counties composing tIme southeast ern section where little attention ismgiven to wheat growing The average condition for the western section is 10t for the central 102 The improvement is most marked in those counties re porting an average or belowaverage condition last month Very low of timeD counties where the condition phenomenally high in last report show an increase in condition The earliest wheat is generally in fested with fly the damage in somo in s tames amounting to total loss This however will have little effect on acreage as resowtng has been the rule lis estimated that 13 per cent of time acreage in the central sections is dam aged by fly or other insects while in the western section but 8 per cent of the aceraga is affected The growth of the plant where free from insect pests counties WhEAt Time favorable weather of November has advanced the condition of wheat 97 on November 1 to 101 on December I These estimates are exclusive cf the counties composing time southeast ern section where little attention is iven to wheat growing The average for the western section is 10t for the central 102 The improvementr is most marked in counties re porting an average or below average condition last month Very fewof the counties where the condition was phenomenally hugh in last report show an increase in condition The earliest wheat is generally infested with fly the damige in some install amounting to total loss This however will have little effect on acreage as resowing has been the rule H is estimated that 13 per cent of the acreage in the central sections is dam aged by fly or other insects while In the western section but 8 per cent of the acerage is affected The growth of the plant where free from insect pests is very rank anti razIng ia being generally resorted to to prevent it reaching a stage where lam ago by freezing is likely to result In summing up the prospects we feel justified in saying that notbwithstand i np time injury from insects the State has seldom presented in one crop so many condition which presage a large yield The acreage is considerably above an average tho plant is well rooted and prepared to withstand the vicissitudes of the PHYSICIANS ON THE HUMAN APPENDIX Ncj York 8a41 acute appendicitis was advanced more than by all previous knowledge combined by McBurney when in 1889 he discovered and established the value of Introdoctiotlland to diagnose clearly and positively every case of chronic and nearly every case of acute appendicitis- Although there has been a belief that men were more subject to the disease than women in a succession of 18000 autopsies appendicitis was found in 57 per cent of the females and 55 per cent of the males and in lJ8 an topsles reported by another man evidences of past appendicitis were found in 6ft per cent of me women andi 56 per cent of the men In 300 autopsies 190 uormal appendices were found all the others showing evidences of ease Edebohls finds clinically that 4 per cent of all women have appendicitis The appendix averages a half inch longer in women than in men several hundred autopsies have Hhown as high a proportion of cases as above 21 per cent where the appendix is obliterated There is only one well authenticated case oi congenial absence of the appendix Odd reason for the happiness of the ancients seem to ap pear in the statement that the very ex istence of the appendix does not seem to have been recognized prior to the sixteenth century There is one genuine record of leftpided appendicitisbut it was the case of a soldier whose hodyI showed other transposition The first operation for appendicitis so far as the records show was in 1759 That was fur the purpose of draining an abccss not for the removal of the appendix The inauguration of the modern surgical treatment of append cular abcenses did not come until 18671 Dr Edebohls says and mat led to thej surgery of the appendix itself as it is now practised The doctor et 11IiuueIThe first recorded operation appendix itself was planned by lr Ma homed and executed on AtigUtt 241883 by Symonds Mahomed diagnosticat ed a stone in the appendix Symon removed the stone threefourths b one halt inch In size and clostd the opening of the appendix The patient ratovered and was cured of all his symplons In connection with thisi case Symonds becomes prophetic in relation to the future removal of the appendix in similar cases I have found but till other instances ofI eration upon the appendix stopping short of its removal Kroenlien on February 14 1881 performed the first removal of the appendix for acute ap pendicitis Other doctors followed Dr Ede bohls remarks that these early appendi cectomles bad in common one disi couragingfeatnrp All of them were fatal The first successful removal of the appendix was performed on May 8 1886 and thereafter Dr Edebohls says removal of the appendix in acute appendicitis rapidly became a recog nized and oftundertaken procedure As early as 1889 McBurney reported seyen appendicectomies of his own with six recoveries and one dea h Since that time scores of operators number their appendicectomies for acute appendicitis by the hundreds Since 1800 the large majorities of soy geons with a name advocate removal of tile appendix in acute appendicitis as the routine procedure always to bn attempted save under most exceptional conditions In direct opposition to the modern tendency to remove the ap pendix whenever feasible and vainly attempting to stem the tide we find Dr J M Barton of Philadelphia as late as 1894 and a few others even more re cently preaching the doctrine of leav ing the appendix in operation for acute appendicitis claiming better results from this practice That this claim does not hold eood in the work of better operators goes without saying It AFTKK reading Bob Breckinridges statement upon the decision of the Commissioners we are prouder than ever that we supported this Grand Old Man Judge Breokinrhlge in epeakii aboutfthe recent finding of the Election Commission said that he was not surprised at the result trot on the other hand had expected it for several lays before it came He said that the Com missioners had no power to do other than give the certificates to the Repub licans though they were convinced that gross fraud had been practiced at the polls When asked if contests would be made he
