country the lodge then having a mere handful of members took on new life and made a fresh start In 1870 it had a membership of 79 and by the following year numbered 85 From 1871 until 1880 it fell to 26 Without intending anr reflection upon any one I may remark that this heavy decrease has been explained by the fact that for several y ears the ballot box had not been as closely guarded as it shojld have been and much unworthy The consequence material was admitted was that many of the best members with drew very unwisely I think refusing to hold membership with those whom they to the order considered discreditable Thc should have stood at their posts and exercised their undoubted right of oting Â¬ Â¬ Â¬ Â¬ The objectionable members were final I weeded out and once more a new start was made From that time 1880 to the present the lodge has prospered to an un usual degree and we now number S6 Madison Lodge has contributed two Grand Masters to the Grand Lodge tht late E W Turner who was also Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodgt ot the State and our present Grand Master A J Reed wlio enjoys the distinction ot being the youngest man ever elected ti that high and honorable position She has also furnished three Grand Marshals the late R E Little D 1 Aimer and W B White the last named gentleman filling that office at the present time Without any disposition to boast or parade our charity before the public but simply that you may know by what right we claim to exist permit me to refer to this feature of our order briefly From its organization until 1870 no systematic record was kept of the sick benefits and charities dispensed therefore the amount is not known From tSo until the present time the lodge has paid out for these purposes 2359 divided as follows For the relief of brothers 1029 r the support of widowed families and education of orphans 849 for the burial of the dead 340 and for incidental charities 141 This is not a large sum only about 13 a j ear but eternity alone can reveal how many homes have been made happier and how many hearts lighter for it This is independent of the individual charities oi each member I might occupy much ot your time by complimentary references to the many good men of our city and coun- Â¬ ty wlio have been connected with our lodge and it would afford me real pleas ure to do so had I the time at my disposal You will allow me however to remark in honor of the memory of one of your best citizens that to hinv more than to anv other person is due the succeW of our Widows and Orphans Fund in its incipi ency I refer to the late William S Hume This fond now amounts to 5000 The Daughters of Rebekah under whose auspices the supper is given on this occasion is composed of the wives widows sisters and daughters of Odd Fellows It is w hat we call a side degree The lodge here wa organized a few months ago by our active and zealous Grand Master They have a membership of about twenty and are working harmoniously and beautifully in the inter- Â¬ est of the order The features of their lodge are similar to those of Odd Fellows lodge proper They pay one dollar a week sick benefits to members and render all needed attention possible in cases of sickness The dues are trifling I believe only five cents per week In conclusion let me say and I wish to impress the truth upon some of our mem Â¬ bers that an Odd Fellows lodge is not a substitute for the church All of its ntes and ceremonies combined with the most liberal charity will not avail to save a soul fiom sin It can do nothing more nd claims to do no
