Oct 16 and Winchester Oct 23 AT tire Republican headquarters in this city eight copies of the Lexington Herald are received daily and take their place where they belong with other Republican literature 4 THE best way to fight Republicans is with a cluba strong Democratic club such as will bo organized here tomorrow night Come out and hear the speeches and jino the club TUB best recommendation that a man can get is that which his past record gives him Judge a candidate not by what he intends to do butby that which he has done- Because a negro wrote the above doea not diminish its truth or importance It is from the hue Grass JIngle of Frankfort edited by colored men THE Louisville Commercial must be jealous ot the Lexington Herald be causu tire latter while posing as an in dependent Democratic paper is in greater demand at Republican head quarters than the Commercial itself It appears that spies traitors and in grates still have standing in this country THE Election Commission at Frank fort has about concluded its labors of appointing new boards in tire various counties Madisons now board consists of Messrs Jno B Chenault and Josiah P Simmons Democrats and Mr Waller Bennett Republican Mr Langford anti Mr Clay on the old board were not reappointed We sin cerely hope that the new board will be as harmonious and give as great satis faction ni the old one CAXIHDATK Taylor was cornered at Crtllioun and forced to answer how he stood on the separate conch Law etc Mr Taylor appeared to be very much otfeuded at the questions and replied in an irritated way that he would not answer any questions prepared by these agents running around in Goebels Interest Lei Goebel meet me face to face and ask them he said and I will answer thcm Later in his speech however ho referred to the questions again and said that he was opposed to the separate couch law The must remarkable statement made by Mr Taylor however was the followingI assurance that every bolting Democrat is sending up a prayer that- I may be elected Governor WE hear it said that under the Goebel election law there is no right of ap peal to the courts This charge if un answered leads a fairminded man to the conclusion that something is vitally wrong in the law But tins is a mis representation and we call Republican attention to the fact because that party is most studiously disseminating the contrary as a fact The truth is the Court of Appeals has decided that the right of appeal re mains unaffected in every case in which that right existed under the old election law Another gross misrepresentation is the claim that no penalty for offenses committed by election officers exists under this law But SECTION 16 says All act and parts of acts in conflict with this act are to the extent of such conflict repealed Then all parts of the old aw not in conflict with the new law are yet in effect and the Court of Appeals basso decided declaring that the same penalties embraced In the old law are in effect under the new The Republican newspapers condemn and misrepresent tire law but no Republi can newspaper has dared to print tim law preferring to select only such sen tonces and paragraphs subject by themselves to misconstruction Mn BRCTUS CLAY one of tho retiring members of the county election board representing the Republican party has nothing but words of praise for the fairness and consideration with which hill recommendations were treated by- his Democratic col leagues on the boJanl Messrs Chenault anti Langford Mr Clay says that the Election law having been declared constitutional and placed upon the statute books it was the duty of every citizen to uphold it For said Mrv Clay If itsa bad law fhe quickest way to get it repealed is to en force IL- This is a sensible and proper way to treat the subject aud we commend it to all who have prejudged the law and are making incendiary threats regardin- git It is the law it bas been tried in the 2000 precincts of Kentucky without a single complaint and we have faith that it will be vindicated again this year If however after a fair trial it is proven to be the iniquitous measure as viewed by its enemies we hope it will bo speedily amended orutterly erased from our statute books The Democratic party will not stand spon Sot fur any nina or measure that would rob citizens of their rights and suf ragijB With those sincere convictions and with faith In our party and Its lom inees we have given our hearty support to the ticket nominated at LouIs- ville and we ask all Democrats to re maul true to the patty that is largo ofiotigh and brave enough and good enough to cojrrect its own mistakes without glvin nssistance to those who would OBytIe roy It 1toVahitiltn JInd repie iloMl ffwji lr IT appears as though either Mr Goebel has lied or exCongresaman Colson has told an untruth To prove that there was gross political wrongs committed in the Eleventh District in 1896 the former cited now taking a vacation at Potoskey We stated that when out boating or riding with a girl it is dangerous to allow your opportuni ticS to go to waist Jittlu suspecting that had Mr Qrinstead followed that advice a fair damsel would be now perhaps at the bottom of Petoskey Lake Writing of his thrilling adventure to Mr Pedee Ferrill Manager of the Western Union this city Mr Grinstead on Friday last says reVo were about onehalf mile from shore when our boat capsized and it was only my cool head and ability to swim as well as the courage and confidence displayed by my fair Heroine that our lives were saved If I had had some flighty girl who wouldnt have listened to me we both would now be at the bottom of the lake Miss Moyer went down once but I immediately seized her and pulled her on top of the upturned boat until she hadrecovered from her stranglewuen she followed fractions and soon became reconciled to our perilous position I waved toy cap in the air and attracted the atten tion of u passing ferry boat the Search light which as soon as it sighted ue blew the distress whistle a1 want to say to you I was altogether a different man when the boat steamed along side of us and threw out the lifeline which was very acceptable I caught it at the first throw told Rose to hold on with both hands while I caught the rope with one hand and with the other around her waist we were pulled on deck The water was awfully cold anti Rose was almost chilled to death for we were in the water between 15 and 20 minutes So this ends my ac cident and I am proud to be alive The above is Mr Grinsteads own story the italics being ours for emphasis only He also enclosed this clipping from thePetoskey Courrant of Sept 11 corroboratingthe story Monday afternoon about four oclock Mr Fred L Grinstead of Richmond Ky and Miss Rose Moyer of this city started to cross the Harbor in a row boat just ofi the point and near Wc quetonsing Mr Grinstead lost his oar and in trying to recover it the boat was
