System Although we all of us recognize the immensity of the railroad system United States it is not so generally understood that Us growth is also on a stupendous scale Evi dence of this Is found in the fact that during last year there was ad ded to the existing railroads of this country a length of steam road which is equal to about oneforth of the whole of the existing steam roads of Great Britain the increase for the year Icing 6310 miles The total length of railroad in the whole country on December 31st 1909 according to Poors Manual of Railroads was 238356 miles as against 232046 miles at the close of 1908 The capital stock of the railroads has reached over citjht billion dol lars and the bonded debt is above nine billion These with minor liabilities bring up the total liabilities to the huge sum of over twenty billions of dollars The total cost of railroad and equipment is fourteen and a half billion dol lars The total earnings from traffic were in ronnd 578000000 and from freight traffic 1720000000 These with other sources of revenue brought up the total gross earnings to 2513 000000 The net earnings were 852000000 and the total net in come was 1018041837 The total number of passengers carried system was 974 423 o5i and the revenue per passenger mile was 1834 cents The total freight moved amounted 215800 tons Inc revenue per ton milt being 0757 cent The political speculation on themes and theories that have always proved to be uncertain unsound and dis astrous to the general welfare of the This party has been as one lost in the woods traveling around and round back and forth and across If its tracks could be printed no person could tell which way it had traveled Its confusion has bred dissention delusion panics and fanaticism During the 18705 when two great panics were raging in the county and one in this state a fragment of this party was thrown off from its main trunk which form ed into an independent party assuming the name of The Greenback Party somewhat of a new departure of political issues Some good people of our county and state were caught in the drift of its delusion and led by the spirit of its fanaticism We shall take notice of this delusion that raged for a number of years during which a great financial discovery known as the greenback money system was said to have been made The solved and the solution achiev ed which had rendered the theory so explicit and plain that sense and intelligence could no longer doubt nor ignorance have a cause to This wonderful and unpar alleled discovery was made by an association of some of the most learned and intelligent men that to the Democratic party among whom was the gifted Prof Pomroy of New York Blanton Duncan Wood and others through out the entire country Duncan was one of the directors of Kentucky Now this discovery was like all other discoveries and inventions requiring a long lapse of time and experimenting to be for practical use The power of steam was observed as early as the middle of the sixth century and with a long list of experimenting it was not reduced to a practical use until the beginning of the nineteenth century by Robert Fulton So with this discovery for thousands years back were made at in tervals by different nations gradual ly being improved by the succession of generations a test was put to it by old Lycurgus of Sparta also in the Venetian Republic which threw a dim vista over its final success After repeated attempts of many nations to discover the grand idea it was thought to be made to per fection in the United States it is wonderful and strange to think that the world had stood so long without the discovery being made but it seems that the most of the human race were deluded with the idea that labor was the basis wealth and that they could only ob tain it by the sweat of the thro the channels of labor and the avenues of industry Now there were three attempts to make the discovery in this prior to this The first attempt was made during the early history our nation The experiment was made with a compound double geared apparatus known as Old Continental Money System The machine was not properly con structed consequently it was soon thrown out of beat for the want a stop cock and force pump no discovery mas made The next was made during the 18605 when considerable excite nvnt prevailed throughout the en tire nation owing to some misunder standing in regard to nations rule The experimenting was carried on in two sections of the country one jit Richmond Va under the of Prof Davis who used the one horse power seifoIjng apparatus known as the Dixie machinp But while experimenting the exploded causing considerable dam age owing to there being an over charge of powder anti bomb shells and the machine and the feeling a little ticklish when they observed a leakage in the main boiler caused by the expansion of the public debt they reversed the power put on the brakes and let it gradually simmer down No further discovery was made until some years afterwards when some of the great American geniuses put their heads together and thought they had made the discovery complete The grand idea was this that money is the creature of law and where there is no law there can be no regular financial system and that money and wealth arc not the Of labor but that labor must necessarily be the product of money that money vitalizes and sustains that labor could not be kept up without the use of money That if money was the product of labor the man that labored the most would have the most money but that it is to the contrary the man that has the most money labors the least consequently labor must be the of money and money is the fruits of law and legislation idea was that money needs no other basis than that of law and legislation from whence it eminates altho it may be placed upon substance like the acts of yet that it does not demand a basis That it is as plausible for money to have the sanction of law and the confidence of the people for a basis as it is for the earth to be supported and kept in motion by the influence of gravitation and attraction which is not denied by the learned And it was further shown that money could have a full as plausible as distance and depth can be determined without the use of a lint or weight could be ascer taimed without equal balance An other idea was that money could no intrinsic value of all sub stance is determined that if money should have an intrinsic value and then be placed upon material that had a productive intrinsic value it would necessarily have a com pound intrinsic value or should money by legislation be placed upon different material having a different intrinsic value it would then have a compound ed intrinsic value which would of order But the intrinsic value of all substance is estimated by its use and purpose and money being designed for all purposes and for general use should have no in trinsic value Another idea was that money needs no redemption but the force and effect of law and legislation the will of the to continue its perpetuity that it would be as consistent to redeem the acts of legislation and the letters of the law made by the press as to redeem money Another idea was that money should not be denomin ated or valued by weight or fineness of material That the idea of grains ounces and pounds constituting value was nonsense and be longs to the dark ages that grains bulk and fineness has nothing to the regulation of the value of money giving it any that is inconsistent as it would be to require a certain number of pages or lines and letter to constitute a book and more or less it could not be a book nut that unto the of time United States all power is over the kingdom of finance and FORKED FLAMES Lick Up in a Short While 50W in Foodstuffs Buildings and Mill Machinery Greenville Milling Co Flour Ilant To tally Destroyed By Fire Early Saturday Morning THE FIRE HOSE WOULD NOT REACH An alarm of fire at 2 oclock last Saturday morning drew the people of the city and surroundings to the plant of the Greenville Milling Co at the depot and in less than two hours they had witnessed a fire loss of 65000 the grain elevator con taining about 25000 bushels of wheat and the flouring mill and machinery being destroyed The Illinois Central railroad also a loss of some thousands of in the burning of three cars and a car loaded with lumber In the boarding cars twenty men of an extra track gang were sleeping and some of them had very narrow escapes from the flames It is thought that the fire originated in some manner in the string of cars and there are several theories in the matter The fire de partment made a ready response but when the hose had been from the nearest fire plug it was found that the 1000 feet of hose was short An appeal was made to Central City and 350 feet were sent up arriving on the 515 train but it did not fit the hose here and could not be used to any effect though every effort was made to overcome the difference in size The grain elevator was first burned and as it was some 60 feet from the mill opportunity was given for the removal of much flour and grain from the mill but the fire continued along the string of cars and in a short whilecommunicated the the mill also and this structure was completely gutted This was the most spectacular fire that has been witnessed here in a long while and the greatest in loss The will cover only about half the loss but the company is plan ning to rebuild and the plant will It means the loss of a y Ur to the concern and will prove a loss to every industry in town as farmers will be compelled to go to other points for grinding and will naturally do their other trading in a large also The plant Explodes Killing Two Men The explosion of the boiler at a saw mill near Dunmor on the Dia mond Spring road about i oclock Friday wrecked the mill and fcjlled Qwner W T Carroll and the engineer Ross Silvey The boiler was an old one having been use about 40 years and was too small beside for the work that was it In an endeavor to the delivery of more power the boiler was crowded beyond its resistance and the explosion re sulted Carroll was killed being thrown some thirty yards and his body hurled against a tree Silvey struck 5y a part of the boiler plate and was terribly mang led but lived about four hours Both were popular men and their shocking deaths have sorrow There were three other employes at the mill but they feared just what occurred and had left the place declaring that any effort to increase he steam pressure would result disastrously Burial of Charles T Reynolds Charles y on Tuesday of at week after a short was buried at 1030 oclock Monday morning in the Reynolds Before Down with the Drummers Editor Ktconu In this letter I shall tell your readers what I said in my answer to that merchant Will say that a great many of our merchants or nice hon orable men obliging and and I have great respect for them but they are all of them lending a helping hand in sustaining and up holding one of the great curses of the age Many of them perhaps have never thought of it in its true light and to that curse I now call attention The thing that helps to oppress the poor men and women today is the middle men or as we call them I have nothing harsh to say of these men as a rule they are sensible upright and nice men I have no fault to find of them but every retail merch ant whether he is a dry goods man or grocery man or hardware man knows that the salary and traveling expenses of this great army of men comes off of the consumer All of this expense is added to the price of the goods sold by the wholesale houses to the retail houses so the consumer alter all pays the cxpens es of these men in addition to the profits of the retail merchant Is it any wonder that we have to pay such high prices for clothing and everything else we wear How can all these things be remedied To my mind there is but one way to bring about a change and it can only be accomplished by the retail merchants Let merchahts form an association or union obligating themselves never to buy one dollars worth of goods of any kind from a wholesale house through middle men just cut that thing out go themselves to market and buy their goods give the wholesale men to understand that they will not patro nize them through middle men and that they must deduct the expenses of these men from the profits on the goods bought instead of adding their expense to their profits as heretofore do away with these men altogether making the de mand in behalf of the consumer If retail men everywhere should go in to such a union do you not sec how scon it would be that all these drum mers would be looking for jobs and hundreds of thousands of dollars which are being paid today by con sumers would be saved by them It has become nccessaiy today or our toiling men to form unions to protect themselves from and slavery Take our farmers they have been driven to form as sociations for self protection against trusts Was there ever a greater ex cuse for united effort upon the part of consumers than today We must look for sorrp way to reduce the cost of living or else there will be such an uprising by the consumers which will bring on such a state of affairs as this country never heard of before It is coming Now dont say that that is a hobby of a I see that upris ing today working like leaven in the meal It has taken deep root in the minds of the consumers and if something is not done soon to bring relief a slumbering volcano will turn loose in this country that a standing army of five hundred thousand men could subdue- I am not a prophet nor the daugh ter of a prophet but
