parents Brittons story of theshoo ting is quite different from that of the bystanders He claims self defense and says that while he regrets the unfortunate affair it was unavoidable on his part as Shewmaker had his hand in his hip pocket and that he believed his life vas in danger when he fired the shot An examination of the dead mans clothes failed to reveal a weapon of any description Bardstown last Friday to play the Bardstown school team The home doingIninth inning the score card recorded an errorless game for the Springfieldag gregation The Crawfordites were unable to hit either Colvin or Waters the Springfield slabmen while Hibbs and Lewis the Bardstown box artists were easy for the home teams batsmen It was a regular oldtime swatting bee on the part of the Springfieldites who during the nine innings piled up 28 runs but the thermometer was at zero all the way through for Bardstown Before returning home the Springfield boys were delightfully entertained through courtesy of Professor Crawford at his annual matricula where beauti ful music and more beautiful girls lent an extra charm to the occasion and a general good time was enjoyed by all RUSSIA S- SHIPS Wiped From the Bosom of the Blowly a Bloody War In the great naval battle fought Sat urday and Sunday in the Straits Sf Korea the Japanese obtained a com plete and overwhelming victory Late advices show that Rpjestvenskys fleet composed of all his most effective and powerful ships was completely shat tered According to the latest infor mation two Russian battleships one coastdefense armorclad five cruisers two specialservice ships and three destroyers were sunk and there were captured two battleships two coast = defense armorclads and one spcial service ship- Rojestvenekys flagship escaped badly damaged and with other vessels of his broken fleet is being pursued by the victorious Japanese Rear AdmialNe bogatoff however was captured with 3000 other prisoners It seems probable that in their crippled condition other Russian vessels will fall into the hands of the Japanese before they can reach Vladivostok While London rumors say that several Japanese vessels were lost Admiral Tog officially reports that his squadron was not damaged A number of Rus sian vessels still remain near Shanghai but ii is evident that as a fighting force the great fleet has been destroyed No details of the battle have yet been permitted to pass the Japanese tensor but Tokio dispatches make clear that Admiral Togo is pressing his advantage and harassing the Russian vessels which are attempting to take refuge at Vladivostok ahd make more complete his already sweeping victory Everything New and Original A good attraction will always draw a paying crowd and none know this fact better than people of the globe suddenly developeda remarkable liking for the Melican man and so he came across bringing along his papermuslin clothes straw slippers opium outfit a decidedly low standard of morals and last but not least his exceptionally labor After he had begun to do business at both ends of the line and was succeeding in all his undertakings beyond his most sin guine expectations he wrote back to Ah Sin One Lung and Hi Lo that there was plenty of room on this side that hefound the infant nation velly good and extended a cordial invitation to all his relatives and friends to come over and assist him in loving the Melican man and worshiping the Eagle on a piece of money Hops communication must have created a sensation wherever it was exhibited and read in the Flowery Kingdom for not only did his own relatives and friends accept the invitatio to take a lookrbut they also brought with them their rela tives and neighbors and then some Not very many moons later when our almondeyed and orangetinted cousins from the land of Confucius and Gen ghis Khan began to grow too numer ous to mention on Americas fertile soil some of the more farsighted and faithful of our watch dogs scented a menace to our general wellbeing arid saw that those libertyloving sons who must root hog or die but who were the very backbone of the nation must be protected and the Heathen Chine received a resounding crack on his cra niumfrom the Big Stick That blow was sufficient to convince him that our cornfields and potato patches were a trifle more important and valuable than the weedy flower garden he had passed up that we could worry through without his services as a washer of our soiled linen that we preferred hash to chop suey thatwe were not stuck on his opium Pints immoral practices and Corn and Alfalfa Special Anderson News While in attendance at the meeting ofthe Farmers jClub last Saturday Commissioner of Agriculture Vreeland said that he is arranging to run a special train over all of the state bearing with it an exhibit of corn and alfalfa clover the object b ing to increase the interest in these two crops and to give instruction in the best methods of cultivation The tram will be accom panied by the ablest agriculturalspeak ers to be found in the country and lec tures will b delivered at each stopping place It is said that the running of such a train through Iowa increased the value of the corn crop of that state cheap labor and that we would not per mit him to retard our progress in the pursuit of peace and happiness His exclusion was both wise arid timely In this instance at least the stable door was securely locked before the Lexington colt was stolen Very good Now Mr Roosevelt begins to view withalarm H the class of immigration that is pouring in upon us something like 5000 souls landing in this country weekly Well isnt it about time to begin to view soj serious a matter with deep concern If there is any thing of more importance just at this stage of our performance than an earn est consideration of one of the most vital subjects that has been presented to the United States in many years it does not appear on the programme One must be blind indeed not to see what the inevitable result must be if our fair land is to be made the dump ing ground for the offscourings of con tinental Europe a few years longer We are already loaded to the guards with labor troubles and thathese should be augmented by laying the last straw in permitting such uraesir able cattle to come in competition with the dignified selfrespecting work ing man of America is astonishing to say the least It is unquestionably the sincere wish of every loyal American citizen to see the most stringent legislation enacted at an early day looking to the final exclusion of these assassins and trouble breeders To close the door on the Celestial Empire and throw it wide open to every other nation does not appear consistent Have we not swapped the witch for the devil If Mr Roosevelt desires to retire to pri vate life with an extra buttonhole bouquet from American citizens in gen eral and the laboring people in particular he can do so by recommending in aggravating prob lems with which grand juries have to deal is that of the selling o liquor to minors He said that it was very probable that the youngsters obtained their drinks through other sources than the saloon In other words they buy a pint bottle give some old er person the money and the promise ofa drink and direct that they go to the saloon procure the whisky Thus i this manner boys from fifteen to twenty years of age learn their first lessons in rumaAVhen they obtain their drinks in this manner it is exceedingly dif ficult for a grand jury to findan indictment against the guilty party for the simple reason that itne man who makes it a business of buying whisky for minors will swear a lie as quickly as he would eat a ham sandwich Again he can not be forced tc indict himself and the youth foi whom he obtained the whisk goes fishing when the grand jury meets and thus by hook and crook justice is cheated The member of the grand jury vho was talking to us upon this subject said that he would like to see a law upon our statutes simi lar to the Indiana cigarette law He believed that a law of this ture would result in keeping th young men of Kentucky sober at least until they reached their majority A law like the Indiana cigarette law applicable to the drinking of whisky by minors would give the officers of the law an opportunity to arrest and the courts an opportunity to convict every minor who had indulged even to the extent of touching his tongue to a stopper Harry McCarty of the Jessa mine Journal lwas nominated fort e Legislature last week His Nevertheless by high noon they were suffering again The time passed very slowly The sun rose to the zenith and filled the earth and air with his ardor It seemed to be a miracle now appreciated for the first time in their lives that the sea did not dry up and the leaves wither on the trees The silence the deathly inactivity of all things became intol erable The girl bravely tried to con fine her thoughts to the task of the hour She displayed alert watchful ness an Instant readiness to warn her companion of the slightest movement among the trees or by the rocks to the northwest this being the arc of their periphery assigned to her Looking at a sunlit space from cover and looking at the same place wheu sweltering ii the direct rays of a tropical sun are kindred operations strangely diverse In achievement Iris could not reconcile the physical sensitiveness of the hour with the careless hard hood of the preceding days Her eyes ached somewhat for she had tilted her souwester to the back of her head In the effort to cool her throbbing temples She put up her right hand to shade the too vivid reflection of tha glistening sea and was astounded to find that in a few minutes the back of her hand was scorched A faint sound of distant shouting disturbed her pain ful reverie How is it she asked that we feel the heat so much today I had hardly noticed It before For two good reasons forced Idle ness and radiation from thIs confound ed rock 1oreover this Is the hottest day we have experienced on the island There Is not a breath of air and the hot weather has just commenced Dont you think she said huskily that our position here is quite hopeless They were talking to t ach other sideways The sailor never turned his gaze from the southern end of the valley It ix no more hopeless now than then we will either obtain water or leave tills place Surely we can do neither We may be compelled to do both But how In this hIs hour of extremest need the man was vouchsafed n s1 red of luck Before he could frame a feeble pretext for his too sanguine prediction a sampan appeared SOO yards from Turtle beach strenuously Raddled by throe men The vague hallooing they had heard was explained The Dyaks though to the manner born were weary of sun scorched rocks and salt water The boat waq coming In response to their signals and the sight Inspired Jenks with fresh hope Like a lightning flash came the reflection that if lie cpulil keep them away from the well and destroy the sampan now hastening to their assist mice perhaps conveying the bulk of their stores they would soon tire of slaking their thirst on the few pitcher plants growing on the north shore Conic quick heshouted adjusting tic Lark sight of a rifle Lie down and aim at the front of that boat a little short if anything Jt doesnt matter If time bullets strike the sea first lie placed time weapon in readiness for her and commenced operations him self before Iris could reach lilts side Soon both rifles were pitching twenty shots a minute at the sampan The result of theIr long range practice was not long in doubt The Dyaks danced from seat to scat in a state of wild excitement One man was hurled over board Then the craft lurched sea ward In the strong current and Jeuks told JrJa to leaves thc rest to him 4 Before lie could uuiiiy a second mag azine a fortunate bullet ripped a plank out and the sampan filled and went down amid a shrill cll ot execration from the back of the cliff The two Dyaks yet lining endeavored to swim ashore half a mile through shark invested reefs The sailor did not even trouble about them After a few fran tic struggles each doomed wretch flung up his arms and vanished In the clear atmosphere the onlookers could see black fins cutting the pellucid sea They were quieting downthe thirst fiend was again slowly salting their veins when something of a dirty white color fluttered into sight from behind the base of the opposite cliff It was rapidly withdrawn to reappear after an Interval Now it was held more steadily and a brown arm became visi ble As Jenks did not fire a turbaned head popped Into sight It was the Mo hammedanNo it he roared Me Eng lish speak it Dont pantaloons of Chinese silk a man young and powerfully built and the brown skinned white clothed Mohan medan bony tall and gray with hardship looked up at the occupants of the ledge Iris slim and freedom to be told that they must again endure the irksome confinement the active suffering the slow horrors of n siege in that rocky prison almost distracted her Jenks wus very stern and curt in his reply We must make the best of a bad business he said If we rare In a tight place the Dyaks are not much better off and eighteen of their number are dead or wounded You forget too that ProvIdencQ has When he purposely en deavored to make her dislike him She walked along the ledge and tim idly bent over him Forgive me she whispered I did forget for the moment not only the goodness of Providence but also your self sacrificing devotion I am only a woman and I dont want to die yet but I will not live unless you too are already that day she had ex pressed this thought In other words Was some shadowy design flitting through her brain Suppose they were faced with the alternatives of dying from thirst or yielding to the Dyaks Was there another way out Jenks shivered though the took ins grilling him when a sharp exclamation from him caused her to hasten to his side The Dyaks had broken cover Running In scattered sections across the sands they were risking such loss as the defenders might be able to inflict upon them during a brief rues to the shelter and food to be obtained in the other part of the Island Jenks did not fire at the scurrying gang He was waiting for one man Taung SAlI But that redoubtable person having probably suggested this dash for liberty had fully realized the enviable share of attention he would attract during the passage He there fore discarded his vivid attire and by borrowing odd garments made himself sufficiently like unto the remainder of his crew to deceive the sailor until the rush of men was over Among them ran the Mohammedan who did not look Up the valley but waved his hand When all had quieted down again Jenks understood how he had been fooled He laughed so heartily that Iris not knowing either the cause of hIs merriment or the reason of his un looked for clemency to the flying toe feared the sun had affected him He at once quitted the post occupied during so protracted n vigil Now he cried we can eat in ponce I bare stripped the chief of his finery His men can twit him on being fore tt to shed his gorgeous plum age in order to save his life Anyhow they will leave us in peace until night falls so we must make the best of a hot of a not very lus dons repast Jenks suggested that they should rig up the tarpaulin in such wise as to gain protection from the sun and yet enable him to cast a watchful eyeover the valley Iris helped to raise the great canvas sheet on the supports he had prepared Once shut off from the devouring rays the hot breeze then springing into fitful existence cooled their blistered but per spiring skin and made life somewhat tolerableStill to his policy of com batting the first enervating attacks of thirst the sailor sanctioned the con sumption of the remaining water Asa lust desperate expedient to be resorted to only In case of sheer necessi ty he uncorked a bottle of champagne and filled the tin cup The sparkling wine with Its volume of creamy foam looked so tempting that Iris would then mind there have risked its potency were she not promptly withheld Jenks explained to her that when the wine became quite tInt amd insipid they might use Itfo moisten their parched lips Even so in their present super heated state the liquor was unquestionably dangerous but he hoped it mirIAccustomed now to implicitly accept his advice she fought and steadily conquered the craving within her Oddly enough the thawing of their scorched bodies beneath the tarpaulin brought a certain degree of relief They were supremely uncomfortable but that was ns naught compared with the relaxation from the torrents previously borne For a long time the best part of an hour perhaps they remained silent The sailor was reviewing the pros and cons of their precarious condition It would of course be a matter of su preme importance were the Indian to be faithful to his promise Here tho prospect WitS decidedly hopeful The man was an old soldier anti the ex officer of native cavalry knew how enduring was the point may be hqlpful It says among other things Ifsash curtains are used it Is usually a jgOod plan to bmJgthe long curtains so as to be the opposite of the sash cur tainsitlmt is if the sash curtains hang straight loop the long curtains and vice versa In this way the treatment will balance and a neutral effect be ob tained Bear In mind also In this connection that long cUrtains hanging straight reduce the width and increase the height of the window while cur tans looped or caught up with a rosette reduce the height and increase the Width Curtains reaching only to the sill or Just below it hare a tendency to short en the window axed if looped or draped thlseffect Is increased Sash curtains panels or any other style of glass curtains are hung with the right side of the goods to the glass unless the windows are so far re imoved from ordinary vision that it is iimposslble to discern the difference Long lace curtains are hung with the right side to the room where sash curtains are used to the reverse way when hung alone subject to the above proviso in reference to the difference being perceptible from without Lace curtains may be slurred on to the pole or rod by making a double hem at the the distance between the two stitchings being a little less than twice the diameter of the pole to allow for shrinkage Thus for a one inch pole which would measure loosely three and oneeighth inches in cir cumference you would require to allow about one and seveneighths inches between the shirtings making three and threequarter inches of a pocket for the hole to pass through Lace curtains hanging straight should lust clear the floor and to adjust this gootplanand then gently stretch them down this Mjlstan e 2jTo stretch them place an outspread jhand on each side of the curtain and pressing the two palms together stretch gently a little at a time work lug across the curtain from one side to the other until it is the required length Tails must be done very carefully and jif the curtain Is not found pliable mough to stretch the required dis tance pin it over again allowing it to be loner Xarrow windows in large rooms may be made to appear wider by matting the poles or cornice project at each side and plaiting the curtain to cover part of the wall at each side The pole or cornice should be placed high enough in tins case to entirely conceal the top jOf the wood trim but in cases where It Is advisable to show the wool trim at the it should be shown also at the- outside Frilled curtains made up as sash cur tains are very effective next to the glass but should be made of very soft material that will drape easily and gracefully Sash curtains lace cur rains or overcurtains should be plaited tb the exact width of the space they are to cover sufficient pins being used to dispose of all the fullness and hold the top edge of the curtain from sag ging between the pIns ThIs may seem d small thing but to those accustomed to neatness the sloppy droop of the top cage of a curtain from pin to pin Is extremely distasteful and would spoil an otherwise neat arrangement Mow to Clean Coral To cleats white coral soak it for some hours is cold rain water and then immerse JC
