Â¬ enced a reign of darkness rain a ad ter- Â¬ ror Saturday night and it was not until yesterday broke clear and pleasant that the bad effects of the nights tornado could be learned Daylight showed that one hundred buildings were wreekod by the tornado Strange to say no fatali ities have thus far resulted from the ter-Â¬ rible catastrophe although mtny aro severely injured and sevcnl may not recover The list of tho wound- Â¬ ed is quite long but those whose intwenty juries are severe number The tornado first struck on Tiornton street in the southwestern po tion of the city and passed along the southern outskirts Its path extends for nearly two miles through tho city limits and shows that the whirling funnel of the cloud at the several points roe high enough in the air to pass comparatively harmless over buildings directly in its course Chirkens rats and cats lie dead along the tornados path and two horses were killed outright People al- Â¬ most universally sought refuge in the collars ahd in many instances the houses above them were blown cleanly from their foundations leaving the people unharmed Prof II V Egbert of Buchtol College Professor of Astronomy and Meteorology who is the local representative of the Signal Service at Washington was an cye witnesi of the tornados work He says the tornado was of the shape of an incomplete in- Â¬ verted cone with a mass of ug y black clouds above it whirling very rapidly He computes that the cone wa travel- Â¬ ing at the rate of a mile in fifteen sec- Â¬ onds and says that the entire work was accomplished in thirty seconds Fkankiin Pa May - A terrible cyclone passed over the southern part of this county Saturday evening about 5 oclock Two people Noah Jackson and wife were killed outright and a largo number of persons dangerously injured The storm was general throughout the county but the deadly cycle ne only about three hundred feet wide extend- Â¬ ed about twenty five miles Almost every thing in its path wan demol- Â¬ ished and trees were uprocted and bouses and barns completely demol- Â¬ ished In one instance a house containing an invalid was struck and the bed containing the sick man was lifted up bodily and carried out into the yard whore it fetched up against a tree The sick man was badly injured A large number of cattle wore ki led Tho path of the cyclone extended irom near tho county line to the Allegheny river No trains have arrived on the Allegheny Valley railroad since Saturday evening on account of slides and t bad wreck about five miles south of this city where the cyclone struck the river St Lofis May 2 Several violent storms in the form of tornadoes have occurred in different parts of North Missouri with in the past two days and a large amount of property has been de- Â¬ stroyed and several persons killed In Harrison County a number of houses and barns were demolished and a large amount of farm property destroyed Wm Wilson and his two small children were blown away with his house and killed and several persons injured In Gentry County more than twenty buildings were destroyed and Mrs Nathan Green was killed Cattlo and hogs were killed and a good deal of farm property as well as crops greatly injured Five or six dwellings and several outbuild- Â¬ ings were blown away south of Mem- Â¬ phis Mo fences carried away and or chards swept down but nobody killed Remains of Senator Beck at the Iulpit Lexington Ky May 8 The Con Â¬ gressional train bearing the remains of Senator James B Hock with pall- Â¬ bearers and escort reached this city at 1 oclock yesterday afternoon and was met by a larce concourse of citizens The caskt was placed in a hearse and escorted by the Congressional party proceeded to the Southern Presbyterian Church where it was deposited on a dais a rich profusion of rare flowers being tastefully placed about it The face of the dead was exposed and thou- Â¬ sands of people by the passed casket to take a last look at the well known features The face is slightly turned to the loft shoulder but the long journey from Washington has not otherwise displaced any thing The casket will remain in state in the church until noon to day when short ser Â¬ vices will be held the pastor of the Southern Presbyterian Church Rev Dr W F V llartlett officiating and then the dead Senator will be laid bo side his wife and children in the Lexington beautiful and historic eemetery The services tho at church will consist of music a prayer and reading of scriptures and at the grave the Episcopal burial services will be recited All the lifo far exceeds the first estimate In the build- Â¬ ing were many very aged women somo of whom bad not left their beds for months and others who from weakness of mind were incapable of finding their way out of tho building in tho midt of the confusion and excitement which prevailed It is now believed that a number of theso perished and this belief is strengthened by the dis- Â¬ covery of a body yesterday at some distance from the department occupied by the imbeciles There are several feet of ashes and debris in the cellar and the probabilities are that when they are removed a number of bodies will be found Many of tho old people bad no relatives an I they aro only brought to iniadby the recollection of the keeper and their companions so it is impossible as yet to say who a id how many are missing The building burned very rapidty as if pitched ard tarred and witi great fierceness Tho fire was intensely hot and the belief exists that some of tho bodies were so completely incinerated that no trace of them can be found The following are known to have been burned besides those mentioned in previous dispatches Mary Vosburg Olselic Roxie Mallory Norwich and Julia ffunt Norwich One insane woman was captured near Plymouth some twelve miles distant last night She was half clad and be- Â¬ wailing the loss of her home One of tho imbeciles was seared into her senses by tho fire and escaping from the burning room by a window reached the roof and crawled along the ridge board and aroused the keepers wife from slumber thus saving her life On Monday the coroners jury will begin the taking of testimony and it is not expected that the full number of those missing will be known till then as the officials are very reticent The insane paupers will bo brought to Utica to day and preparations are bing made in tho State Hospital to receive them ROASTED TO DEATH Another Asylum Horned Down and Ten Inmates Possibly More Perish Itka H Y May 9 The larger portion of tho Chenango County Buildings which for fifty year past have been located at Preston about six miles from Norwich were destroyed by fire Wednes day night about midnight and ten of the inmates possibly more were burned The buildings destroyed were the asylum in which there were ibout eighty inmates and the pauper houso and idiot ward in which there were a number of inmates Both were three story wooden buildings in good repair having winga of two stories in height They stood side by side a drive way separating them They were valued at 825000 and Insured for 19000 and are a total loss The horrible part of tho disaster was tho burningof the ten female idiots who w ere penned in theircells and were roasted alive The fire started in this portion and as the inof the main buildin mates were asleep and no sounds were heard it is probable that the smoke and gasses smothered them before they felt the pain of fire The origin of tho fire was probably the smoldering sparks of a slight fire Beck has been deposited in the grave and he famous as he was suffers the ommon lot The members of the Fayette Bar met in the circuit court room at 10 oclock with members of the bar of tho other counties composing the common pleas and circuit districts Eulogies were pronounced upon the dead Senator and lawyer by his old friends Hon R A Buckner and Congressman Wm C P Breckinridge They were touching tributes to tho great qualities of their departed friend Resolutions of an eloquent and touching character were passed At noon those gathered at the court house formed in line Headed by the United States Senators Senator Blackburn and Congressman Breckinridge leading the way they marched to the church where ushers di- Â¬ rected them to seats The remainder of the church was filled with the throng of people eager to era boat all that was passing The coffin was covered with flowers and masses of them were placed all around It was a most elaborate floral display and as costly as beautiful Many of the offerings came from Washington When all were seated the choir sang the hymn When our hearts are bowed with woe when our bitter tears shall flow after which Rev W F V Bentlett the pastor of the First and arose Church Presbyterian read a chapter from the Bible reciting the parable of the talent At the close the choir sang the hymn Abide with A prayer me for the day is far spent
