afternoon while the local fire brigade was engaged in ex Â¬ tinguishing a fire Mitchell Duffy from Edwardsville forced hit way in side the lines Upon refusing to get out the firemen turned the hose on A him number of Edwardsville men who were watching tte fire be- Â¬ came angry at this and jumping over the ropes attacked the firemen fiercely The latter stoutly defended themselves and in a short time no less than twenty five men were engaged in i d encounter Stones clubs wrenches and everything that could be used as a weapon were wielded The firemen were soon outnumbered and were on the point of beating a re- Â¬ treat when the police appeared and engaged at once with the rioters Meantime reinforcements arrived from Edwardsville and the battle became general The business men along Main street seeing the police beaten back by the Edwards- Â¬ ville people took a hand in the affray The fight was long and bloody and when at the end of an hour the Ed Â¬ wardsville forces were put to flight there were no less than twenty men badly injured on each side Broken heads noses and limbs kept the doctors of both towns busy for hours and it is feared that two or three may die from their notorious Ken tucky outlaw who gained a national reputation throutrh his connection with y the famous feud in Kentucky and who is credited with having killed at least twenty one men was removed secretly from the St Louis jail Friday night where he had been placed some two months ago for safeÂ¬ keeping when released from the peni tentiary at San Quentin Cal He was taken to the county seat of Maries county by the sheriff and six deputies all heavily armed to answer a charge of murder and it is said he was impa- cated in the killirjr of a deal mute named Meller in that county iti 1889 to conceal a robbery It b said friends had arranged for Howard rescue when the transfer was made Hearing of this the jailer at the Four Courts an- nounced that Howard would nut be started for Maries
