possessions Hawaiishowing tho island where it idolatrous and the amongthosooneebenighted Cocklo from Eminence made a short but sweet address entitled Our Mis sionaries Dr Niva Stevens mission ary to the kingdom of the rising sun Japan gave a very interesting talk It will be remembered that mud has been said all along in the Christian Guide about Miss Stevens and her work in Japan She Is from this State Wednesday morning the regular con vention opened with prayer by Howard Y Cree AtTaddress of welcome was mad by the Kev Hugh McClellan minister of the Shelbyville Christian church and was responded to by Rev WMlLloyd of this city His address was a powerful plea for homo missions Mr Elliott who is secretary handed in an excellent report of the State Board Roy Collis of the Broadway Christian church at Lexington made an interesting talk the subject of which was the Orphans Home at Louis yule He showed how Godlike it would bo to provide for the fatherless and motherless out of the wealth with which the Almighty One has blessed us P H Duncan pastor of the Lud icw Christian church talked on Our Sunday Schools Greatest Need Rev Sweeneypastor of the Christian church in Parismade an able addressontitied Our plea and Missions It will be remembered that he was nominated at the Republican convention at Lexington for a State office Prof John G Fee that grand old man from Bnrea our county made a short but pointed address on the needs of thecolored peo pie of central Kentucky the first was to take under the control and supervision of the church The independent chool organization at Camp Nelson Jessamine county the motion was sec onded by Brother Dejaructt from Nicholasvillo who spoke favorably in regard the good qualities of the colored servents from that section The motion carried without a dessenting voice Several persons present wellknown in this city who were not on the program wore Kev Deride of Frankfort it will be remembered that lie held a very successful protracted meeting in the Christian church this city a few years since RevHealeyfrom Cynthiana who delivered the magnificent address at Miss Lloyds commencement exercises Rev Burnett Pinkerton of Lincoln comity who taught a male school in this city the writer being one of his pupils afterwards was pastor of the Christian church for several years and principal of Madison Female Institute for quite a while Rev Whartor mis stonEr from India made a powerful plea for the dying heathens of that land He spoke of tho dreadfuTfamine ill that country and the untold suffer ing of millions of the people He spoke Of the twentyfive millions of widows of that land and of the great desire of the people to learn the English lan guage as they think it is the language of the greatest people or race upon the face of time earth and hold a largo convention with delegates of natives froiu all over India of over five thous and who could speak English fluently He said this was a sign that was break jug over that dark land One feature that helped to make the convention a success was the part the churches In time country took in making tho conven tion a success They took a day each and suppled charge of time campaign in Kentucky I know of my personal knowledge that Senator Goe bel was very solicitous for the election of Mr Bryan that he tendered his tier vices to me to do all in his power and raised me more money to elect Bryan than any other man in the State His own county the home of Carllnle ave all increase Democratic majority due largely to lib personal effects In the campaign for the nomination for Gov ernor he declared in every speech be made that he was for BryanBIackburn and that he would not accept the nomi nation unless the Chicago platform was reaffirmed With this plain as active a part as some peo- plesupposedMy Ii interviewer was a distin gulshed minister of the Gospel for a generation a conspicuous figure in religious enterprise in Kentucky known and loved by thousands even beyond the borders of tho State To his aux ious inquiry I replied that it was claim ed that all the good men in Montgom ery county whito and black were against the Democratic ticket but there were enough sinners in Montgomery county to make some noise for GoebelBlackburn and Democracyjthat not being myself invested with the crystalline virtue and elevated piety that characterizes the
