J- I li K BELL BROTHERS commenting upon the general ity of the Bell Brothers we shall make some reference to other con nected and contemporary families One hundred and thirteen years ago six Bell Brothers came from Virginia to Kentucky They were William Josiah Samuel Robert Ihomas and James James the youngest brother born in 1778 lo cated in Louisville Ky where he remained several years and then re turned to Virginia where he lived and flied Samuel the third of the Bell brothers born in 1773 located at Glasgow Barren County Ky which county was organized in 1792 Samuel never married He lived and died at Glasgow William Josiah Robert and Thomas Bell came to Muhlenberg connty in 1797 in the organization of the county Villiann Bell the oldest of the Cell brothers horn in 1768 died 186 was one of the first magis trates of the county and acted a of the first associate Circuit Judges of the county He the county in the Legislature of the State in 1814 He was mar tied in Virginia to Sarah Nighting and to that union were born and reared nine children six boys and three girls The boys were Samuel who married Mary Bell the daughter Bell to them were born two sons and one daughter John and Joseph the one daughter Mary The family moved to Illinois where Bell died His wife married James Smith he died and she married Rev Williams Anslem Bell a son of Judge Bell bora in 1802 married Rebecca Robertson daughter pi David Robertson To that union were born and reared four girls and one son Sarah Josephine Cintha En IfDirirfi tkeboy died in early manhood William Bell Jr son of Judge Bell born In 1807 died in 1867 first married Lucy Smith who died in 1851 She was a daughter of William Smith and to that union was bora one son Thompson who was born in 1834 and now in his seventysixth year and is the only living monu ment to rcpreseat the name of the Bell brothers in the county Three girls Sarah Susan and Ellen Bell Jrs second wife was the widow of Aaron Smith her maiden name was Elizabeth Poole daughter of Joseph Pools who was the father of Ferdinan Reason Henry Pine ney and David Poole all dead To William Bell Jr and Elizabeth Poole was born and reared one daughter Elizabeth who now sur vives Jesse K Bell a son of Judge Bell left the county when a young man went South and became a steamboat captain and run the riv ers from New Orleans to Louisville for many years we think he died in Louisville James and Wylie Bell sons of Judge Bell both in the western part of the Stale near Paducah Wylie Bell never married James Bell raised a family perhaps some ef them yet survive Elizabeth Bell a daughter of Judge Bell married James Tag Bart a man of prominence once surveyor of the county also reprc seated the county in the Legislature in 1838 To this union was born and reared four sons and three daughters Liza Ann Elvira Eliza beth William James Thorny and Jesse William married Elizabeth Craig James Jr married Anne Poole daughter of Joseph Poole Thomas married Mary Lee Jesse went to Kansas Liza Ann married Harvey Robertson Elvira married Henry Velbora Elizabeth married Parks Dockins The Taggart Bros of Depoy are sons of James Taggart Jr Liza Ann Bell daughter of Judge Bell married Abraham Vaught they left the county at an early date Mary Bell daughter of Judge Bell married David a son of Britton Willis they moved to Arkansas where they lived William Hunter who lived and died in Ohio county Sally a daughter of Josiah Bell born in 1833 James Campbell and to this union were born and reared one s n Shelby two daughters Mahala and Sally The Campbell family also moved to Illinois Muhala the youngest daughter of Josiah Bell was born in 1811 died in 1886 and was the last to survive of the Bell brothers children She was married ID 1 homas L
