govern ment investigators who declare that meat can now be preserved a year or ao in storage without danger of putrefaction but what will this same public say to the statement of the Italian experts who have dis covered means of mummifying the fresh killed beef or sheep so that not even ice is required to keep the meat in a perfectly normal and luscious condition in a moderate temperature The procedure described sounds so elaborate that one can scarcely believe it will be feasible for prac tical purposes First a simple so lution of 100 parts of water 25 parts of common salt and 4 parts acetic acid is prepared Then when the beast is killed the veins are drained of blood and the solution is injected into the system in its steadThe original experiments were made at Turin and the animals upon were hung up in an temperature of 6x degrees Fahrenheit and allowed to remain there for two months and a half Then the creatures were skinned cut up and prepared for the scien tific revel Who the devotees were that indulged in the repast is nut generally known as but all tests showed that the flesh was tender palatable and in respect as good as fresh meat if not superior It is declared that there need be no time limit to alive powers of this exceedingly cheap and simple solution Frilled Paragraphs The fortune hunter is apt to find scarce Flour by any other name would smell as wheat The average man is a cheerful giv er wlien asked for advice A girl becomes conceited about the time she has her first beau Most cable news is fresh even after passing through salt water Its only when scalds depends upon the area of body face that has been burned the and the depth of tissue that has been destroyed For example a burn covering a limited surface of the leg or arm although of consider able depth is often Icssjserious than a larger but more superficaLburn of the trunk head or neck and this is especially true of chifdren who are more susceptible titan grown persons to the shock which accompanies extensive burn Everyone is familiar with the simple redness of the skin produced by a slight burn and with the blister that follows if the burn be a little more severe In such slight no tissue is actually destroyed and no scar results The redness is caused by congestion of the small bloodvessels of the skin and the blister by still further congestion producing a leakage of the fluids the blood into the upper layers of the skin v For such slight burns a coating of or vaseline covered with clean cottonwool is the simplest ntthe 11 t p a J J even J et exceedingly ever i theprcserv J may be picked with a has been passed through a flame several times to kill all possible germs and the fluid allowed to escape but the loose skin should be left in place as it forms a better protective than any artificial substanceThe painful form of burn is that which extends only as far as the deeper layers of the skin and scorches the sensitive nerve endings which arc there situated If the burn penetrates beyond this point the nerve endings arc destroyed and the pain consequently much lessened but the loss of tissue is of course much greater healing is slower and the scar is more noticeable In giving first aid to one suffering from a severe burn especially if there is a large surface involved it is important first to pay attention to the general condition of the patient Paleness and shivering a feeble and fluttering pulse cold extremities and perhaps an appearance of little sign of suffering arc all of severe may produce so profound an im pression upon the system and vital centers as to prove rapidly fatal unless met with prompt In such a condition much can be done before medical help arrives by keeping the head low giving suitable stimulants warm blankets and applying hot water bottles to the hands and feet TilE RATE TO CHICAGO REDUCED Slonon Route Announces New Schedule- of Fares One Way and Round Trip The Monon Route announces that it will henceforth sell tickets European towns of cconimical habits have been complaining because they are obliged to light their streets all night for the benefit of a few belated citizens and have been trying to discover a method whereby the the citizen who needs to have his pathway lighted in the small hours of the night shall pay the costs him self On one of the streets of a small German town such a system has actually been put into operation The street is a little over half a mile long and is provided with nine lamps At each end of the street is a pennyintheslot machine and whenever anyone wishes to light up the street he has merely to drop in a ten pfennig piece which turns on the current for twelve minutes This allows him ample time to walk the length of the street The street is normally lighted until 10 oclock idea was con ceived and developed by persons be longing to the Democratic party an idea thought to be up with the spirit of the age This idea divided the Democratic party into two prongs The party became forked each prong running in opposite directions one division organized under the name of the Populist or Peoples Party It was thought to be the progressive wing and the principles and policies set forth and advocated by the Populist party gave to the nation much greater extent and con trol of the management of the affairs of the people When the Populist financial philosophers of the new school of politics hall gotten to gather to philosophize and to di scipline a model that would represent the new discovery that was being made by the learned pro fessors throughout the nation the chief of whom was Prof W J Bryan of Nebraska a very eminent and learned financial philosopher who was thoroughly conversant with all the financial system and money usages of the world Prof Bryan had studied Pomroya works on po litical economy and his digest on national finance Prof Bryan took up the new idea to make thorough investigation in his financial labora tort He had constructed at Neb an observatory where he mounted a powerful magnifying silver finished 16 to i horsepower telescope for his observations and thro this telescope he could easily survey the financial firmament of his country and had a splendid and entire view of all the important plan ets and their orbits He made some astounding discoveries which he published in a pamphlet and dis tributed them among the people which caused great excitement and enthusiasm throughout the nation Prof Bryan stated that he had a splendid view of all the financial planets and that there had been considerable change since the dis He sam that the Greenback and Silver planets both seemed to be revolving around the Gold center as satellites that the Greenback planet was not near so large as it was in the days of Pomroy years ago and that altho the Silver planet was but a satellite ot the Gold center tie was of the opinion from the signs of the financial firmament that the planet Silver was rapidly approach ing the earth and would soon be around it and would come between the earth and the planet Gold and that the planet Gold would emerge into an annual eclipse and would commence to recede from the earth until it would sink below the horizon that this eclipse would be visible throughout the United States and if such should take place which he had every reason to believe and none to doubt there would be good times on the earth and peace among the people Prof Bryans faith was so strong in discoveries and predictions that he with other able silver professors set about to construct and discipline a model to represent the idea and theory of the new discovered sys tem of finance This model was constructed entirely of silver mater ial including the axles pivots sockets drjyewheel and all the running gear Tfte model was shaped and fashioned at St Louis in the Tke Pacific Miitiljs Special Iitn iMctwy Offer The Inclgc Monthly of Portland Oregon is a bcaitjifully illustrated npontbly which gives very full constituted the committee of the whole and to get a patent and have it that the discovery could be without any national So Prof Bryan took the model of the discovery and went before the committee and ably ex discussed the great use and value and advantage that it would be to the people if it should be patented and adopted Bryan was a fine elucidator and could give the model a wonderful of all its parts with perfect clearness After the theory had been thoroughly a great flow of eloquence and silver tongued oratory before all the on the first ot November 1896 the committee met and took Prof Bryans model under to investigate and if it was deserving a patent and a charter After considering it well for purposes and use a were highly delighted with the model and were in favor of giving Bryan a patent on his discovery but a large majori ty of the committee shook their heads and said altho Mr Bryans model was nicely gotten up and very beautiful and attractive finish and appearance that its too weak and that its axles and bottom could not stand the na and pressure that it would be required to carry arso that the model was without check its speed in going down a declivity that the McKinley model was preferable one that had been always had So Prof Bryans model was as wanting in its parts The silver professors thencommenced to remedy the defects by making some changes They put in a small tariff drive wheel and a number of free trade pulleys and gave the model a coat of income veneering yarn isrn Alter reinuaenng revarn fishing at the expiration of four years Prof Bryan again went before the committee and presented his rectified new discovery and plead for a patent But still a majority of the committee thought that the tariff drive wheel was too small and too weak for the propelling power that wouldbe needed on up grade that there were too many free trade pulleys for the size of the model and they did not like the color of the income veneering and varnish used They told Bryan that the McKinley system filled the demands and they did not like to risk a new model so Bryan tailed to get a Before Prof Bryan made his third and last request for a patent on his model he attached a broad railroad gauge The committee ob jected to this addition believing it1 would be burdensome and give dis satisfaction and the discovery was The silver craze passed off and those that had been effected with it came to themselves and are now ashamed or their former capers But political and religious fanatic ism has always existed and now abounds such belongs to the human family life received and were frequently interrupted by applause which or twice bordered on disorder but it was all in happy mood Thomas felt more at home of course this being his home and set a rapid gait in his what he would do for the people and referred to his political record while in the state senate This was his second speech here during the campaign but was more forceful than his former address It was asserted Its right to choose whore to work for a living If labor prefers to build automobiles or to man icure ladles hands or even as we see It to make cheap wrappers In a New England factory town rather than work on n farm what Is to be done Time only way to ninle those one time farmers go back to work on the Innd Is to make It pay nod that would mean higher prices thou are now paid the farmer At present 7 cents per pound dressed Is the best the farmers of this region receive for beef 3 cents per quart for milk richer in fat than most that is sold In cities and vegeta tiles for nearly nothing hack from the railroads nut already the ultimate consumer pays more than he wishes The remedy is hack to the faun with the ultimate consumer himself If he will forego fashionable clothes champagne and canvasback duel he content with the best beet mutton and chickens milk cream cheese and but ter that any market affords the city rebel could with no more than n few thousand Invested in
