Turlington the Missouri Desperado John C Turlington the noted desper ¬ ado who has been confined in the county jail at Booneville Mo for the past six months effected his escape Saturday night in a clever manner After tho guards had given him his supper it had been their custom to allow him the froo dom of the jail for the purpose of exor ¬ cising until 8 oclock Deputy Sheriff Nicholson took him his supper at a oclock and left Turlingtons cell open so that ho might have his usual exercise As soon as he was left alone the desperado rigged out a dummy with the pillow and blan- ¬ ket from his bed and an old shirt Ho placed the dummy in the bed so that it would appear to be- lying with its back to the door Ho placed his supper dishes outside the door and arranged the cell for the night in its usual way and pro- ¬ ceeded to tho room in tho lower part of the building occupied by Deputy Sher iffs Nicholson and Garrettson There ho hid himself under a bod and awaited a favorable opportunity to make his es ¬ cape which presented itself when tho two deputies went into tho room prepared for their supper and went to tho dining room Then Turlington emerged from his place of concoalmont and escaped by the window which was only a few feet from the ground When Nicholson went to Turlingtons cell to Bocuro the prisoner for the night he found the supper dishes outside the door and mistaking the dummy for his sleeping charge locked and bolted the door Turlingtons clover ruse was not discovered until 9 oclock Sunday morn- ¬ ing when the guard attempted to arouse the dummy for breakfast Tho alarm was given and the search for the fugitive was begun At eight oclock Sunday night one of the searching party returned and reported that no trace of Turlington had been found except perhaps throo horses which had been stolen during tho night at different points on the road to Jefferson Cit3 It is thought that the fugitive may have taken this means to get away Turlington was regarded as one of the most desperate men in tbo Southwest He was the murderer of Ex Sheriff franmcr and was a con ¬ fessed train robber The former crimo was committed after he had been ar ¬ rested at Sedalia for shooting at a rail- ¬ road brakeman A confederate supplied him with a revolver and he attacked Sheriff Cranmor one night when tho latter had taken his 6tipper to him He shot the sheriff in tho breast
