date on which the largest crowd ever gathered in Richmond to listen to a candidate for office within the gift of the people of Kentucky In other wonis Win Goebel Democratic candi date for Governor looked into the faces Ifa greater multitude of people on Monday than ever greeted candidate here before From the front walls of the Main street buildings clear up to the court house doors a distance of 200 feet and from First to Second Btieetf humanity stood in one solid mass for nearly two hours Besides this the court house yard shade trees were burdened with spectators and the windows and doors of the bank build ings nndfStoresfacing the public square were crowded with ladies attentlvoI listeners to the next Governor tucky Indeed had Bryan himself been here or should he come during this campaign we could not ask for a grander outpouring of the citizens of Madison county than the assemblage that greeted Mr Goebel on Monday To the straight Democrats the size of the crowd was but proof incontestible that the Democracy of Madison is wideawake and in line Republicans it was a stupendous surprise aggrava ting no doubt discouraging certainly to the Browns Iron Bitters Brigade it was like tho blow that killed grandpa- At one oclock when the train arrived from Coyington the committee on re ception headed by the Richmond Band in full uniform and a number of mounted escorts met Mr Goebel at the depot He entered a carriage with Gov McCreary Jno B Chenault and Graham Vreoland of Louisville In the next carriage were Hons H H Crooke W B Smith J Tevis Cobb and Richard Clark of Cuvington Two bus loads of people and several carriages followed In one carriage were five wellknown colored Goebel supporters The procession led by the band slow ly made its way through tho densely crowded Streets the cheering of the spectators compelling Mr Goebel to doff his hat all atom the route There were from fonr to six thousand spectators within the space lacing and flanking court rquare and despite this fact all these heard the speaker with reasonable distinctness for the closest attention was given him As a further evidence of the interest mani tested in the candidate and the race Mr Goebel consented to remain over and address the merchants and others of the court day crowd who could not hear him in the afternoon Accord ingly at 730 the court house was so crowded with spectators of Loth sexes that tile committee in charge of Mr Goebel could scarcely force a way through the side aisles There were over one hundred ladies In the audience a count having been made some time before the speaker arrived Mr Goebel in the afternoon discus sed the L N K Rs activity in the campaign its discrimination in freight rates and its hostility to lila ciuvae with reasons for his reciprocation of the roads disesteem lie discussed the trust question and showed that al though John Shermsm hind had passed an antitrust measure not a single trust had the Republicans suppressed under that law He exposed the record of that party in this State on the trust question whereby every Republican member of the Legislature with one possible exception voted against the Bradburn AntiTrust Bill The same record of dodging and inconsistency stares the Republicans in the face on the subject of the school book trust Ho explained the vote of that party on the grounds that tho American School- Book Trust and other such monopolies were large contributors to the Republican campaign fuud He discussed the AlcCord Railroad Bill a similar law being In force in twenty states and that in Nebraska Mr Bryan was the voluntary attorney In support of it before the Supreme Court which upheld Its constitutionality He Is in favor of the Separate Coach Law but would enforce that part com pelling railroads to provide equal ac com nodations for the colored passen gers who pay full fare and are entitled to the same treatmentgivin the whites He declared that Attorney General Taylor had never done anything to enforce this part of the law The loss of Kentucky in 90 ho declared was due to the immense corrupt ion fund of Hanna Co to the with holding of returns in the 11th District and to the failure of ea Republican connty judge to give Bryan a single officer In forty Jefferson county precincts He declared that John Young Brown was the only man who ever backed another for a nomination and then ran against him He said that the Louisville Conven tion was called to nominate a Demo cratic ticket and that while Mr Hiirdin went there to get the nomination and Mr Stone went there to get the nomi nation it was a mistake to suppose that ho Geebel went there solely for amusementAs currency question lie cIo dared that this State would send a delegation For 16 to 1 and Bryan
