spreading terror and dismay on all sidea The people rushed from their home into the streets houses rocked pictures fell from the walls thousands of panes of glass were broken everywhere crockery was shattered furniture was overturned chimneys crashed down upon the roofs and in some instances toppled over into the street below The cupola of the houses of parliament immediately after the explosion shook violently and collapsed with a crash which added still further to the feeling ol horror which has spread through Rome The general opinion was that Rome had been visited by an earthquake shock and that a second shock might reduce the city to ruins They fell upon their knees and prayed aloud Finally when something like order had been restored the real cause of the explosion became known It was discovered that the immense powder magazine at Pozze Pantaleo four kilometers from Rome had exploded and that it hod caused enormous damage The shock which caused Rome to tremble did not spare the Vatican That veneraU d pile si ook with the rest of the Roman buildings when the force of the explosion was felt and several of the famous historical stained glass windows of the old buildings were shattered The windows in the ancient Raphael chambers and the stained glass in the royal staircase presented to Pope Pius IX by the king of Bavaria were also seriously injured Signor Nlcotera minister of the interior stated in the chamber of deputies Thursday that forty eight persons were injured at the scene of the explosion and that about two hundred per sons in Rome were slightly hurt The minister of war said that there were 865 tons of powder in the magazine but that none of the explosive was new balestite there Stored It is surmised that the explosion resulted from slow combustion of the powder King Humbert received an ovation on visit ing the hospitals where the injured are being cared for Evening It is now learned that seven lives were lost The official report says that the explosion was purely accidental King Humbert who was heartily cheered whenever his presence became known to the populace and soldiery used his own carriage to convey wounded people to the hospital ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ the windows of the Popes library were broken and a number of precious relics were destroyed In addition many valuable panes of colored glass in the DrinclDal windows of St Peter Basilica were smashed to pieces The handsome stained glass window over the chair of St Peter was St At broken also Paul Church all the stained glass windows were damaged In fact the damage done at this church was so great that the building has been closed to the public while the debris is being cleared away and the work of temporary Much of the derepair inaugurated struction wrought by the explosion is irreparable as the valuable works of art which have been destroyed can of tho Many not be replaced stained glass windows which have been shattered are the works of celebrated artists who flourished hundreds of years ago and though in somo cases the windows can be replaced in many other cases their historical and artistic value is destroyed forever Many most valuable relics in the mon- ¬ astery of St Paul have also succumbed to the force of the explosion As al- ¬ ready stated some time must elapse before the full amount of the dam- ¬ age will be known as it will re- ¬ quire a personal visit to and inspec- ¬ tion of tens of thousands of artistic relics before the full story of the dis aster can be recounted It now trans- pirus that the pope had just concluded the celebration of lnw mass and was engaged in prayer when the explosion shook the Vatican building So severe was the shock that his holiness t ittered and would have fallen had not one of the servants in attendance sprang for-
