October Precisely considered it may not be Indian summer but there comes a time when the ghost of August re turns to the woods n lay when the i rowdy wind ceases to worry the brush scatter the leaves and plain in the pines It falls a dead calm and the lakes arc mirrors re fleeting every tree along their shores and without the twinkle of a wave The season has advanced The leaves arc falling A stiff windwill rip them from their slender and the ground already is i carpeted The most brilliant colors have faded The approach to the dull brown and the scar and yellow is rapid The scrub oak clings tenaciously to its foliage and it to its splendors and here and there a sheltered maple Haunts its but the birches arc being to every gust of wind that hits them The woods are capitulating Their Lent is at hand Soon only the evergreen will relieve the utter desolation of bare branches and charred trunks and stumps of burned grandfathers of the forest At such a time a halt is called on the progress of in the warfare of the seasons The vanguard of winter rests on its arms the rear guard of summer stops in its retreat Probably the pickets of the two forces become chummy and swap supplies and stories The wind the Cossack of the invader is held in leach and the sunlight comes through an atmosphere so clear as to act as a lens The op posite shores stand out with such distinctness that you are tempted believe If a squirrel moved a mile away you could follow it A perfectday There is not a cloud in the sky not a ripple on the lake not a movement in the brush not a sound in the woods It companion stands black and dead The ghost of summer is alluring not terrifying Evening comes with a glow of color There are no clouds to re flect the light and pile wonder pn wonder The sunset as befits the end of such a day is subdued A crimson at the horizon is reflected in a crimson in the lake A light blue above the crimson is reflected in a light blue in the lake Against the crimson at the horizon are the now indefinite forms of the trees on on the farther shore Indefinite forms are reflected darkly in the lake A line of silver running across the water betrays a vagary in the light To the east is a glow soft colors Gradually growing in strength just above the crimson at the horizon is the crtsent moon Shades fade and change The silver line disappears The darkly reflected forms little knowledge and n little carefulness People shunKl be instructed that if on opening a can or gloss of any preserved food the color or taste is at questionable the food should be consigned without n minutes loss of time to the garbage can Ptomains arc the products of de composition in food and arc brought about by means of bacteria Some of these bacteria are quite harmless while others arc of all degrees of venom some of them capable of producing only n slight attack of indigestion or complaint others meaning painful and speedy deathWhen bacteria arc found in bottled or foods of any description it is certain that they obtained their entrance in one of two ways they were cither nl ready in it when the can was scaled or they got in through some leakage of air because where air teachers during the association last Saturday atones for the seeming neglect in days gone by it atones for the cool indifferent stares which have met the stranger teacher heretofore it atones for the long noon hours of the Institutes of the past when the outoftown teacher saw only closed doors and when the call of the street or that of the ever benevolent court house alone was heard Yes all the indifference of the past was forgiven Saturday when the basement of the new school building after having been turned into a great dining hall in which decorated tables groaned beneath the weight of good things to cat was thrown open to the teachers association which had been in session at the court house No one who partook of that sump tuous dinner who drank a cup of that steaming chocolate or coffee after their long cold morning drive can ever forget the ones who so liberally contributed to their coni fortWoman Is at her best when acting as hostess and on this occasion the Greenville teachers were more than charming in their dainty aprons and caps Even the old maids seemed to have had a drink from the foun tain of youth as they flitted here and there seeing that each guest was well cared for In this homelike social dinner the people of Greenville showed by their attitude that they were in sympathy with the country teacher and if there is anyone on earth who needs sympathy and prayers it is the school teacher who must strug gle alone day and put forth every effort to mold the raw in his care into a finished model This attitude on the part of the patrons in any district is gratifying It is an inspiration to any teacher to know that his efforts are appreciat ed Never before or at least since the writers rememberancc and that has been long were the teach ers shown such hospitality in Green villeIt is a great thing far the country teacher that the wave of educational enthusiasm at Muhlcnbcrg county May it sweep onward until a bond of sympathy heretofore unknown shall unite the teacher and the parent in tual struggle for the welfare of Ken tuckys children The people of Greenville will ever be held in the highest esteem by the teachers for this one act of and if their doors arc closed in the future this one cordial recep tion will make up for all deficiences that may follow It will long be remembered as one of the most pleasant occasions ever enjoyed at Greenville by the teachers AN OIISEKVEK SlatonCook Wedding Monday One ot the best kept wedding secrets that has been known here was made public Monday afternoon when Miss Mary Madeline Slaton and Mr
