patents not yet filed but in the course of preparation it is estimated that the number of Edisons is close to 2000 THE first use of an aeroplane for carrying express matter was made by the Wright brothers on Novem ber 7th when one of their biplanes piloted by aviator Phil O Pamalee left the Wrights aerodrome at Simons station near Dayton 0 at 1045 a and landed at Colum bus 0 65 miles away 66 later Strapped to the passengers of the biplane were two bundles of silk weighing about 100 pounds and valued at SSoo A stock Wright biplane fitted with a 30 horsepower 4cylinder motor was used and owing to the favorable wind of 20 miles an hour velocity the aeroplane actually covered 62 miles across country in 57 minutes Pannalec therefore made an average speed of 65miles per hour and set up a new record for a cross flight This flight demon strates how useful the aeroplane will yet become for the carrying of express and mail matter Post masterGeneral Hitchcock after a night with Count De Lesseps at Baltimore expressed his intention of beginning experiments in mail carrying by aeroplane at once COUNT LEO TOLSTOI social phil ospher reformer literateur died at Astopova Russia at 5 oclock last Sunday morning from exposures incident to a journey afoot in his ef forts to spend his few remaining dy alone when he realized that death was near He was one of the great characters of his nation and of the time and has left behind a renewed religion of brotherhood which aside from a willingness to understand God is probably the only really important thing in the world v The thing which made Tolstoi the most dramatic man of his was that when he had reached the pinnacle ot celebrity he turned suddenly and went down into thevalley again In one day as it were he gave over the glories of this world and took upon himself its penalties which he bore both vicari ously and in fact He preached brotherhood service selfdenial P nUn I oa I Kplnd will be Itit lint for sUed I FnM Mmp wm t rernhk4
