Hanging of Jobs Yates Beau We were much interested in a short article in a recent number of Wake Forest Student It was sent by George Anderson Foote son of the late Dr George A Foote of Warrenton an hon ored and highly reputable physician lately deceased He first gives an ex tract from Appletons Cyclopoedla of Biography wrongly printed Biol ogy of the hanging of that gallant and meritorious officer Capt John Yates Beall a native of Virginia and born In 1S35 and hanged on the 24th of February 1865 as a spy A sketch was found among Dr Footes papers who was a surge n in the confederate army and was imprisoned In Fort Co Iambus New York harbor Dr Footes posthumous paper is both interesting anti informing He tells of the efforts made to save the life of Capt Beall who was a regularly commissioned con federate officer by Coy Andrew of Massachusetts and others bjit in vain Dr Footes cell in which he was con fined was adjoining Capt BeaRs Beau and John Wilkes Booth had been room mates at college anti were dear friends Booth tried every way to secure Beaus release from prison but in vain An effort to secure his escape was made in which Dr Foote was to be a party In fact two plans came to naught The interesting point really of his toric interest is to follow Dr Footes private memorandum gives a statement that wilt surprise many as it did us The common idea is that President Lin coln was murdered b Tohn Wilkes Booth because he wasthe head of the northern states nnd was responsible for the war upon the soutliln other words that Booth in being in intense sympathy with the south anti being somewhat daft had assassinated the president on account of his course in the war After the plans failed Dr Foote says Booth hurried to Washington and on his knees implored Pres ident Lincoln and Secretary Seward to pardon or at least respite Beall Lincoln promised tb respite but that night ordered his execution Dr Foote saysThis order was executed and Beall was hanged within 30 yards of my window and inside Fort Columbus dad not at Johnsons island as has been frequently reported Booth for what he termed the per tidy of President Lincoln toward him self and friend Heal at once swore to avenge his friends death by killing both Lincoln and Seward He did not intend to shoot Lincoln in the theater but the contemplated opportunity did not offer itself elsewhere But for the fact that Booths spur caught in the curtain that fatal night he would have escapeda least for a time The war had nothing to do with the assassination of the president it was due simply and solely to revenge intensified by Booths love and admira tion forthis friend Booth went to New York the morn ingof Bealls execution and being so grievously disappointed at what had occurred he became measurably an insane man I had not the least idea of Booths plan to assassinate the presi dent This plan was known only to one man anti to him Booth revealed it only an hour before the assassina lion
