The causative factors in the produi-tio- n of the disease, he says, are universally admitted by all writers to be very generally local in character. Attentiut has been called to an analogy between quinsy and appendicitis; heredity as a cause and "family appendicitis" have been spoken of. Baeteria play an im portant part in causing the disease. Gouty appendicitis has been described Rheumatism has been pnt down as cause. One man finds the chief caubt-ithe action of the psoas lnucle, and one calls appendicitis an epidemic infectious disease. Some New York physicians assert the grippe is a frequent cause of attack of appendicitis Then besides inflammatory appendicitis theie are other pathological conditions ol the appendix; among them tuberculosis and cancer of the appendix. Bacteria thrive with such success in the sac that it has been called a cdlture investigation tube. Bacteriological has shown m practically every case, appendicitis to be due, Dr. Edebohls says, to bacterial invasion ol the appendix walls. The germs may get into the tissue of the appendix by means of the blood. There is a report of an observation of the passage of the bacterium from an appendix ahces through the intact wall of a neighbor ing organ, so that it would almost seem that the menace of the appendix and the ill appertaining to it were relentless as fate. Records of appendicitis, although not by that name, which the doctor says is a barbarism, go back to 1042. The early ones for more than, a hundred years only describe a condition now described as appendicitis. The first recognition of appendicitis as a distinct disease was in 1759. but even down to 1838 knowledge of the existence of the disease was by no means general. lit 1847 the diagnosis of appendicitis began to be made.
