human nature to look out for hunjber one awl probably in no feature of existence is this theory more earnestly applied than to affairs involv ing financial considerations In the matter of trading how ever people are oftentimes deceived into buying goods in large cities to the detriment of their own town when as a matter of fact they could not only actually get cheaper prices at home but would also by patronizing their local merchants assist in holding the money Circulation in their community up to a higher standard This is particularly the case with people within the natur al trading radius of Richmond A little inspection and com parison of prices will convince any buyerthat our merchants actually undersell Lexington houses in many staple lines and a buyer must indeed fastidiously inclined the charters to he obtained it is expected that William Tl Baldwin Jr will be placed at its heal Mr Baldwin has been active in munici pal reform work while he has been president of the Long Island railroad lIe has been devoting much thought and study to the question of educational work in the south and has been prominent member of the executive board of the Southern Educational conference of which Hubert C Ogden is the chairman The great educntionnl organization will be in some measure a result of the investigations made by the South ern Educational conference For sev era years men of menus have been in duced to join in the conference over plans for improving educational facili ties in the south It lias been made plain at such conferences that the south was too poor to provide for its people both white and black as good schools as were needed Several of the men concerned in the Southern Edit rational conference have been inter ested in the work lone under the su pervision of the boards of trustees controlling the funds for education in the south provided by the late George Pea body anti the late John Fox Pcabody UNDER SEA TO POLE Dr flintzKneinpfe In Aclnnlly- 1rcpnrlni a depth of 00 feet which is sufficient to clear ice in coldest regions He will go as far north as possible in an ordinary arctic vessel then with his submarine boat he hopes to reach the pole in four be made one in reed doctrine antI ceremonial The former plan however he considers feasible anti he presented in his ser mon a bais on which he thought it could be accomplished- At no time has there been such a yearning for a united Christendom as today The reformation of the Twen tieth Centuryif we live to see it will be based on the sanctification of rollcctiveism and one of its dominant features will be unity of churches First of all we must do away with the competition between churches Tf there is anything destructive to spir itual life it is such competition It removes the central the canine teeth in the lower jaw bifoiinte the giraffe being the only Other known animal to have this peculiarity The extinct hel ladotherium with which the okapi was originally compared differed too much to justify placing them in the same genus though doubtless they were nearly related It was scarcely possible to decide whether the okapi was primitive in be- Ing hornless or whether its ancestors
