we are hearing again now Americans as radically opposed to each other in most things as we are Calhoun and Corwin joined with Clay Webster Lowell Clayton and Clemens against it What American can read this with out an indignant refusal to consent that the blood of those once our allies shall saturate the soil on which they were born that we may be praised by the London Times for our noble work for progress in furthering British plans for dismembering and robbing China John MClayton himself the author of the ClaytonBuhver treaty and open ly in favor of cooperating with England in this was openly opposed to hav ing anything to do with the political methods of British imperialism What is there in stalwart Americanism its native Americanism if you will except that GermanAmericans are saying now Wagers says the new law provides that the trustee elected shall hold his office for three years Jrom the first of July succeeding hid election Therefore by reason of a change in the law and in order that there may not be- n vacancy in the board each trustee elected under theold law must hold one year longer than he was elected for And it is the duty of the trustee who has acted ns chairman during correspondents representing 103 counties- It may be interesting note the con dition of winter wheat in the principal wheat growing states at this time according to the weekly bulletins issued by the Climate and Crop Service for those states In the State of Ohio the crop is in much the same condition as in this State early sown wheat on well drain ed land being promising but there is considerable portion of the acreage which is considered worthless In In diana wheat is badly damaged in the northern part of the State but quite promising in central and southern districts In Illinois promising conditions prevail as a rule only in tho southern part of the State badly damaged in centraland northern portions In Michigan much of the wheat will be plowed up and planted to other crops Iii Missouri the damage in the northern part of the Stato amounts toa prac tical failure but in the other portions favorable weather conditions have repaired to a great extent the injury from winter killing In Kansas the latest reports indicate from onehalf to two thirds of a crop Winter wheat has al so suffered Wisconsin Iowa and Nebraska but the damage there will be repaired by sowing to spring wheat In this State the seasonable weather of the latter half of April produced a rapid growth but there is some com plaint that the plant is not starting well and that it will not be sufficient to cover the ground The improvement is confined to early and medium late wheat the extreme late being general ly reported worthless Spots in fields where tile snow was blown off still show the effects of the exposure and it is highly probable that these spots will remain bare to the end It is estimat ed that 7 per cent of the acrage will be plowed up Oats were sown very late in fact seeding was barely completed with the close of the month Many farmers in their eagerness sowed while the ground was too wet for cultivation resulting in poor germination and indifferent growth Where sown with ground in good condition the crop is coming on nicelyCorn planting made considerable progress during the month and while there yet remains much ground to be brokon planting began as early as the middle of the month The early plant ed came up quickly and is growjng rap idly No complaint is made of injury from cut worms or other insects The ground dried very rapidly during the latter days of the month and somo dif ficulty is experienced in getting the ground in good condition for planting Tobacco plants though plentiful will be late Indications are that set ting will not be generally begun until the 25th of May on account of plants being small Indications are for an av erage acreage Clover generally wintered well and has made wonderful growth since the advent of warm weather It is now ready for stock to be turned on Re ports on clover sown this spring differ In some counties tasowing has been found necessary on account of bein killed by late freezes also that it has been badly drifted into bunches by the heavy rains Others report an excel lent catch obtained from first sowing and that it is getting a good start Pastures have mado equally rapid growth and considering the condition on April 1st the present condition of 80 is quite satisfactory May 1st finds live stock in good con dition after the long hard winter Very little complaint is made of hog cholera and there is an entire absence of other diseases Sheep that were suffering from lack of pasturage are now rapidly regaining lost vitality Prospects for fruit have improved wonderfully during the month Espec ially is this
