lifted here for the peoples cause in 1SOG On State issues Coy Stone said The situation in Kentucky is the cause of great concern to Democrats throughout l the country If the political effect of the approaching election should be only temporary and could be confined to Kentucky although still anxious for Democratic success my interest in the result would not be intense as It is lint knowing as I do that the election of a Republican Governor in this State would have a terribly depressing effect upon our party limcleeu woulu ne a staggering blow to the Democracy of the whole nation and at the same time would inspire Republicans everywhere with new hope and greater courage I cannot but feel in common with Demo crats throughout the Union the profoundest solicitude as to the outcome I have mingled so much with Democrats in other States have heard so many thousand expressions of anxiety as to the result from both Democrats and Republicans anti have read in time press so many predictions as to the out come and so many prophecies as to its effect that I am sure I do not overesti mate the national significance of the event I tell you gentlemen tho De mocracy of Kentucky is on trial before the Democracy of the nation Those of us who live iu other States believe Kentucky is a Democratic State but if the result of this election shall prove it to bo a Republican State or a doubtful State tho effect of that verdict cannot be computedII bring you a message from Missouri Not long ago Richard Bland a son of Kentucky who became ono of the great men of Missouri and the Union died A special election to choose his successor was held on the 29th of August last Every scheme which po litical cunning could invent mendacity exploit or corruption promote was at tempted to carry the district foi the Republican candidate It was the first hattie of the year and Republicans everywhere believed with reason that if they could by hook or crookcapture the district so long represented by Mr Bland in the Democratic Stato of Mis souri it would be taken ai an asurancu of easy victory in Kentucky and Ohio and In the national contest of the suc ceeding year It was a battle royal wo had with the eyes of the nation watch lug us The Democrats of tbe district were put to supreme test and thrust lug asido everything like local rancor and personal resentment and moved wholly by high considerations of na tional moment they rallied to the par ty and standard and won a victory as memorable as it was important a victory which filled the Democratic heart with the light of hope and at time same time cast a long shadow over the Re publican pathway Suppose we had Tost that district what think you would have been the effect Ah gentlemen wo can hardly exaggerate the effect of these true Will you show less of fealty and devotion than we I am not hero to call in question tho motives of men I am not here to indulge in vituperation or harsh attack but I am justified in say lug that when I am striving along with Mr Woodaou your national committee man and all the members of that com mittee and with a number of other de voted Democrats throughout the coun try to organize our party forces and prepare for the mighty struggle of next year when we are going about tho country at our own expense sacrifiing our personal interests and giving our time and effort to the important work of party organization we have a right to expect the support and encourage ment of our party associates in every State and we have a right to complain ayo bitterly complain if we are fired upon from the rear Do you not think so my friends I will not say that mutiny is party treason even when so full of menance to party success as it is home today but I will say that it is so unfortunate to be almost inexcusable The acrimonious division in the ranks of Kentucky Democrats is the most ominous cloud on tbe horizon of our party today- Gentlemen I speak to you without partiality or preduice I have no share in your local embroilments I have no interest in the personal phases of the contest here but as a Democrat from another State with some experience in political affair and knowledge of politi cal situations and one upon whom the National Democracy lisa imposed some measure of responsiblity I warn you that if you care for party success in 1900 you must elect a Democratic Gov ernor in November You may lose this State in November and yet carry it the following year although to lose it in November will make it a doubtful State in moo Remember your exper- Ience in 1895 and 1890 Will you re peat that mistake Will you duplicate that folly Will you place your State in Republican hands again this yearnnd Ihus givo your enemy a powerful ad vange over you when greater issues area stakeYou not GovBrownI nnd I never saw Mr and that was after his nomination Therefore when I urge the Democrats of Kentucky as I do to support Mr Goebels candacy I aIR not influenced by personal considerations I speak purely in the interest of the Democratic party witbout regard to men And I do not hesitate to come from another State to speak these words to Kentucky Democrats because the election is national in political effecf awl therefore vitally concerns tho party through out the Union although otherwise it is entirely local Everyone knows that either Goebel or Taylor will be elected There is no other personal antipathy or ob jection to Mr Goebel then put Goebel and Taylor aside and look at Bryan and McKinloyjis they rise to view a little way beyond That is the picture I see that is the contest to which law look jug I am not here to discuss your local squabbles 1 know but little about them although I will say that the ostensible cause of quarrel between you as they roach us iu other States if not trivial ara at least not of great impor tanceAll of us noted with regret the acrimony which characterized the Louisville convention I knew Gen Hardin and Capt Stone personally and knew Mr Goebel by reputation I ha l watched with at least a passing in terest the contest between them prior to the convention and knowing some thing of the fighting quality of Ken tuckians I was not much surprised at the tropical temperature which pre railed at time convention I was sure before tho convention met that who ever won would go away fully convinced that he had had a fight But I wan also sure from my knowledge of tho men that tho interests and welfare of the old Commonwealth would be faithfully guarded by the victor who over he might booIt is time now I think to let tho tide of passion ebb and the hot blood cool It is time now to turn our faces to time future and ask whiit oiir duty is to party and to coun try I know but little of the socalled Goebel election law abput which to much is being said in Republican newspapers This much atleast Is true as I iindejrstand that it was passed over Gov IJradleys veto by a Democratic Legislature The Democratic party therefore is responsible for it If being in easy touch with Time Northern Bank of Kentucky won tho contest and my young vote went for naught judged by the usual Standard This was In 1857 In 1859 Abraham Lincoln was nominated at Chicago by the antislavery party Stephen A Dona las was the regular nominee of tho Democratic party North and John C Breckenriilge of tho other ultra pro slavery party of the South Belle of Tennessee was the WhigKnown Nothing candidate Hero certainly was a condition that required careful consideration on the part of voters who wero patriotic and anti desired to sec our Republican form of Government
