It nifty bo interesting to of winter wheat in the principal wheat growing states at this time, according to the weekly bulletins issued by tiie Climate and Crop Service for those states. In the Statu of Ohio tiie crop is in much the saino condition as in this State, early sown wheat on well drained land being promising, but there is a considerable portion of tho acreage which is considered worthless. In Indiana wheat is badly damaged in the northern part of the State, hut quite promising in central and southern districts. In Illinois promising conditions prevail, as a rule, only in tho southern part of the State; badly damaged in central and northern portions. In Michigan much of the wheat will be plowed up and planted to other crops. In Missouri the damage in the northern part of the Stato amounts toa practical failure, but in the other portions favorable weather conditions have repaired to a great extent the injury from winter killing. In Kansas the latest reports indicate from one-ha- lf to of a crop. Winter wheat has also suffered "Wisconsin. Iowa and Nebraska, but the damage there will be repaired by sowing to spring wheat. In this State the seasonable weather of the latter half of April produced n rapid growth, but there is some complaint that the plant is not starting well and that it will not be sufficient to cover the ground. The improvement is confined to early and medium late wheat, the extrenio late being general ly reported worthless. Spots in fields where the snow was blown off still show the effects of the exposure, and it is highly probable that these spots will remain bare to the end. It is estimat ed that 7 per cent, of the ncrage will be plowed up. Oats were sown very late, in fact seeding Avas barely completed with the close of the month. Many farmers, in their eagerness, sowed while the ground was too wet for cultivation, resulting in poor germination and indifferent growth. "Where sown with ground in good condition the crop is coming on nicely. Corn planting made considerable progress during the month, and whilo there yet remains much ground to be broken planting began ns early as the middle of the month. Tho early plant ed came up quickly and is growing rapidly. No complaint is made of injury from cut worms or other insects. The ground dried very rapidly during the latter days of the mouth, and somo difficulty is experienced in getting the ground in good condition for planting. Tobacco plants, though plentiful, will be Iato. Indications are that setting will not bo generally begun until the 25th of May, on account of plants being small. Indications aro for an av erage acreage. Clover generally wintered well and has made wonderful growth since the advent of warm weather. It is now ready for stock to be turned on. Reports on clover sown this spring differ. In onio counties rcsowing has been found necessary on account of being killed by late freezes; also that it has been badly drifted into bunches by the heavy rains. Others report an excellent catch obtained from first sowing, and that it is getting a good start. Fastures have mado equally rapid growth, and, considering the condition on April 1st, tho present condition of 8G is quite satisfactory. May 1st finds livo stock in good con dition after the long, hard winter, Very littlo complaint is made of liog cholera, and there is an entire absence of other diseases. Sheep that were suffering from lack of pasturage are now rapidly regaining lost vitality. Prospects for fruit havo improved wonderfully during the month. Apples, pears, cherries and plums have been in full bloom, with the. weather conditions perfect for fruiting. Many correspondents make special mention of tho unusually heavy apple bloom. Raspberries and blackberries will be a failure, tho canes being killed to the roots. Strawberries will bo a failure, though a fow reports of live bloom are received from the western and southeastern sections. A short time ago a gentleman in town who takes a. great interest in livo stock, wished to purchase an extra milk cow. After searching somo time lie found ono just to his liking, but on bringing her homo ho was annoyed to discover sho had no upper- teeth. He sent immediately for a veteran stock") buyer, who lives just outside of the city limits. As a joke the latter told him his cow had a serious disease of gums which would prevent her grow ing any more teeth, and made her worthless as a milk cow. He offered to take her off his hands at two-thirthe value at which she had been appraised. To his surprise the ilisconso- lato purchaser jumped at the chance.'
