of Be late Hen John Bennett and Pays the Dc ceareJ a hUgh Tribute EDITOR CLIMAX No one can read the tributes paid to the late John Bennett in recent issues of the Richmond CUUAX without being deeply impressed with the estimate in which he was held at his own home but I cannot rob my soul of the desire to add my tribute to the man with whom I had business contact for nearly thirty years in various relations- I can feelingly illustrate the man in a recital of an incident which made a deep impression He was a stockhold er in the old Second National Bank of Louisville which as you kiowin IBM was liquidated The assets remaining after its debts were paid were used to make a subscription to the stock of the new American National Bank It was thought that the remaining assets would justify subscription of 150000 and the assets were placed with the American National Bank for collection In this they were mistaken for those assets were not worth more that 100 000 hence they lacked 50000 of paying it Each stockholder however had re ceived stock in the American National Bank full up as if they had paid the 150000 After a year or two it became apparent thot the assets did not justify having issuea slock for that amountand the stockholders of the Second National Bank were asked to return say 33 per cent of their American National Bank stock and have it reduced in accord ance with the value of the Second Na tional Banks assets thereby liquidating the debt which each individual stockholder of the Second National Bank wed This plan was submitted to several stockholders some of whom doubted very much whether or not out of about two hundred stockholders of the Second National Bank there would not be a majority who would protest and claim that they should not bo re quired to return it In those days of uncertainty as to what would be the result of the plan Mr Bennett came into my office I put to him a hypothetical case and asked him what be thought a man ought to do to be just In the case Then I applied it and said Well you are Gne of the men who has in your box fifty shares of American National Bank stock which you have not paid for by onethird His prompt answer was Well you can have mine I do not want it if it is not pail for take it and reduce it onethird and give me what belongs to me Jt was soon done the plan was a sue cees and I want to say that the promptness with which he accepted the plan asa just one encouraged me more than any other man He believed that the beIsuccess and the Second National Bank debt was liquidated and the stock holders have seen the wisdom of this planand to no one am Ilndcbted more and like a flash his integrity showed forth and all connected with this en terprise have been benefited by the vigor of Lila honesty one of time most delightful entertainments ever given in Richmond Tuesday was Class Day and was conducted by the seniors nine in num ber in a highly entertaining manner Miss Stella Lewis President of the class made a beautiful little address of welcome followed by the Historian Miss Edith Searcy with her history of time class Miss Eyaline White the Prophet with her prophecies concerning her classmutes Miss Cricket Tenill the Giftoriau with her gifts lo each member Miss Mary Lee Col yet the Grumbler with her com plaints Miss Tommy West on The Faculty with her jokes on the teachers Miss Myra Walker with her grnrelul little speech at the planting of the ivy and Miss Martha White the Valedictorian with her sad farewell These exercises wore interspersed with selections by the Institute orchestra which has developed wonderfully un der time leadership of Prof Meiler and now makes such excellent music that it compares lavorably with many profes sional orchestras On Thursday Commencement Day the Christian Church was filled to over flowing with people to hear time address of Mr R E Moss of Maysville and to see the graduates receive their dlplo miss While the orchestra played a march the nine graduates preceeded by President McGarvey and Mr Moss and accompanied by nine young men of Richmond who were the ushers for the occasion marched in and took their places on the platform After prayer by Dr Dodge of the First Presbyterian church Mr Moss In his mu sical voice and graceful manner delivered a very appropriate and most eloquent address which many of the audIenc pronounced the best commencement oration they ever heard President McGarvey after a few appro- prIate remarks to the people assembled presented the diplomas to the graduates and spoke a few parting words to his former pupils who had successfully finished their college course After a musical selection by thu orchestra and announcements for next year by the President the benediction was pro nounced by Mr Moss This ended one of the most success ful school years in the history of Madison Institute President McGarvey announced that the prospects for next session are very encouraging and called the attention of the people that their local pride should prompt them to standby Madison Institute as it is their school and give it their friendship and hearty support and thus help him to make it even better than it has been The President says that ho has not spared pains or money in the selection of his faculty for next year and that it will be even stronger than that of the year just Pays the De ceased a High Tribute EDITOR CLIMAX No one can read the tributes paid to the late John Bennett in recent issues of time Richmond CLIMAX without being deeply impressed with the estimate in which ho was held at his own home but J cannot rob my soul of the desire to add my tribute to the man with whom I had business contact for nearly thirty years in various relations- I can feelingly illustrate the man in a recital of an incident which made a deep impression Ho was a stockhold er in the old Second National Bank of Louisville which as you kiowin 1894 was liquidated Time assets remaining after ita debts were paid were used to make a subscription to the stock of the new American National Bank It was thought that the remaining assets would justify subscription of 150000 and the assets were placed with the American National Bank for collection In this they were mistaken for Ithose assets were 1Iot worth more that 100 000 hence they Jacked 60000 of pay inc it Each stockholder howoverhad re ceived stock in the American National Bank full up as if they had paid the 150000 After a year or two it became apparent that time assets did not justify having issued stock for that auiountand the stockholders of tho Second National Bank were asked to return say 33 per cent of their American National Bank stock and have it reduced in accord ance with the value oi the Second Na tional Banks assets thereby liquidat hug the debt which each individual stockholder of the Second National Bank wed This plan was submitted to several stockholders some of whom doubted very much whether or not out of about two hundred stockholders of the Second National Bank there would not be a majority who would protest and claim that they should not be re quired to roturnit In those days of uncertainty as to what would be the result of the plan Mr Bennett came into my office I put to him a hypothetical case and asked him what he thpught a man ought to do to be just In the case Then I applied it and said Well yon are one of the men who has in your box fifty shares of American National Bank stock which yon have not paid for by onethird His prompt answer was Well you can have mine I do not want it if it is not paid for take it and reduce it onethird and give me what belongs to me It was soon done the plan was a success and I want to say that the prompt ness with which he accepted time plan as a just one encouraged me more than any other man He believed that the great majority of stockholders could be induced to dd this just act It was a success and the Second National Bank debt was liquidated and tho stock holders have seen the wisdom of this planand to no One am I indebted more and like a flash bis integrity showed forth and all connected with this en terprlso have been benefited by the vigor of his honesty quickly expressed and the prosperitj which followed the American National Bank dates from almost that day It is not necessary to say more than the
