his trip to the South wiped out the bitterness of the wara fact ac complished years before and against his protest and objection There is no South The people living in the Southern States of tills one Union are Americans just as you are Ainpricans This Hag Is their nag just as it ia your flag Anti a hundred and more years ago the heroes and states men of the Southern States did as much to assure the existence the glory and the fame of that flag as did the heroes and states in the Northeii and Eastern States The people in the Southern States value and desire the respect and the affection or with the courage to express them and the man hood to maintain them Although of a nature fierce aggressive and corn mamling ha believed in the virtue of law and recognized its vital import anti did his part in maintaining it In paying tribute to his memory it is well for Democrats to remember that in time virtue of law lies the only safety for this people and that in its abuses lit the only dangers confronting them Almost from the beginning of lime government in one form or anUhcr lias existed in every country of tin peoiled earth In early days all gov ernments wcreadmiuistered wholly bj force and to the strong belonged tin fruits while to the weak fell the bur lion and the vain Tho Strong lived anti fattened upon the labor the sorrow anti tho tears of the helpless With the gradual establishment of law these distinctions in outward evi dence became less marked uutil final ly in stern old Mwswchusetts aid III proud and brave and sweet Virginia there arose the God given and God blessed cry that alt men are born free and lJuala cry at first as weak as the ailof an infant but which hits so grown in vigor and acclaim that today its sentiment pervades the world That cry meant then mill it means now that every man is entitled to a free and equal chance in life the fruits of his own labor and hiS own ability without discrimination by law or otherwise Awl there in sister colonies Democracy born of God as old as Adam inherent in every human heart reared its organized body on American soil and through all the pregnant years since then in the gloom of disaster and defeat in the warmth and sunshine of victory and triumph it has lived un til in 1S9C at Chicago it reached in a Democratic platform the fruition of perfect expression anti as its chosen exponent put forward one who sits with us tonight and in whom weglory as did those of old in Jefferson and in Jackson 1Vom the first establishment of law until today the attempt has been to divert government from its true pur pose by the political abuses of law by which governments are administered The attempt has been to accomplish by law that which was once accomplished by force The attempt has been to so administer Kovernment by law as to attain the same ends attained when governunjnt was administered by force to place the burdens upon those least able to bear them to give the fruits to those least in need of them to divert the benefit of labor from those who la bored to hose who did not labor The growing intelligence and sense of man hood ill the masses have sought mote and more to prevent these political abuses of law and the contest between those seeking the abuses of the law and those seeking the uses of the law is in progress today as it has been for centuries Assaults upon the rights of the masses by political abuses of the law are uioro dangerous and more effective than assaults by force When threat ened by force you know your danger and know your foes and have the op portunity to conical in open fight but the assmili by abuse of law inptcret and silent it is mrdu by rmiies circuitous ami iillseon and when minpliwlied even home in lie laud isalike affected and none escape Before the ministered by force alone Millionaires have grown awl multiplied and now the promise is daily mantle that billion aires will soon bo here And yet ery until uho cares to think must know that no man in this country has ever accumulated as much as one million dollars unless by the did of the law which in its operation unjustly op pressively arid wrongfully took from one man time earnings of hits own labor and jjavo them to another Every mllliomdre in this land today ones his condition to the political abu ses of law all the concentration of wealth iu this land today results from the political abuses of law and time existence of millionaires and tliecbtil cen at ion of wealth mean and mean only tnat tho carninga of those who labor are t ktn from them by operation of law and presented to government whose death is recorded in history owed Ifs Heath to political abuses of law Uvcrv overt ment that has died owed its death to the fact that the time finally came when the same result vas unduly excited over the race for the nomination for Govenor between General Hardin and Senator Goebol They are both Rood Democrats loyal to their party honest anti capable and either would make an admirable Gov euor but they are only two cf many good Democrats who would make good rulers anti they should be so regarded There is no necessity for the friends of either gentleman to decry the merits of the man they are not for It will take a united party to elect either and there is no opportunity offered for any foolishness in Democratic ranks The larpeft number of Democrats should express their preference and that should be the end but it will not if heated passions should inject dissension and bitterness in the contest for tire nomination There are Democrats the Courier would prefer above other Dem ocrats but it will be its pleasure to heartily support any Democrat nominated by his party whose platform lie candidly indorses whether that Nomi nee be its first or last choice Espouse your favorites cause with warmth but dont let your zeal run away with your commou sense and put you in the ridiculous attitude of contemptuous disregard of tire opinions of others whose opinions rank as high in the world as yours Kentucky Democrats have the opportunity to carry the State by its legitimate majority anti nothing but a spirit of dogged determination to offen sively rule or ruin with the
