industry in this country belongs to them and that no other man shall engage in it thatthe boot and shoe in uatry is theirs that the china trade is theirs and so on throughout nil the trades and industries known in this country until it has become so today that most of the industries of this country have come under the control f a set of mena very few men hav ing an aggregation of wealth behind them The result of it is that a few men can control prices of all articles produced in the United States or manufactured in the United States they can rcguixte the sale of them they can make tho price one thing today and another thing tomorrow and if one of you undertakes to go into business in competition with them they can come next door to you and sell for half what you sell for until they break you updand run you out of the business are doing this all over the the firesulting that retail stores are being driven out of the land that those who are the masters and have their own shops and clerks are being driven out and those who are masters are being made servants The result of it is that the labor Iandbeing presented to whom it belongs by inheritance and by right is being thing is that these trusts would not exist in tho United States were it not for the fact that parts of the public administration have been corruptly diverted to stand behind them and protect them If the laws of the United States were admin istered as they are made no trusts could exist in this country but the danger is that some of the executive and legislative departsmeuls have been corruptly diverted in a position favorable to them and instead of crushing thcuijout of existence are undertaking to support and maintain them and it comes to the courts and use courts alone for their destruction and it must be by grand juries in the courts throughout this country that trusts are to be destroyed it they can be des troyed at all We have these trusts in Kenton county There is an insurance combination in this county indictments were returned by the last grand jury It is the duty of the grand jury to ex- amIne into this matter and if satisfied from tho evidence that an illegal combination exists under this statute then it is your duty to find indictments and hope when the trial juries come to ispose of this matter that they go fur ther and inflict jail sentences as well as nes I hope and believe the next Legislature of Kentucky willmake the commission of these acts a felony in order that the doors of the penitentiary may to opened to receive the men who are guilty of these combinations I say it is your duty to indicttheso people if thoy are engaged in that business n Frankfort eightyfour of them were indicted and fined a5 number of indi viduals agents were tried and one man on a J urof twelve saved them from go ing tojail In Georgetown the other day they tried forty odd of these com panies who had entered into this illegal unjust and oppressive insurance rate to make you pay more insurance than you ought to pay for their benefit in other words systematized robbery and there they were fined by the petit jury and probably will continue to be fined until they abandon it The purpose of it is that those in cortain business will fix certain prices and you cant get it unless you pay that price and that thing exists in Covington and Kenton county today just as it does at Georgetown and Frankfort and it devolves upon the grand jury of this county to say that it dosnt exist any longer They go futher than this there is nothington earths that the trusts wont do I believe that an aggregation of great wealth always has a tendency to brutalize I believe that the aggrega gout of great wealth always lifts a tendency to remove every instinct and every spirit and every feelincof human ity that men ought to have You will find in tho hearts of the worst crimin abs that comes into court something that is good something that is desirable something that iworth having but you will find nothing on earth in organizations wealth that is good or that is worth having There is no limit there is no business in which they are not willing to engage there is no people that they are not willing to rob there is nothing sacred i nothing that they will let alone there Is nothing poor enough for them to have pity on i tlierq is nothing humble enough or weak enough for them to pity They would rob the graves of the dead if they could reach their hands into them For every five cents that you pay forschool books for your children you pay 10 or15 cents in addition by way of tribute to the School Book Trust There isnt a school book sold to a school child in tho city of Covingicro that isn unmitigated isnt school book or aschoo imp e ment purchased by a child in the city of CovlngtoaJhat does not involve the transaction of taking two or three times the price ot that book from the parents of that poor child and putting it in the pockets of the robber trust I say crank his predictions on seismic disturbances have been remarkable fulfilled As for instance the great earthquake at Zante in 1803 he several days before the earthquake occurred sent warning to the press all over Europe Again in March 1893 ho was invited to lecture before the Tourist Club of Vienna on the subject of earthquakes but while accepting the invitation postponed the lecture until after April 13 as an earthquake would take place about that time and he would prefer to include tho results of his investigation of tho earth quake in his lecture And as the German proverb has it has du mir geschen the earthquake did occur on April 8 and was felt all over Southern Hungary and did much incidents like these could be quoted whero predictions have been made ono to two years in advance and thing is that these trusts would not exist in tho United States were it not for the fact that parts of the public administration have been corruptly diverted to stand behind them and protect them If the laws of the United States were admin islered as they are made no trusts could exist in this country but the danger is that some of the executive and legislative departsmenls have been corruptly diverted in a position favorable to them and instead of crushing tthernout of existence are undertaking to support and maintain them and it comes to the courts and the courts alone for their destruction and it must be by grand juries in the courts throughout this country that trusts are to be destroyed It they can be des troyed at all We have these trusts in Kenton county There is an insurance combination in tills countyIndictments were returned by the last grand jury It is the duty of the grand jury to examine into this matter and if satisfied from the evidence that an illegal com bination exists under this statute then it is your duty to find indictments and I hope when the trial juries come to dispose of this matter that they go fur ther and inflict jail sentences as well as fines I hope and believe the next Legislature of Kentucky willmake the commission of these acts a felony in order that the doors of the penitentiary may l e opened to receive the men who are guilty of these combinations I say it is your duty to indict these people I f they are engaged in that hpsiuess fn Frankfort eightyfour of them were indicted and fined al number of individuals agents were tried and one man on a jury of twelve saved them from go lug tojail In Georgetown the other day they tried forty odd of these com antes who had entered into this illegal unjust and oppressive insurance rate to make you pay more insurance than you ought to pay for their benefit in other words systematized robbery and there they were fined by the petit jury and Probably will continue to be fined until they abandon itrrhe purpose of it is that those in certain business will fix certain prices antI ybU cant get It unless you pay that price and that thing exists in Covington and Kenton county today just as it does at Georgetown and Frankfort and it devolves upon the grand jury 0f this county to say that it dosnt exist any longer They go futher than this there is nothingtin earth
