the Decatur Review Was the Murder of Henry Shew makker at Lovington on Sat urday May 20 On Saturday evening May 20 at Tmngton I1L Fred B Britton who 4 formerly lived in Mercer county just over the line from Mackville shot Henry Shewmaker who left the Mack ville section about two years ago to reside in Illinois The Review published at Decatur Illinois says the shooting was without provocation The mur der was the coldest most deliberate piece of dirtywork ever known bymen who saw it U sayes the Review Shew maker had just declared in the pres ence of three hundred people that Charles Marsh the man who shot offi cer Moore in Sullivan Thursday was his best friend Britton stepped up and after cursing him drew a thirty two Smith Wesson revolver with which he shot three times The first bullet missed Shewmaker and hit a bystander Victor Goney about the left knee The next two took effect in Shewmaker Britton was immediately overpowered by Sheriff John H Wright Deputy Arthur Wright and States At torney Art W Lux H States Attorney Lux says of the shooting It was the most coldblooded murder I have ever heard of It was absolutely without provocation From The Decatur Review Henry Shewmaker died at 915 a m r Sunday May 21 at Lovington as are rsult of being shot by Fred Britton on the depot platform at that place Satur day The coronerof Mdifltrie county Dr E D Miller went from Sullivan and held an inquest The jury held Britton without bond to await the action of the grand jury Henry Shewmaker the victim of the shooting was twentyfive old He was born at Mackville WaShingtonI county Ky and his Mrs Uriah Shewmaker still reside at that place He came to Macon count- ya little over two years ago and had worked at different places as a laborer and farm hand Recently he had been employed as a coal miner at Lovington He leaves a brother Peter Shewmaker and a sister Mrs David Pinkston both of near Blue Mound and also several brothers and sisters in Kentucky be sides the aged parents Brittons story of theshoo ting is quite different from that of the bystanders He claims self defense and says that while he regrets the unfortunate affair it was unavoidable on his part as Shewmaker had his hand in his hip pocket and that he believed his life vas in danger when he fired the shot An examination of the dead mans clothes failed to reveal a weapon of any description was the guest of his cousin Mr Herbert Harmon of Enido Saturday night and Sunday The condolence of the entire community is extended to the relatives of the late JamesMotherly He leaves a wife Jr and thre E1 and two daughters Mr Matherly was a consistent member of the Baptist church a kind father and had many friends Another Victory For Springfield Graded The Springfield School team went to Bardstown last Friday to play the Bardstown school team The home doingIninth inning the score card recorded an errorless game for the Springfieldag gregation The Crawfordites were unable to hit either Colvin or Waters the Springfield slabmen while Hibbs and Lewis the Bardstown box artists were easy for the home teams batsmen It was a regular oldtime swatting bee on the part of the Springfieldites who during the nine innings piled up 28 runs but the thermometer was at zero all the way through for Bardstown Before returning home the Springfield boys were delightfully entertained through courtesy of Professor Crawford at his annual matricula where beauti ful music and more beautiful girls lent an extra charm to the occasion and a general good time was enjoyed by all RUSSIA S- SHIPS Wiped From the Bosom of the Blowly a Bloody War In the great naval battle fought Sat urday and Sunday in the Straits Sf Korea the Japanese obtained a com plete and overwhelming victory Late advices show that Rpjestvenskys fleet composed of all his most effective and powerful ships was completely shat tered According to the latest infor mation two Russian battleships one coastdefense armorclad five cruisers two specialservice ships and three destroyers were sunk and there were captured two battleships two coast = defense armorclads and one spcial service ship- Rojestvenekys flagship escaped badly damaged and with other vessels of his broken fleet is being pursued by the victorious Japanese Rear AdmialNe bogatoff however was captured with 3000 other prisoners It seems probable that in their crippled condition other Russian vessels will fall into the hands of the Japanese before they can reach Vladivostok While London rumors say that several Japanese vessels were lost Admiral Tog officially reports that his squadron was not damaged A number of Rus sian vessels still remain near Shanghai but ii is evident that as a fighting force the great fleet has been destroyed No details of the battle have yet been permitted to pass the Japanese tensor but Tokio dispatches make clear that Admiral Togo is pressing his advantage and harassing the Russian vessels which are attempting to Discussed at Lexington Last Week By Committee Harrodsburg Herald A The delegates from the counties in the white burley tobacco district who met in Lexington Tuesday to receive the plans devised by the committee from the Burley Tobacco Growers Company looking to the financing of the company this year to secure control of the tobacco held a session in the afternoon and at night The committee appointed last March by the boardof directors of the company composed of Archibald Stuart of Cincinnati W C McChbrd of Springfield and Leonard Drane of Eminence with Wj B Hawkins as chairman met with the dele- gateS arid presented the plan but at the night meeting this plan was changed materially by the convention and will not be accepted until President Hawkins has conferred with Mr Stuart who had left for his home late in the afternoon President Hawkins stated that it was the object of the company to issue onehalf millions of dollars worh of stock half common and half preferred and allow every grower in the district tosubscribe for- 1000 worth of the preferred stock which would give the company suffittent capital on which to secure good finan He said that every mem 1ber delegates present readily agreed to this plan and gave his personal check for the amount and these delegates will begin at once to get the growers in their district to sub scribe for the stock President Haw kins said it would be known by the first of July whether or not the deal would be a success this year and that all contracts would be signed releasing the grower the first of November if the company the Grim Reaper Sealed the Eyelids of Some of the Most Honored and Loved Citizens of the County t Mr David Ii Payne died at his home on the Bardstown pike about six miles from town last Friday May 26 after a brief illness of pneumonia He had just recovered from a very severe attack of typhoid fever when the con tracted a severe cold wnich resulted in typhoidpneumonia There was not a- more substantial citizen in the county than the deceased upright charitable genteel he was admired and honored by hundreds of his acquantances The deceased was bora August 10 1850 and had spent the greater part of his life in Marion county However he had been a citizen of this county for quite a while and had made hundreds of friends who learned of his death with much sorrow Mr Payne was a loyal member of theMasonic order and his burial on last Saturday was con ducted by the Masons the bo having been buried in the ceJtetery at this place The deceased leaves a wife and eight children to mown the death 9fa devoted husband and father to whom a host of friends extend condolence Funeral services were conducted by Rev Purdom of the Baptist church On last Saturday morning Mr Stephen T Wheatley one of the best known and most highly honored citizens of the county died at his home near town of general debility aged eighty five years Mr Wheatley had been in declining health for a number ofmonths and his death had been expected for several days The deceased was born ond reared in this county having spent the last forty years of his life on the farm where he died He was wetf known by nearly all of the older citizens of the county and was generally liked Mr Wheatley was a devout member of the St Rose Catholic church funeralservices having occurred there Sunday morning at9 oclock interment taking place in the St Rose cemetery The deceased was chari table and kind a good neighbor a loving parent and a devoutly religious gentleman To those who are bereaved The Sun together with a host Of friends extends condolence Mr A W Breckenridge a well known jcitizen of the Willisburg community died at his home near that place on last Sunday May 28 of the infirmities of old ageuUnc1e Dick was seventyfive years of age and had been a resident of the section in which he died for fifty years He carried the mail between this place and Willisburg for a number of years and is remem bered by the older citizens of the county as a man of fine character Honest and upright in all dealings with his fellowman he made a host of friends who will learn with regret of his death Mr Breckenridge was a descendant of the celebrated Kentucky family by that name which gave to America some of her foremost states men After funeral services his remains were laid to rest in the Fairview cemetery H Marion and Corn and Alfalfa Special Anderson News While in attendance at the meeting ofthe Farmers jClub last Saturday Commissioner of Agriculture Vreeland said that he is arranging to run a special train over all of the state bearing with it an exhibit of corn and alfalfa clover the object b ing to increase the interest in these two crops and to give instruction in the best methods of cultivation The tram will be accom panied by the ablest agriculturalspeak ers to be found in the country and lec tures will b delivered at each stopping place It is said that the running of such a train through Iowa increased the value of the corn crop of that state cheap labor and that we would not per mit him to retard our progress in the pursuit of peace and happiness His exclusion was both wise arid timely In Winchester asking for a change of venue in the cases of Moses Feltner Sam Fields and Sam Jett Judge Rid del transferred Feltners case to Es till county and those ofJett and Fields to Tee county This action on the part of Judge Riddell will do away with the sending of troops to Jackson to protect Feltner andsJett With the transfer of these cases the scene of action in the HargisCockrill feud will again be transferred to Winchester where on Monday the con tempt proceedings against James and Alex Hargis Ed Callahan and B F French in connection with the Mar cum damage suit will be tried At torney
