street north Greenville to hear a sermon delivered by parson Pevelcr but sickness prevented his appearance and Judge Quill Price was called on to make a talk an ex tract of which we here give After the preliminaries Judge Price arose anti said in pan My friends we arc greatly disappointed in not having the presence of parson Pev eler on this occasion and to listen to an able Thanksgiving sermon However permit me to offer a few scattering thoughts in my imperfect manner in regard to Thanksgiving day The earliest Thanksgiving in America was kept by the Pilgrim fathers at Plymouth in 1621 and was repeated often during that and the ensuing century Congress re commended days of Thanksgiving annually during the revolution and in 1784 for the return of peace as did President Madison in 1815 Washington appointed such a day in 1789 after the adoption of the Constitution and in 1795 for the general benefit and of the nation Since 1863 the Presidents have always issued proclamations appointing the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving day The 24th day of this month is set apart by the President and Govern or of Kentucky as a day for thanks giving or as a day of thanks for life and the condition of things The question arises can we feel thankful and appreciate the design and intention of the day set apart Is there anyone within the bounds of our great state who has nothing to be thankful for One that lives in a country and nation with all its diversifications of climate soil and scenery a country whose great mouBfaibrangcs waterfklls yast K valleys and a woderfl ot fruits and flowers a country of ev erlasting and beauties of eternal snow a country surface is underlaid with a rich and bountiful supply of mineral wealth a country supplied with all the adaptations facilities and requirements to make a people prosperous and happy Can we feel thankful that we have been born in the best of countries and at the best of times that our eyes have been opened in a country where the father of mercies has been pleased to condense his blessing Can we teel thankful that we in herit the hemisphere of freedom the land of human liberties were we can enjoy the rights of man while some of the unfortunate human race inherit poverty and slavery Can we feel thankful that we live in a climate temperate salubrious and healthful while some of our fellow men are suffering the extreme heat of the burning zones others are freezing beyond the infld ee of be nignant rays Can we fee thankful that we are heirs of private public and social benefits and inherit a country illuminated by the rays of science and civilization blessed by a wonderful advantage of learning and literature and all educational advantages while some of the hu man race are groping their way be neath the clouds of moral and darkness and are ignorant of the blessings we are enjoying Should we not rejoice and feel proud of our homes and callings in life Neighbors should rejoice with neigh bors for their surrounding condition and the comforts of their homes Every person that is enjoying health should feel thankful and proud whether they own anything or not as exist in a country that sur rounds them with everything neces sary to render them prosperous and happy if they have Such aspirations Our country was not intended as a place for people to starve and to lead a miserable life of bickering and quarreling it was intended as a place for people to live happy and prosperous being a country blessed by Providence Nature and Grace The unfortunate and those that are afflicted
