use of morphia and all admit I think that its employment hypoder DHcalry is peculiarly seductive I have seen the craving established so that it wag clearly manifest after the third daily repetition of the dose Opium in no other form and by no other method f administration will so speedily pro duce tiiis untoward resuit In a meas ure this would Feem due to the fact that the relationship of cause to effect is so clearly established In a moment one passes from intense ruffering to com plete relief and at the same time ex Derieacra such sensations that he realizes the process which in other methodsof exhibiting the drug is obscure or wholly occult Opium itself its tinctures extracts or elixirs may be given for weeks in oft related dose and their withholding may be followed by only slight depression and little raving for the definite thing But this cannot lie affirmed of the surest and speediest method of re leiving suffering The depression is greater ami the consequent craving is stronger I eel the more strongly with reference to the use of morphia by the hvpoderaaic needle because it is a vice for w hich the physicians is peculiarly responsible Opium smoking or eating may be first begun in curioeitv and the habit continued for the pleasure induced But the first in the long series of hypodermic injections is always given by the physician Unpleasant consequences in the way of nausea or active sickness are no safeguard to the patient though these may deceive him Often I have heard patients say There is aofear that I shall take morphine for its effects are so unpleasant Their very self confidence betrays them They soon discover that the repetition of the dose affords relief to the unpleasant feeling and that in one respect the bane is its own ami dote Opium taken by the mouth habitually hardly seems t shorten life except through the accident of an overdose sleepily taken Rut the hypodermic needle surely undermines the health as care in asepsis is always after a time neglected But I do not think we com ¬ pass the evil of the habit when we view it alone or chiefly iu its physical effects To me the greatest evil of the morphine habit is the perversion of the moral sense It obliterates in the victims mind the distinction between truth and falsehood right and wrong And here the evil may not be limited to the patient himself hut this may entail hardship and suffering on all those about him The first effect of opium in all its forms is stimulant and opium of all the narcotics except perhaps cannabis in dica particularly stimulates mental activity Imagination replaces observation and the judgment is in abeyance We see this often in cases of illness w here the drug has been exhibited in which there is no delirium except that induced hy the drug The patient will describe confidently his hallucinations as facts which areas definite as the images of alcoholic delirium 1 have often been told by patients of the illtreatment re ceived at the hands of nurse or some member of the family which statements I am morally sure were faise The only explanation is that vivid impressions on an excited imagination have fixed themselves like facts and that the perversion of judgment is due to morphia alone In the description of symptoms you cannot rely on the morphine takers statement Anticipated pain is so clear to the patients mind that the future is present and he declares himself a suf ferer before pain has begun nor if in actual pain can you trust his statement as to the leal amount of present dis tiess Nor can you trust his statement iu regard to the actual occurrences of his daily history Imagination supplies the place of fact and he dreams in a world ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ liatiioners Socely of oYal SLsSh igSSSJ ¬ ABOaWTEitY PURE guard against the drunkard As a witness the man who has been tipsv w ith drink will be stupid or forgetful hut not malicious in perverted remembrance The morphine taker will on the other hand go about his business irascible perhaps moody amiable to state a case or conduct an argument yet unable to hold the clear distinction between faeti and fiction If these propositions are true I believe that the challenging of tl e testimony of the user of morphine should be a thing which the court could sustain MOUNTAIN ROMANCE romantic atogf comes from Harlan county According to the narrator w hen John HMorgan Confederate was on the trail of George Morgan a Union man who was reheating from Cumber among the soldiers of land Gap in lsi of John Morgan was a handsome lov of seventeen from Carrol county Ky named Jesse laker Baker was serious Iy wounded in a skirmish on Clover fork of Cumberland river near Harlan Courthouse He was left Hy his com mand at a mountain cabin The owner of the cabin who was John Calleen a noted bushwhacker was absent with the Yankees The mother was in Lee a and there was no one at county home but Nannie the thirteen year old daughter She at once feil in love with Baker and set to work to relieve his pain Three months Baker lingered between life and death but his robust constitution finally mastered and he recovered He rejoined his command the war ended and he returned to his home at Ghent Carroll county where he married am Nannie Calleen was torg often Time rolled on Bakers wife died fortune went against him his business failed and be went to Hailan county where he engaged in the lumber busi He and Nannie Calleen met again and were married last week by Elder John Ballou A ¬ of a hunter and alwut six men known as strippers The time usually elected f jr taking the buffaloes was just after the had been grazing iu the morn ing had gone to the water and then re turn to t M nigh ground lying down to rest in bunches from twenty to a hun dred The hunter with the longest range ritle of the heaviest caliber he could obtain would fire from the leeward side so fir away that the crack of the ritle cnuh not he heard by the buffalo and beiny behind a hush or bunch of grass could not lie seen In that way ld kill from a dozen to a hundred a day w thout disturbing the herd to -¬ sisted of ideas And this brings me to the chief point that I wish to make a medico legal ane As you cannot without other reason than his own statement believe the habitual morphine taker with regard to himself nor as a narrator of events occuring in his daily life so his testimony excites the imagination but little and it benumbs the memory so that the de votee to alcohol may make a poor witness by stupid forget fuluess But the morphine taker clearly remembers his so called facts and mingles equally the truth and fiction of his narrative I would not believe a man addicted to the use of morphine on oath were there any reason to doubt his statement It might be truthful and it might equally be false I do not know it this has ever b en made a point in taking legal testimony but it might and should be in a criminal trial A mans character or his life may be sworn away by a witness by the use of rendered incompetent morphine to discriminate between truth and falseboood In any important matter under trial I believe that the habitual use of morphine by a witness should be a proper subject for investigation and that the character of a wituess as a witness is deserving of impeach neut if the morphine habit is found to have made him its slave It would not be so if the effect of opium were only to make a man Forgetfulness is a oblivious or forgetful venial fault and the stupid man is merely a poor witness not needfully a dangerous one But the mind of the man who uses the hypodermic syringe and gives himself morphine is clear often preternatural Iy clear It works logical- ¬ ly and granting impressions to be facts his conclusions drawn from given premises would be correct For this reason he is the more dangerous witness would not shake Cross examination him he believes his impressions correct His state ¬ aud his reasoning is logical n if at a ment won direti of the mission of American women and of womens I wish the girls now growing up clubs could see what a mission they might take upas American women Our own Amer ican women those of highest training ami possibilities are resioisible There is a great waste of the force w bich they should be in the nation either in foolish surface living of elegant form and pretense or in a struggle to assert an outside power Either way homes are drop- ¬ ping through while colleges and clubs llourish the best element is being dratted away Families such as should make noble increase or leaven and morally control it are dwindling to a minority in the community One passing word good natured not contankerous about clubs It is borne in upon me anxiously that women nowadays at least in and about the great
