Enormous Contract Richmond Firm at Work on Four Million Dollar Job A special from New York to the Loulavllle Times says That In all big enterprises Kentuckians are in evidence is shown in the construction f the mammoth Catskill aqueduct to furnish the water supply for Greater sew York which rivals tbe Panama canal asa stupendous engineering projectThd contracting firm of the Mason Hanger Co of Richmond Ky was the successful bidder and secured the section of the work just east of the Hudson river and con necting with the section which is under the Hudson river one of the most difficult pieces of the great work The firm went at the work with a vim and dash and Is well up with its contract Included in the contract awarded this company Is the building ofan aqueduct under the town of Cornwall ontheHudson andold Cornwall which is about six miles in lengthand will cost about 14000000 The mug nitude of this undertaking can be realized when it is understood that seven shafts must be sunk varying from 300 to 500 feet in depth for the purpose of installing the necessary machinery in the aqueduct below and for the ingress and egress of the men at work and for the purpose of an outlet for the earth removed in making the excavations The Mason Hanger Co is composed of experienced contractor who performed much of the work of constructing the Chicago drainage canal the canal at Sault Ste Marie Mich connecting Lake Superior and Lake Michigan the aqueduct completed about two years ago for the city of Philadelphia to supply it with water the waterworks at Cincinnati and some of the principal tunnels in this section of the United States and manymiles of for the leading railroads in Pennsylvania Kentucky Virginia West Virginia Alabama and other Southern States The presi dent this Kentucky company on its merits and the record it had made sad in a 94 000000 contract it was oay4700u- nder one of the leading contractors of New York City The new Catskill aqueduct which when completed will in a measure supplant the old Cro on aqueduct which bus supplied New York with its supply for two generations Is being constructed from the Catskill moun talus to convey the water from an immense reservoir to the city It will be seventeen feet in diameter with a concrete lining and the esti mated cost on completion is about flCOOOOOOO The aqueduct will be built circular in shape nod syphon fashion and will go about 500 feet under tbe Hudson river and then rise ngaintbe arrangement being for the How of water by gravity from the reservoir on tho tup of the Catskill mountains to the city The construction work is being let in sections and 140000000 worth of contract have already been let no contractor being permitted to have more than ono section The new aqueduct will bring the water from an area of over 600 square miles a distance of nintytwo miles to the metropolis of America When completed it will be the largest waterworks system in the world and one of the greatest feats
