Good people who have exercised the in de worthy virture of cliuiug the beneficial grape as an article of diet in its natural state, 60 as not to endanger their vermiform ap pendices, may find provocation to the unbecoming act known sometimes as kicking one's self when they read of the number of bodies other than grape seeds which "nave heen found in these bothersome saes. Dr. Edebohls mentions a grain of oat a fin of a fish, a fruit stone, a chocolate nut, melon seeds, fherry stones, prune stones, raspberry seeds, a date seed, orange seeds, tomato seeds, a bean. Even medicines may jtoawry in that survival, if it be a survival, of some state wherein A gelatine it could be serviceable. capsule is included in the list of foreign contents of that magazine. There is a reminder for boarders in the list, too", for, althougn butter isn't mentioned, hair is recorded as having been found there. Huckleberry and ,bluokberry seeds, a piece of the shell ot a hazel nut, peanuts, a piece of chestnut, a bristle, a glazier's point of zinc, a globue of solder, a piece of bone a cartridge, a piece ol a screw and a knot of a heavy silk ligature that had been used in some tibdominal surgery ar also in the list, which takes it also entozoa and coproliths; entozoa is thete Ascandes lumbricoides. varieties; Oxyurls vermicularis and Tricocepha lus dispar. Next to coproliths, Dr Edebohls says, pins have been the foreign bodies must frequently met, a statement which without intputioual slight to the coproliths it may be said furnishes a mute approval of the uni-eiobjections to mothers to the infantile tendency to gobble pins, and possibly a warning to mothers ai.d others who utilize the mouth in lieu o a uiu cushion. This list, according to the confronting assurance of Dr. Edebohls. is by tin means a complete one. It used to bethought that these foreign bodies were the cause of appendicitis. But Dr. Edebohls says that in the light ol modern views the permanent lodgement ot foreign bodies in the appendix is probably more frequently the result than the cause of appendicitis. The causative factors in the produi-tio- n of the disease, he says, are universally admitted by all writers to be very generally local in character. Attentiut has been called to an analogy between quinsy and appendicitis; heredity as a cause and "family appendicitis" have been spoken of. Baeteria play an im portant part in causing the disease. Gouty appendicitis has been described Rheumatism has been pnt down as cause. One man finds the chief caubt-ithe action of the psoas lnucle, and one calls appendicitis an epidemic infectious disease. Some New York physicians assert the grippe is a frequent cause of attack of appendicitis Then besides inflammatory appendicitis theie are other pathological conditions ol the appendix; among them tuberculosis and cancer of the appendix. Bacteria thrive with such success in the sac that it has been called a cdlture investigation tube. Bacteriological has shown m practically every case, appendicitis to be due, Dr. Edebohls says, to bacterial invasion ol the appendix walls. The germs may get into the tissue of the appendix by means of the blood. There is a report of an observation of the passage of the bacterium from an appendix ahces through the intact wall of a neighbor ing organ, so that it would almost seem that the menace of the appendix and the ill appertaining to it were relentless as fate. Records of appendicitis, although not by that name, which the doctor says is a barbarism, go back to 1042. The early ones for more than, a hundred years only describe a condition now described as appendicitis. The first recognition of appendicitis as a distinct disease was in 1759. but even down to 1838 knowledge of the existence of the disease was by no means general. lit 1847 the diagnosis of appendicitis began to be made. The bacteriology of the ''disease was not studied until 1891. Dr. Edebohls says: "The diagnosis of (Continued next week.) u!
