GOLDEN WEDDING 1899. 1849-HAR- death. RIS Dr. Goldstein, The following article appeared in Monday's Lexington Herald, contribu ted by somo unknown friend, and while it is very readable we feel satis- fled it hardly does justice to the grand occasion. We regret we cannot give an original account of the celebration but as we were "insufficiently urged" this article must suffice: The golden weddingon September 20, of Hon. and Mrs. John D. Harris was perhaps the most enjoyable gathering in the history of Madison county. Numberless lights swung on the lawn from bright moon-beam- s werti made softer by their lustre. The guests, borne by chartered train, were greeted by de lightful music from Saxtou's band, wafted through tho whispering leaves of the pine wood. Historic old BIy the-ood was purchased by Maj. John D. Harris from Col, Joseph C. Anderson, and thereby has rested in the same family for over a century, which has spared no Urns nor Means to render it most beautiful. The grand old house, ith its long porches was decorated ith ferns, palms, roses and lengthy silken sprays of goldeurod. The bride and croom, nsslsled by their daughters and husbands. Auditor and Mrs. Sam H. Stone and Hon. and Mrs. Cassius M Clay, Jr., received the same parlor where they were married fifty years ago The bride looked most lovely in her gown of black velvet and whito lace, holding m her hand her old wedding bonnet holder, filled with bride roses and lilies of the alley. The groom, in his suit of broad cloth, was handsome indeed No one would take them to be over fiftv. 'The bridematds were most band- some, robed in their elegant wedding gowns and carrying loose bunches ol pink roses. Rack of tho bridal party hung a large monogram H. W.of white and gold loses, and on either side were in flowers of gold, the dates lSlO-lSwhile among other designs were ''two hearts that heat as one." There were present ltlaiiy guests from a distance. Eight present were at the marriage ceremony fifty years ago. In other words, Win. Goebel, Democratic candi dato for Governor, looked into the faces of a greater multitude of people on Monday than ever greeted a candidate here before. From tho froot walls oi the Main strcot buildings clear up to tho court- - houso doors, a distance of 200 feet, and from First to Second stieets, humanity &tood in one solid mass for nearly two hours. Besides this the court house yard shado trees were burdened with spectators and the windows and doors of the bank buildings andjstores facing the public square, were crowded with ladies, attentivo listeners to the next Governor of Kentucky. Indeed, had Bryan himself been here or should he como during this campaign, we could not ask for a grander outpouring of the citizens of Madison county than tho assemblage that greeted Mr. Goebel on Monday. To the straight Democrats the size of the crowd was but proof incontestible that the Democracy of Madison is e and iu line; to Republicans it was a stupendous surprise, acgrava-tln- g no doubt, discouraging certainly; to the Brown's Iron Bitters Brigade it was like "the blow thatkilled grandpa!" At one o'clock when the train arrived from Covington tho committee on reception, headed by the Richmond Band in full uniform, and a number of mounted escorts, met Mr. Goebel at the depot. He entered a carriage with Gov. McCreary, Jno. B. Chenault and Graham Vreoland, of Louisville. In tho next carriage were lions. R. H Crooke, W. B, Smith, J. This etyle of magnifying the unfortunate event in Mr. Goebel's career.for which he was cleared, whs tidicu.ous, as it was too palpably demagogic Mr Feland occupied . but little time with live issues and merely skimmed over Slate questions except the Goebel Law--, and the Election Commission from whose decision, lie said, there was no appeal, which is a misrepresentation of facts. . He practically admitted tho L. & N. It. It. was behind the Drown movement, although such statement was superfluous. He condemned the I tail road Commission and dealt in a lot of pure buncombe about the blessings of railroads, whose legitimate opera ion no sensible man opposes. He stated that Democrats had failed to itemize their general charges of mismanagement of State affairs, this in the face of the notorious scandals that have been unearthed by Inspector Lester, and Governor Dradley's dismissals of Re publican ollicials for negligence, inef ficiency and corruption. Mr. Feland bimply addressed him self to the ignorant and not to the in telligent portion of his audience in most of his speech. At the same time it was amusing to observe his effort to stir up the negroes and ingratiate him self with tho Confederate soldiers, the latier by eulogizing the heroism of one of their number. Never before in a campaign in Kentucky has a Itepubli can praised the valor of the boys in grey, but always waved the bloody shiit, rousing the .negroes to an insane frenzy by stories of Northern sacrifices to secure their freedom and their votet! Mr. Feland first patted the negro then the Confederate on the shoulder, to the disgust of all who had sense enough to cce through his game. His assault on the Chinn School Book bill was simply a lame defense of the present extortion of20"),000 per year from the pockets of parents of pupils of our public schools. The speech was the pleasantest but withal the most harmless piece of campaign ammuni tion that was ever touched off here, Mr. Feland evidently likes Madison as he had such a hilarious time with the boys he didn't get away until Thurs day, although he wasn't making speeches in the Interim!
