Several hours of dark ness must elapse before the moon rose and during that period were their foes so minded they would be absolutely at the mercy of the sumpltan shafts if not cohered he their Imoenetrable buckler TO
