fourteen miles South f Richmond on the Kentucky Central Railroad There are numbers who have visited the school ami admired Howard Hal the spacious Tabernacle the massive Ladies Dormitory and the splendid Lincoln Hall Yet tliere are those who have never attended a Berea commencement We were among the derelict number until last Wednesday June 22ud which was the 21st annual commencement We can assure those who have steadfastly re mained away that the loss is theirs hi the forenoon of last Wednesday three special trains left Richmond for Berea carrying more than six hundred people Upon reaching the grouuds the exercises hail already begun and everybody aud his sister and his cousin Two thou Â¬ aud his aunt were present sand five hundred people were seated In the mammoth Tabernacle and pro Â¬ bably three thousand were scattered nbout the grouuds on the outside Not fewer than two thousand horses were hitched on the wooded campus There were horses willi addles tliere were hordes that had brought one person and horses that had brought two per Â¬ sona aud three persons aud even four persons Tliere were horses iu harness and they had drawn carriage- - and buggies and spring wagons and tliere were horses witti gear that had drawn heavy road wagons and great farm wagons anil carts And those vehicles had hauled any number of persons from two to seventeen we counted seventeen persons getting out of oue farm wagon The people w ere from every where from the cities and towns and villages and they were from the mountains and the pennyrile dees trick and from the Blue meres and broadcloths were abundant As to shoes there were brogans calfs kids morocco and patents Booths and refreshment stands were about lliecanipu and private basket dinners were numerous But let us look inside On the right was a solid array of colored people on the left were whites and iu the centre they were smartly mixed On the ros- Â¬ trum the seats were filled with whites but hack ofit were thestudents who took part in the exercises and they were black and white male and female In fact the catalogue exhibits 431 students of whom 251 are colored 180 white 220 males 205 females saloon One orator Noble Hill of California-declarehimself a Socialist but claimed that tlie Declaratiou of Independence aud the Constitution of the United Slates are socialistic Instruments Miss Lamson inveighed against socialism President Fairchiid presided but the famous John G Fee the founder aud preserver of the school was on the rostrum and seemed never happier than during the exercises
