BY MR HERRING TN OF ATLANTA herSSPOTSadorned with the spark of the virgin nigbtcomes forth from her palace in the East and opens wido tho gates of day and the sun glorious in his might bursts over the Eastern mountains laughing the low ering clouds to scorn and forcing those lesser lights of the night one by one heavibeauty and we are dazzled by his flam log lightjust so every ago and time has been brightened by some dazzling human illuiniuary who bursting upon the world laughed the clouds of oppd7 sitloa and adversity to scorn and made the lesser light of the age dwindle in to insignificance before his matchless brilliucy Tonight while I raise my voice in giatitudo for the services ren dered mankind by the men of all ages and of all times I wish to speak especially in memory of those who stand like glittering suns in the works of ages Those men who have stamped their names in the pillows of their age by ever clinging to that implicablo duty which we value as the most pre cious jewel in the crown of human virtue and make the test of human character We cannot pass on to the lives of these great men without first saying- a word III remembrance of the works of thosewho thought less gilLed In genius having spent their lives for the bettet ments of this world Some have fought the mountains turned the beds of rivers and reared bridges over roaring water falls We think little about them and wo care less When their work isI done we ride over the railway in an observation car and look down thous ands and thousands of feet into the depths they have bridged and we hard ly give hem a thought Bat at cray step they have carried civilization before them and we must honor them in singing the centuries praises Others have found their work in the murmur of some gentle brook or in the whispering breezes of the leafy woodland trees Have caught the mocking glory of cloudless nights the cold glitter of stars and the golden scheen ol midnight mcons caught the tones of the restless waves as they dash against some rocky coast and transformed them into verse Have gathered the spirit of their age into their work and embalmed it for the coming generation Left an inspiration for all manner of mankind and a name that will out stand the everlasting hills For ages wclook back upon the works of the statemen and we see many occasions where vast audiences have been moved to ihought and action by the words of speaker when the hearts of men have been swayed by his eloquence aH ripened grain before a gentle autumn breeze In looking at the works of these great men we cannot forget the Amen can Satesmen and we point to them with pride as we join them with tho others of this world But with all this the pen baa not been mighter than the sword and wo must bow our heads in reverence to the mighty deeds of OUr wsrIeis Those men who Lave braved the stories of the gigantic ocean who have given up all and stepped fearless ly into battle when its raging fury seemed as awful as the destruction of the dues of Sodon and Gomarrah We are unable to pay them their honest due but I will say as some one has said before meCheers for the living tears for tile dead We must now pass on to the lives of some of those men whose works rise above others as a towering peakabove a surrounding mountain range Oar thoughts naturally collect about the lives of those men who have transformed this earth from a vast wilde ness into n thriving world Then let me carry you back about three hundred years before Christ To tho time of that Alexander whom the world bas called great In radiant youth his foremost man of hs race and time pevLaps the mlghtest genius of any race and of any iimo Let us next turn to Caesar that combined general and statesman who In his time was virtually lord of tbe Roman world His career was fined with success and his brilliant achieve meuts will ever brighten the pats of history It baa been said that wlen he returned from his famous conquests there were marching beneath his stan dartls soldiers gathered mom nearly every count7 beneath the heavens in his precession were led captive princes from all parts of the world and his triumph celebrating his many victories far eclipsed mI magniQcance anything that Roman had ever witnessed Caesar had his marks of greatness and his many friends but he also had some glaring faults and the idea of March has shone that Jiev had his t enemies Let us now turn to the Civil War in England For three years It has been raging when there rises topromlnence a man destinedto be one oLthe greatest characters in history It Is Oliver Cromwell and in connection with his Ironsides he lisa left a subject for all historians A man whose talents were of the highest order gifted in military genius and a keen insight into human affairs he did a mighty work for Eng land Today ho lies sleeping while the tides of life go ebbing and flowing besides bim Sleep on Thou Match less Cromwell Thou wast wrong in some thnge but thou didst intend to do right andlor thy death well may old Englands winds mourn on more sorowfully well may the cedars bow their droping headland the oceans waves break more dolefully along old Elg Isles in search of classic ground Surely though the old Greeks were the foun ders of all good and noble literature they have reached their culminating point in the English Shakespeare and the old Warwickshire lanes decked simply with the hawthorn and the sweet briar roses through which May Arden walked leading her boyangel by the hand are as sacred as any parts of this earth once trodden by the feet of Homer or of Plato So let us stop for a moment at Stratford and glance at that little gabled roof low room home of English ling Whom as Carlisle de claresno time or chance Parliament- or combination of Parliaments can dethrone As the son of a poor farmer be was undoubtedly deprived of some of the advantages ola thorough education but he hind nature to study and bo seemed to know the flowers of every month To understand the very movements 6 l the birds of the air ansi the creeping insects at his feet The history of eld Stratford itself was indeed a study Then there was old Tniy J Shakespeares verse No doubt one of the secrets of his useful life was his wonderful love for home and while he was in London contributing to the stores of this worlds literature the desires and ambitions of this country bred Shakespeare seem to return find center about the Stratford of his youth and his last days are spent amid the scenea and associa tions of bis boyhoo- dIt seems strange time he rushes on in his maddning career for power until God In his almighty wisdom stopped him when men and armies could not We cannot get better idea of his life than by a glance at his warlike career which presents a beautiful example of the justice of God Then let us picture him as be gathers together his soldiers from every home in the realm The mothers as with aching hearts and tearstained cheeks turn away from their departing eons and the sisters giving the farewell kissI Wa see them as they march off under the floating banners and by tbe muffled beats of drums We cheer
