handled corn stalks for feeding and I never con- ¬ sidered the stover to bo very good un ¬ less fed early in the winter as it gets so tough and dry that cattle do not rel ¬ ish it Corn grown for feed and not for the grain I used to consider very good if cut on the green side wilted a day or two then set up in shocks about six feet in diameter and the tops carefully tied so as to keep out ail the rain and snow It will if run through a feed cutter be all oaten up and relished by cattle till about March After that it begins to get too dry and tough But I never saw fodder corn able to be kept in a barn or even in very big shocks if saved in tho state I have been used to having it becauso it would always heat and mold From the past winters experience with corn silage I still believe that corn fodder handled an I have mentioned is as good as silage till about March but when the weather begins to get warm the stock want a food liko roots and the silo gives a food very much like them and I then certainly prefer corn silage to dry fodder corn Toward spring tho cattle would not eat the straw but ate grain roots and silage These wero mixed together all winter and weighed to each animal also all the leavings A few hoad left some silage for a day others none no cattle were fed silago entirely and neither had I any corn fodder to feed so 1 have no figures for comparison I have fed the same silage every day with tho exception of parts of June and July to cattle of five different pure breeds numbering from twenty to thirty five hoad kept in the barn all summer and getting on an average over forty pounds or two feeds of silago a day and at noon somo kind of green food Tho latter was on wet days re- ¬ placed by hay and I am now August 23 still feeding a like amount of silage with a feed of green corn at noon I am positivo that with corn stalks saved in any other way that I know of but the silo I could never have kept the cattle in the shape they are in The little grass we have at this experiment sta-¬ tion is not very good some of the cattle turned out when it wa3 at its best though for only a few weeks lost in weight while nearly all kept in have shown a gain every montn Many look at tho silo with the ides that an animal must eat a certain amount of dry matter a day to get which amount by silago thoy would have to eat an enormous and impossible quantity Now all who have ever been to or come from the tight little isle well know what a lot of roots are fed there and The Gazette I remember once published a feeding trial made by Professor Brown Ontario Experiment Station of a heavy grain ration versus roots alone and the root fed lot did best I do not wish to infer that it is best to feed a large amount of watery food but it is certainly an advantage to feed a part sucoulent 1 also believe mat it is not a good plan to feed too much silage but as a part ration it is certainly a good and relished feed There is an old saying that A bushel of roots in the spring is worth two before Christmas and 1 think tho sauio may bo said of Points About Sowing snd Planting Grow Ins for Market A point upon which writers and grow- ¬ ers can not in all cases agree is that touching the relation between early seed sowing and early seed ripening In our gardening operations we have been of tbe opinion that it has been profitable for us to sow our seed early and have strong stocky plants for out door setting Last year con- ¬ firmed this idea as on our early plants we had fair pickings of ripe frul from Fords Early Advance by the firs of August Tbe seed was sown under glass the latter part of March the plants were taken from tho seed bed aud pricked into boxes 2 inches deep and 20 inches square They were planted about one inch apart each way and could grow in them two or throe weeks At this time they were again transplanted as a rule we planted thom in soil placed sevoral inches deep on the greenhouse bench inches Tho plants wero now put 2 apart each way and would remain about three weeks or until the first week In May when thoy were transferred to the boxes illustrated herewith which shows a tray of six compartments each of which hold3 the fact that it is located ¬ tramped by men and also by a horse tho one was covered with straw only the other with plank and weighted with stone The former had more waste while the waste of the latter was all weighed and was considerably less than ten per cent but I have no right to make public the figures If we had not been obliged to make a hole in the door there would have been even less The silage was considered by many who had silos of their own to be tho best they had ever seen but I saw better myself this winter the corn having been cut riper and also more heavily weighted CLEAN special advantage derived while more space and lumber are required When growing tomato plants for market we mako uso of a box like that at c which shows a box before the last side is nailed on the ends into which re set 13 plants and 6ell at wholesalo at SI 50 per dozen boxes the plants being put into them at the same time that the trays ore filled These boxes are easily and rapidly made by having the material cut so as to have only three pieces to put together This is done by having tho bottom and tvo sides in one piece the wood preferred being elm any tough wood will do V inch thick The ends are of Inches long Ji inch hemlocks cut 5 and 3Ji inches deep The piece for the bottom and sides is 7 inches in length and tho width includes 8 Inches for each side and 5 inches for tbe bottom a total width of U Inches In making these boxes the ends aro set up end- ¬ ways and one side fastened to each end piece tho ends are then laid upon their upperedge and tho bottom bent around the corners of tho ends and tightly nailed after which tho remaining side Is fastened Tho corners of the sides and bottom split enough to admit of the necessary drainage This makes a cbcap and quickly
