storage dam hu ill across the Haasa yanipa river by the Walnut irove Water Storage company two years ago at a east of 9900000 gave way yesterday morning under the pressure of the heavy flood and swept everything be- ¬ fore it Forty piersons are known to have lost their lives As the town of Wickenburg thirty milm below the dam was on the same stream great feiirs are entertained for the safety of that town but as there is no biographic communication no news is obtainable of its fate The service dam of the company is lo cabil lifteen miles slow the reservoir and fifteen miles of Hume just approaching coinpleton was also swept away al the company lias spent over 800000 on the enterprise of steerinc the water The hydraulic mining macnine had arrived ami they expected to com ¬ mence operations next week The dam which held the water back was 10 feet long at the base and 400 feet at the top It was lio feet thick at the base and ten ftct at the top forming a lake tlmt miles in length by three fourths of a mile wide and 110 feet ill en Lieut Brodie in charge of the work was absent at Plireuis superintending the shipment of the machinery to the works and was roved Of those people drowned at Wickenburg by the bursting of the dam across the liassayanipa river near here is not deli- A numlier of houses nicely known were certainly carried away and many were drowned but owing to the lack of telegraphic communication the exact re ult of the disaster cannot be ascer tained The ominous rush of water from the broken dam gave a warning to the people of the valley that many took ad vantage of and had time to escape Rain lias In en falling heavily for several days past and the dam was split from top t bottom by the force of the waters Up to the present time no further details is to loss of life can be learned but it is thought that the number drowned is ver great Use properly loss is immense Due to Carelessness SAX Francisco Feb 24 Engineer Luther Wagner has given some detaiLs of the construction of the great storage dam acroai Hossayampa river which show Hint this disaster like thai at Johnstown was according to him due to carlessncss and meanness of the New York corporation that built it Wagner was called in to report on the dam alout a year and a half ago It was to have been faced with ston eleven feet thick at the base and four feet at the top and tilled with loose rock and made water ¬ tight with Wooden sheathing Jt was about dene when Varner in spected it and he found the stoic had v idled in carelessly and was high in the center making the structure unstable The junction of sheathing and lied rock was intended to lie secured by thick layers of Portland cement but this work wasnt well done because of the cost of getting cement to the works Thus a dangerous crevice was formed at the base of the dam and leakage was heavy being 141 inches with o feet of water in the dam The lumber Wag- ¬ used was also full of knot holes ner advised the discharge of the con- ¬ tractors and engineers as he regarded them as worthless but this was not done The company however acting on his advice cut large waste away and strengthened the weak places
