fever cases too which we have had under observation for some time and in whose sputa tubercle bacilli and elas- ¬ tic tissue have been repeatedly found We began on Friday tho 12th when by the kindness of Dr Billings we re¬ ceived tho fluid At first injections of the 1 lOcc of the 1 per cent solution were made On the following days 2 lOcc and then 3 10ce With the latter tho reaction has in each case been fairly characteristic Hourly observations have been made and as tho charts show there has been a rise in temperature within six or eight hours usually of ibroo or four degrees In one case thero was a slight chill The constitutional disturbance has not boon great and the patients have complained chiefly of restlessness sleeplessness and slight pains in the back and limbs In several instances the cough has been aggravated and tho expectoration increased In two cases of pleurisy one chronic and one acute the injections have been given for the purpose of diag- ¬ nosis The chronic case has flattening of the left side without any evidence of the disease of the lung itself Very definite reaction followed soon after the use of tho S lOcc injec- ¬ tion In the acute case no reaction fol- ¬ dollars or so of two thousand finds it much easier to provide his bride with a comfortable home than did tho youn men who were called uton to do the same thing twenty and thirty years ago In those days says tho New York Sun it was practically impossible for the youn man who hadnt any cap- ¬ ital to fall back upon to buy and fur ¬ nish a houso unless he could find a man of wealth to go sponsor for him IIo had to pay cash for every thing he got Now almost every thing or go without can bo bought upon the installment plan The and with practically no security result is that tho young married couple can start housekeeping fully equipped A moderate weekly or monthly pay- ¬ ment which doesnt make a largo hole in the Benedicts salary is sufficient at the end of a couple of years to make him the absolute owner of his house and its belongings Twenty years ago it was thought almost a disgrace to have a mortgage on ones house but it is quite a common thing now Lots can now be bought on payment of monthly sums as low as five dollars and the young hus- ¬ band will find many real estate concerns who will build a houso for him in tho neighborhood of New York the pay- ¬ ments on which wont be any larger than the rent which he would bo obliged to pay for a house or flat in town Then he wont havo any trouble in get ¬ ting furniture on credit for his house or for his flat if ho has decided to begin housekeeping in an apartment There aro plenty of furniture houses the ma ¬ jority of whose business is done on tho installment plan and be will find it the easiest matter in the world to get a few hundred dollars worth of furniture if ho will agree to pay up within a year The young man can obtain his tableware and crockery in tho same convenient way for the competition in tho trade has driven houses to hold out these in- ¬ to their customers ducements The young couples library can bo well stocked too on the installment plan with sets of the beat authors works if they only know where to go Watches and jewelry can be obtained on weekly or monthly payments a practice which has been in vogue for several years In fact there is no end to the articles which can bo bought on the installment plan provided they aro of a durable na- ¬ ture Thty remain the property of the seller who holds a mortgage until the last payment is made The attempt to apply the installment plan to the sale of clothing hasnt been a brilliant success because wearing ap-¬ parel is apt to be worn out beforo the time for the final payment comes Our business now said a large furni- ¬ ture dealer on Park row the other day is almost entirely on tho installment basis now Twenty years ago evory thing we sold was practically for cash but now tho house which doesnt sell on credit cant stay in the business very long Young married folks aro among our best customers and every day we are helping to start a newly wedded pair It is tho greatest in housekeeping boon to the young man of to day that without any outlay he is able to be master of his own house instead of tak ¬ ing his chances in a boarding house It would surprise you to see the number of persons in all walks of life who utiliio the installment system Evon men of moderate means prefer to buy very often on credit and use their ready money in their business Of course in this busi- ¬ ness we havo to bo pretty good judges of human nature but thero are rarely very few whom we refuse Risk necessarily accompanies tho installment system but where the volume of business is largo a house can afford to carry ac- ¬ counts for a long time Sometimes a person falls behind in his payments but if he has a good excuso to give us as sickness in his family for instance wo always allow him more time In fact thero is practically no limit set As long as a man shows an inclination to pay us we do not press him and some accounts run indefinitely Sometimes we look up a man or a woman who comes in to buy on credit but as a rulo we can rely on the judg ¬ ment of our salesmen who aro pretty ex- ¬ pert in sizing up the prospoctivo custom- ¬ ers Some of our most interesting call- ¬ ers are the young brides that aro to be who often come bravely in alone to se- ¬ lect tho furniture for the household They usually get along very well until it comes to giving their names Then they hesitate stammer and blush be- ¬ cause they dont know whether to givo their maiden name or that of their pros pective husband It usually ends with the young lady confiding to the sales man a complete explanation of tbo im- ¬ portant event with the time that the MetschinikofT has boon able to discover the secret of tho impo- ¬ tence of tho microbe to penetrate into tho blood These most recent investi- ¬ gations show that there are certain cells contained in the blood of all the higher animals termed phagocytes and identical with tho well known white blood corpuscles which are endowed with the power of independent motion and not only wander inside but even make their way outside the tissue and pursue de-¬ vour and digest any bacilli whether poisonous or not with which they come in contact This is in reality the true battle of life which although hitherto unknown and unobserved is constantly going on within tho body These phagocytes which are the watchful guardians of the body attack and annihilate tho bacilli before they can penetrate tho blood tissues So long as they remain on guard tho body it safe from attack but should they from any cause relax their vigilance then the invading army of parasites would pass into the system and destroy life either by the numerous mechanical lesions which it produces or by the poi- ¬ son which it secretes This apparently independent life of tho cell within the organism is one of tho most a King Her dresses on that occasion will not be particularly splendid and for that reason perhaps the event has not attracted the attention that such marriages usually do The truth is says the Atlanta Constitution that tho girl is a negress and the man she will marry is King of a tribe In Africa She is at present being trained for her future position in African court circles and is an inmate of the family of Rev John S Chester a clergyman who several years ago was a missionary to the west coast of Africa His wife became very fond of a young African girl while he was there and asked per- ¬ mission that she return with them when they left the dark continent Her father thinking the missionary was jok ¬ ing gave his consent but when the time came for parting wanted to be re leased from his promise Chester still persisted in his request and finally as no member of the tribe is allowed un- ¬ der pain of death to break a promise he bad to allow his daughter to depart The child was given the English name of Nellie instead of the unpronounce- ¬ able one she at first possessed and al ¬ though Chester already had children of his own she was treated as a member of the family Since Nellie has boon in the United States she has made great progress in her education and now at the age of fifteen is a model of scholar- ¬ ship and politeness She can speak French and English well and combines the winning ways of an American girl with the politeness of a Parisian Nellie looks much older than she really is and would be eligible to marriage if she were with her own tribe Since they came here the Chestors have kept up a correspondenoo with the parents of the girl who have been delighted with the progress which they have learned she is making under her instructors About a month ago they received a letter from her father asking that she be returned to Africa as the King wished to claim his bride The tribe of which she is a member is a polygamous one and Cbns ter refused to do this nnless the girl was to be the Kings only Queen The King who is charmed with the stories about Nellie has promised to do as asked and it is likely that within a few months Nellie will be sent back to mount a throne in her native land She has had several offers of marriage from negroes living near her home but she has refused them aU and the King will find her heart whole and fancy free African
