is afforded a pleas ure sccond only to having the distin guishcd gentleman in our midst It is not alone because our guest has won national renown Us not because ho is the closest man iu the Nation to Mr Bryan nor that he divided with the latter the honors at the greatest political banquet over held on earth that wo fool so dolightcdand satisfied with his visit But rather because the lofty expectations which had been aroused by nil these circumstances were more than realized by the best Democratic speech delivered here in many years before one of the largest crowds that ever filled the spacious court house to overflowing from wall to wall And that his telling words struck responsive chords in the hearts of his hearers was ovidenced by the unmistakable manifestations of approval that drowned the speaker words in cheer alter cheer Judge Tar vin is the kind of champion of a common rouse a cause he declared that should be as close to the heart of one poor man as another 110 matter what his croW or color to send forth among the masses lIe KNOWS whereof lit ppeaks and he fears no man that treads Gods footstool And when his own masterful logic fails he simply quotes from Carlisle at 1C to 1 Mr Tarvin says whenever ho wishes to use harsh language about the gold standard he simply quotes his former fellow townsman John G Carlisle nUll whenovor he wishes to criticise the lotion BROADWAY LENGOKYa- e1iy y JudgeJasP T rvins Tea 5 e akI- n on Q e the presence of six hundred attentive and earnest listeners lion Wm B Smith on Monday introduced Judge Tarvin who said About a hundred and twenty years ago Samuel Adams of Massachusetts said Truth Loves an Appeal to the Common Sense of the People and if there is Anything in this Government above the Comprehension of the Masses of the People it has no Proper place There You know that it is said of us and by us I mean Democrats that we talk too much I believe in talk i sIlence Is the one thing most desired by those now controlling the legislative and executive affairs of the National Government T those of you who believe as I do I would say talk as long as you can find any one to listen to you and when you can talk express your own convictions beliefs and sentiments and you may bo sure that they will be the beliefs con vie lions and sentiments of Americans and not of flunkies of Kentuckians and not of toadies of Democrats and not of the chattels of the money power My proposition is that the Democratic National Convention of 1000 should adopt as n whole the Chicago Platform of 1890 I hear from some sources the contention that the plank in that platform advocating the free and unlimited coinage of silver and gold at the ratio of 1G to 1 by this country independent of the action of any other country should be omitted I am always inclined to rc yard those advocating such a step with suspicion You Will generally find that those advocating this course voted for Mr McKinley in 1800 If you find any who did not vote for Mr McKinley in 1800 advocating this step youwillproba bly also find upon investigation that their circumstances and conditions have changed since 1890 and that they have alliances or employment now that they did not have in 18JG It is said that Mr Croker and those belonging to him are now favoring the omission of that plank from the platform of next year and that Mr Croker and his following supported Mr Bryan in 1896 But 1 refer you to the election returns from the State and City of New York in 1890 to demonstrate to you whether Mr Croker and those belonging to him supported Mr Bryan by vote or him by professions only 1 submit to that the doctrine of independent bimetalhsni at 10 to 1 cannot be divorced by the JUdg- ment of any candid mans mind from the other doctrine advocated by the Chi chago Platform of 1B9G or from the doctrines that will by common consent bo added to that platform in 1000 I suggest to you that the man who is opposed to the control of our financial affairs being left in the hands of organized capital Is also opposed to the control of the courts of the land being left in the hands of organized capital resulting in further government by injunction and that tile man who is opposed to the control of our financial system by organized capital is likewise opposed to the proposition of leaving it to organized capital to saytha the wealth of the laud shall bear no part of the burden of taxation and to con tinuo in force the proposition that the government ol this country has no powor to levy any tax on incomes And I suggest further that he who is opposed to the organization and existence and operation of trusts and combinations is opposed to that system of finance that rendersthe existence of trusts and com practicable He who is opposed to trusts and combinations is likewise opposed to that system upon which trusts and combinations are built The less money there is the easier it is to concectrate or corner it The snore money there is the more difficult it is to concentrate control or corner it by a few The trust is not a thing of a day it is a gradual outgrowth of conditions it is part of the process and an important step in the process leading to their establishment was the demonetization of silver the decrease of the amount of money and an increase in value of the money remaining and an increase in the facilities for concentrating and cornering the money which remained The dif ficulties in the way of organization and of trusts ant combinations would be double under a system of independent bimetallism at 16 to 1 whereby the people of this land would have the use of all the money known to the world instead of having the use of only onehalf of it as is true under a gold standard No one is possessed of stronger convictions upon the subject of independent bimetallism at 10 to 1 than am 1 No one believes in it snore thoroughly more conscientiously or more consistently and my belief and my convictions are as strong as in 1890 but I realize and always have that this doctriue is not all but only a part It is not all of the Chicago platform but it is a constituent part of it That platform is a formulated protest against the aggressions and power of organized wealth and one of the great aggressions of organized wealth and one of the great demonstrations of its power was the demonetization of silver in 1873 just as another demonstration of its power is afforded by tIme acquittal of Mr Quay in Pennsylvania and by the fact that Richard Croker in New York is at liberty I think that he who is opposed to the control of our financial system by the few representatives of organized capital will likewise be opposed to the control of our foreign policy those people and opposed to the adoption and execution of any foreign policy the murder or enslavement of any innocent or harmless peoples benefit of the organized wealth of the United States or for the enrichment of those who own and control the machinery of the gov eruuient And I believe that those who oppose the control of our financial af fairs by organized capital are likewise opposed to the making of any alliance be tweeu this republican government and a monarchy for the purpose of carry ipg out a conspiracy to rob murder and destroy any people on earth for the purpose of enriching those who are already rich in and England IiI short it is true in my judgment that every mIlD in the United States who fails to agree with the proposition that the organized wealth of this country ought to own and control the President and the Congress and to so control and shape everything as to further enrich the rich and further impoverish the poor is likewise opposed to the gold standard and is favorable to the doctrine that as the demand of this people for motley is constantly increasing this people should have the use of all the money known to the world instead of having their supply decreased by taking away the use of onehalf in other words every Democrat in the United States is opposed to thl1 gold standard more strongly than we were opposed to it in 1896 There are no Democrats in this country except Chicago platform Democrats There is no division between Democrats There is no lack of harmony among Democrats They are of the same mind the same opinion anti there is no occasion and no use for any cry for harmony used as a pretext to induce Democrats to concede to their enemies a part of that in winch they believeanti for which they are contending Democracy means more than it ever meant before It means a formulated organ ized forceful and earnest defense by seven million Americans against the ag greesions the extortion and the robberyof organized wealth and against time proposition that the government country ought to be administered by organized wealth instead otby the people The sun of Clovelandisin has set never to rise again while upon thehori zon we can see the coming light and promise of free government and tho do strtiction of corporate and capitalistic power presaging the rising in effulgence and glory of the sun of William J Bryan of Nebraska I say there is nn lack of harmony I will not say that New York is the enemys country but I will say that New York is a country in possession of time enemy Tens of thousands of men are kept out of the Democratic party in time Slate of Now York because of their hatred of Crokerism in New York City Hundreds of thousands of men in this country are kept out of the Democratic party because they do not care to bemused to support and maintain and uphold Crokerism and the practice of Crokerism in Now York City and they do not want to be parties to any attempt to fasten that system upon the administra tion of the affairs of the national government If you will think you will he able to see that Crokerism has never brought anything to theDemocratic party It did assist in the election of Grover assisted in his election after a conference in New York City in whuh a contract was entered into by which time Democratic party of the United States pledged the accomplish men of a purpose foreign to the partyand for which it was not organized and for time benefit of a few politicians ew City They say that the Democracy cannot elect a resident in 1900 without the vote of the State of New York and they further say that the vote of the State of New York cannot be had without time aid of Mr Croker and tliose belonging ao him If both these propositions are true which I dont believe I would say that it Is better for the country and better for Democracy that we should nol win It is better to have defeat without Crokerism than victory with it There Is only one way by which the assistance of Crokerism can be had and that waj Is by pnrchaso and that purchase would mean a pledge that a Democratic ad ministration if elected should to carry out the promises of the platform upon which it went into power and should divert the Democratic organization and the Democratic administration to purposes and ends directly contrary to the wish and will of the Democracy of the land and of those who created the administrationIn a man in this country who is lig enough to own a court or to dictate to any judge his course In his position s too big to stay in the Democratic party aud ought to be out of it just as any combination in this country that has grown strong enough to control a court or dictate to a judge has grown too strong for Democracy and too strong for the peace and welfare of this people You cannot enter into an alliance with those controlling New York City politics unless you agree to abandon that for which you contended in 1890 and to abandon that for which we are now expecting to contend in 1000 There is nothing in this country more unDemocratic than Crokerism unless it be the insufferable flunkey ism and toadyism of New Yorks money aristocracy There is nothing in common between us and them Our interests are antagonis tic They desire to control the government in the interest of a few at the cost of time many We desire to use the government for the Interests of the many even at the sacrifice of a few I want to ask you how it would have been from 1776 to 1783 had a part of contendingforexcept that they wanted England to retain control of American courts or that they wanted England to dictateour foreign policy or wanted England to alliances with other countries Time answer is evident Time purpose of American patriots in those days was to overthrow English control and 110 theI tttnpromise Time purpose of American Democrats today and American powerinJefferson said once let the hands that do a nations work that produce a intiana wealth also guide a nations government and nil will be well Whose hands are guiding now Take the Supreme Court of the United States How did the decision in the income tax case tome about In answer ing that question you may inquire how did the judged wHo decided that ques tion getrtheir places on that bench You may consider in that connection that today the power of appointing the judges of the highest court of the world in whose hands ultimately rests the fate of all the people in this country rests with a man known as President Hanna You may remember that that power once rested In the hands of a man known as President You may imagine the kind it men that President Hanna and President Cleveland would bo likely to ap point They would likely appoint men whose sympathies or desires or tastes ajuqetlmeyhiuDtbank or hunt men who have spent years in that business They like to find men who believe that there is no part of this country West or South of Pmiiiy1 vania They like men who think that people at large are incapable of selfgov ernment and that those who ought to govern live in certain parts of New New Jersey or Ohio As long as we have such judges we may expect that it- will be considered an infamous outrage to undertake to make the concentrated rails of labor of which the have been robbed for the enrichment of others bear any part of the burdens of taxation- I will call your attention to the fact that in 1890 Mr Hobart was nominated and thereafter declared elected to the office of Vice President of the United States Have you ever considered why he was nominated Has it ever Occurred toyou that he came from New Jersey the hotbed and birth place of trusts Has it ever occurred to you that this was the reason of his nomination arid that ho was their chosen representative And I sugacet to you further that Mr Grim has been made attorneyglneral of time United States by lreslllent Hanna it is time duty and it Is the powl of the AttorneyGeneral of time United States to stop tho operations of the trusts Why select a Governor of New Jer soy who was made governor by the trusts to perform this work Why select destroyhisyou ought to have sense enough to understand these things Why was Mr Hay our may be able to see the tie that binds You nay understand why it is that the money oer of this country is seeking to make war with Germany and to form an alliance with England fn time face of ho fact that Germany has always been friendly to us and that England has always been our enemy and in faco of the fact that Germany was present in person and in sympathy at the birth of this republic while your wonder may cease when yon know that General Egan possesses knoWl- edge and that be could tell a great deal about the conlracbybetween the United States Government and the Beef Trust during the tate trouble with Spain under winch heel was furnished to tile soldiers There Were about four hundred sold iers killed by bayonets or bullets in that war and about six thousand killed by rotten beef furnished by the admin istration of President Hanna under n contract With the Beef Trusts with Mr Griggs as AttorneyGeneral The ratio between those who were killed by time administration and those win were killed in battle is about 1G to 1 But while no Democrat and no true American approves the wholesale slaughter of the lIOR more of whom have been killed by the administration than by the Spaniards
