So tar as rasing money is San Francisco is making a much stronger bid for the Panama exposi lion of 1915 than is New Orleans The Pacific coast city reports that it has secured promises of private sub scription in aid of the affair amount ing to about 7000000 In plans arc on foot to obtain pledges ot state aid to a large amount the combined funds counted on totaling than 15000000New is securing promises of aid by private subscription and is counting on assistance trout the state But it has in sight no such fund as San Francisco expects to offerThe selection of the California city as the site would make the affair a Pacific coast exposition and a railroad a real Panama exposition nor a proper recognition of the importance of water transportation No doubt railroad assistance is an important factor in helping San Francisco to raise such a large fund with com parative ease The exposition if held in San Francisco would bring large revenues to the lines in the form of passenger faresNew Orleans is the logical site for the Panama exposition It is nearer the canal than any other large city in the United States It is the water gateway to the great central west which should have access to the gulf and the Panama canal though a network of inland water routes If it is the intention to make the Panama exposition a instead of an instrumentality for revenues booming a particular section the country at large should insist upon minimizing the importance of local contributions as a factor in the site Mf Farmer Make your home as modern for your family as a city residence and place was given in Prof Pomroys work on Money and Finance This book was considered by some to be a very able work of financial logic and philosophy It was generally accepted by all the learned critics and men of letters belonging to the Greenback school as being the wonder of the age It gives a full history of money and finance from the days of Abraham to the time of discovery This book also contained a treatise on political economy thought to be the best ever published to the world it also contained some beautiful illustrations and proverbs headed as Hot Drops and Meat for Men which were very instructive as well as stylish and tasty It was thought by some that this book ought to be taken and adopted as a standard work and as a guide to wealth for all financial and Prof Pomroy displayed great genius and ability he had acted in every political capacity known to the American people He incnted in financial matters from early manhood and succeeded in constructing a six horse power ob servatory at New York which con tained one of the best financial tele scopes known to the world It was through this powerful magnifying instrument that he discovered the solar Greenback dollar revolving independently on its own axis a legal tender influence hav ing gold and silver satellites sur rounded by a large ring of currency Pomroy stated that from his observatory he had a splendid view of the comet bonds which had visited our financial firmament periodically he stated that since its appearance in 1861 and 62 it had the earth than ever before and that it had passed between the earth and the solar Greenback dollar which occurcd at Washington City the equinoctial line in 1873 He also stated that the comet bonds had a create great attraction and financial drouths and since 1873 it had presented lustre and brilliancy of gold that from the signs of the zodiac the comet bonds would gradually disappear in a northern direction that it would soon be north of the Mason and Dixon line and would not be likely to returu until that generation should have passed away He also stated that the solar Greenback dollar had its eclipse like all other financial theories that in 1875 there com menced a partial yearly eclipse of the solar Greenback dollar at the meridian Washington City which lasted until the first of January 1879 This eclipse was caused by the satellite Gold passing between the solar Greenback dollar and the earth He said that the satellite Silver had just emerged from an eclipse which commenced in 1876 in 1878 He said that the solar Greenback dollar seemed to advance and recede from the earth that in 1865 and 66 its mag nitude wag much larger than at any time since and that there was a visible on its face caused by a legislative eruption of customs and import duties and the redemp tion of pybjjc that the solar Greenback dollar anf the satellite Gold seemed to be on one parade while Silver was undergoing changes Further particulars can be found in Pomroys Financial Astrono my when tbU discovery was made the Greenback thcotjst went forth into all quarters of the nation preaching financial salvation to every creature to a backslidden and bankrupt people proclaiming from the stand and from the house top good news and glad tidings peace in America and Greenbacks for the people The Pacific MiMtklys Special Intro frcttry Offer The Pacific capitalists for if the mighty works which have been done for you thro national legislation had been done for the laborer and yocmanry they would have repented Ye bankers who have been exalted above the common level you shall be brought downThey also argued that the new discovered system would bring about the financial millennial and that in this nation all other nations should be financially blessed That here the Jew shall find his temple of poverty shall be glori fied that this nation would be as a beacon light to all other nations while sailing upon the and as a guiding star to those that may be wandering in financial com plication and afar off That from the days of Jackson until then the kingdom of finance had suffered violence and violence taken by force That the prophets of Gov ernment bonds should be destroyed from oft the land that the worship pers of gold silver and fine metals would flee into the mountains for a city of refuge that the scepter would depart from the specie sys tem and the Greenbacks would be ushered in that men would no long er view finance thro a glass darkly but sec it in its true light that want hunger and destitution would be destroyed and stricken from the land that pains and deprivations of poverty would not be realized that the weary and wayworn would find rest in stately mansions where they can have the gratification and assurance that they had plenty of money and no poor kin while all national and individual prosperity would advance at lightening speed that if law and legislation can create cne dollar and make it as gold it can create billions pay both public and private indebtedness and then make a general distribution to the poor and needy which would escape all comtnunjsp and give gen eraLcmfalU money and trade with other nations Now it was found after the dis covery had been made that it could be of little force until it could be brought into practical use So the Greenback professors in the differ ent states met in 1876 and selected one Peter CoopeV of New man of considerable prominence and ability to make a model of the discovery and present it to the com mittee of the whole and have it patented But Mr Cooper failed to get a patent on the grounds that it was thought that the model would soon be thrown out of beat on ac count of some loose screws Steps were then taken to tighten up the give it a better coat of varnish After four years James B Weaver was selected to represent the model before the same commit tee and try for a patent Mr Weaver also failed on the ground that the Grange pulley was not made of durable material and would sot stand the wear and tear that would be required So there were some further improvements made on the model by putting a silver cylinder in the place of the Grange cylinders and in 1884 one Benjamin Butler was chosen to go before the same committee and try for a patent But the objection was raised that the Jftftde wanting in propelling power Cutler failed to get a patent Then ier were made and a large fly whetej was attached and silver mounted and with a silver finish And after fpur years Mr was chosen to go befpfp he cpnmttee and try again but failed owing jto tire njpdej having no gold axles pivots and sockets It was again presented by Mr Weaver bfjt Jje failed owing to the machine having no force bjll and a gold lever attached 10 HE CONTINUED States When water is applied either to barn soil or to crops outside the regular Irri gation season it Is termed winter irri gation The practice thus far lion been confined largely to the warmer parts of the arid region It has become well established in Arizona nnd California and Is being quite rapidly extended to parts of Oregon Kansas and the liocky mountain states Experience has shown that n deep retentive soil Is capable of storing a large quantity of water On account of the fluctuation of western streams of nil kinds from the small creek to the large river the greatest How of water often comes nt n season when there Is least demand for It In n few beau ties adequate storage facilities have been provided to retain the surplus but as n rule It Is allowed to go to waste The passage of so much waste water led to the Introduction of winter irrigation and In nearly every case the results have been satisfactory The chief differences between winter and ordinary irrigations are the larger volumes used the crude manner of conveying nUll applying the water nnd the dormant or partially dormant con dkion of the plants nt the time of Ir rigationIn county Cal water Is turned Into tho cnnnls In January and February The large canals of the vModesto and Turlock districts run more than half a lend during the tat ter half of February This Is the rainy period In both these localities and the sCll Is usually too wet for plant growth but water Is applied to alfalfa fields to nil up the subsoil so as to provide n surplus for the rain less summer when water Is scarce Ilesldes furnishing n supply of much needed moisture winter Irrigation when conditions are favorable pre vents winter killing nnd Improves the mechanical condition of the soil UNIQUE WINTER PLOWING Snow Plowed Under Is Said to Do the Poor Manure Most farmers unhitch and turn In when snow begins to fall but here we have a picture of n Vermont man who finished his tall plowing after the ground was well covered with the whiteness Snow linN been called the poor mans manure because It washes from the atmosphere as It falls some nitrogen in the form of nitrate of ammonia and sometimes nitric acid The atmos phere Hiunt i varying amounts of quantities Just after an electrical I Satisfactory n Wuo JJl1n1 Mans liut a PLOWING SNOW IX YMWONT storm the quantity Is Increased as the electricity converts some of the free nitrogen of the atmosphere Into these available forms There are more ni hates and ammonia salts In the at mosphere near cities than In the as these substances are found escaping smoke of factories Halns and fogs and even ball wash the atmosphere of nitric acid nnd am monia salts After n dry spell a heavy shower will contain sometimes com paratively large quantities of these substances and a lute snow In the spring of the year when the weather has been previously dry will contain probably a larger quantity than even n rain for time reason that the snow is more finely divided than the rain drops mid washes the atmosphere more completely There are annually brought down In rains snows and dews about nine to ten pounds ot nitrogen available for plant food to the acre This If bought lu the form of commercial fertilizers would cost say 175 I assume therefore says M A Scovell of the Kentucky experiment station that Is why snow Is called the poor mans manure as it nt least assists In bring ing this much available nitrogen to the soil Some Sad Farm Conditions Two hundred dairy farms In a dozen states were investigated and Inspected and rated according to modern of
