beginning of locomotor ataxia the diagnosis will not remain doubtful very long for many other will occur which taken in con junction with the pain in the back case clear It is not of these great and serious disorders that we write here but rather ot that irritating persistent nagging pain from which some persons suffer year m and year out with no coverable in the back as it has been described In a case of this kind there should always be a thorough examination by a competent physician in order to determine whelh r any internal displacement is at the root of the trouble otherwise the backache will certainly persist if there is until the dislodged kidney or other pelvic organ in fault has been put where it belongs The past history of the sufferer must be learn ed Has there been perhaps long before any strain or sprain or bad jar of the entire bodily frame Many of these cases of obscure spi nal misery start from accidents sp many that the phrase railway spine has been incorporated into medical phraseology It is easy to see that a ph steal must necessarily depend largily upon the integrity of the spinal system with its wonderful radiation of nerves and ligaments and that a bad fall or jar of that portion of the body may easily result in lifelong trouble The unforgivable practical joke of pulling the chair away from a per son about to sit down has been known to make a life cripple If after careful examination there does not appear to be any serious organic trouble to cause the back ache then the best course open tp the sufferer is to settle down patient ly to the fact that he has a weak it is his duty to nurse The spine can be favored in the same way that any other part of the body can be favored REST first and in capital letters That back must have no needless work and if it starts to ache it must be understood that too much has been asked of it Give it as many hours a day in the recumbent position as it demands and start to strengthen wi v I 1 J t col- e 0 tree said sawed back and forth by an electric motor The heat generated is sufficient to burn a thin kerf through the wood A tree 20 inches in diameter can be felled in six minutes The charred butt of the tree may easily be marked with chalk and the charcoal layer is so thin that it does not hide any decay or other defects in the wood MORE cement was in United States in 1909 than in any other one Letter But Too Busy With the Doctor for An Immediate Reply Riltlor ItiMoitu Have just received TUB RKCOUU with the letter yon forwarded to me The letter is from an nnincumbcrcd widower who is a hanker Will at tend to his case next week This week I must tell what I said to that doctor in replying to his letter He had the nerve to till me just what he wanted He said he was getting old and as he was now compctant to take care of a wife he had decided to get married was well satisfied from he had heard of me that I was just the woman he wanted In reply I told him frankly that he would have to quit the practice of medicine if I became his wife and gave him my reasons in full In the first place I called his attention to the fact that of all the humbugs in the world the practice of medi cine was the greatest I told him that a cousin of mine graduated from the Medical University at Louisville some years ago began the practice of medicine built up a good business right away rode day and night and all of a sudden he tore down his sign closed his office doors and gave notice that he would answer no more sick calls He gave me his reasons He said he had no confidence in medicine that it was a humbug that no man could prac tice medicine and make it pay with out lying and being dishonest The man who would be honest and in his practice would be de nounced as an old fogy and play out Why said I cousin you sur prise me what do you mean Just what I have said was his reply He then explained few things to me and made a convert of me at once so I decided then that I would newer marry a doctor I shall here speak of a few reasons given by my cousin for giving up the practice of medicine Suppose you are called to see a child who has eaten some thing which has disagreed with it and 4 RQonscquencc there is con gestion o stomach the is vomiting has fever after looking at the tongue and feeling the pulse and asking a dozen or more Now comes the test with the doctor If he will tell the parents the truth and be honest just as soon as he is gone they will send for another doctor one who has some sense and who will give medicine who will look solemn and wise after giving some chalk powders take out his prescription book and write one or two prescriptions and away he goes the father in a run to the drug store The doctbr has charged two dollars for going across the street The druggist has made a bill too The next morning the doctor drops in finds the little fellow up playing unless he gave him something to keep him sick The doctor now wants to fix it so as to be called every time a member of the family grunts so he impresses the mother that he just reached the bedside of the patient in the nick of time had lie been a few hours late the little fellow would surely have died Such lying and dishonesty Why there will be more doctors in hell than of any other class of men except lawyers To be the wife of a doctor Never neverNow Mr Editor I want to say that I am not condemning science The science of medicine is alright The science of anatomy of physiol igy of chemistry of hygiene and canation I am proud of what has been and is being done along these lines The thing I am condemning is the humbuggery in the practice of medicine There arc but few but what will tell you they have but little faith in medicine Take from the doctor today morphine calomel and quinine and you disarm them Now I believe surgery is a blessing and should be upheld and there is a place where a woman shquld always be called and women should prepare themselves for that work But poor down troden wom an here she meets with opposition as she does in everything else In the eye of the doctor her place is over the cook stove at the washtub How long how long Ohl Lord God until my sister be avenged ot their wrongs Could men today see the tears hear the prayers and know of the heartaches of their wives and daughters they would surely lend a helping hand at the ballot box to correct the wrongs which make our women slaves As it is today we can sing and pray at t r questions doctors r t chat truthful child home and occasionally church cook three meals a day the year clothes Iron make and mend clothes with nothing to look to in the next year but the same rounds of duty How many men in our towns let their wives bring in the coal split the kindling make the fires draw all the water tool after supper instead of the hus band staying at home to help his wife to take care of the children and be company for her he takes his hat lights his pipe or cigar goes up in town loafs around comes 1 I oclock A hus band who will treat his poor wife in that way ought to be given a good dose of raw cowhiding well raid on Mr Editor you ill please excuse me for my expressions for I am not through with the doctor yet Will say that all of the pills we have to say the doctor is the hardest of them all I knew a poor man who on his death bed lying by inches for a month the doctor came to see him every day though he knew he was doing him no good never gave him anything but what he called resting powders morphine The poor fellow died Then here came the doctors bill 150 for what for 50 cents worth of mor phine Tell me that that doctor can be saved lie is as sure of if he was there this minute He robbed that poor idow and children of their living Again In stead of taking their medicine with them they invariable write a pre scription to the drug store thus the doctor not only lives oft of you but makes it possible for the drug gist to do the same thing One of my brothers run a drug store for a while When he quit he told me that druggists came nearer getting something for nothing than class of men that unless they made from one to three hundred per cent on their drugs they felt that they were making no money So let our girls think for a long time before marrying a doctor Very respectfully LUCINDY OVKItTAKKK Notice to Town and Country I endeavored to close out my increasing at the rate of 1000000 a day Every dollar of new money conning into the State gives added value to improvements already made In the opinion of the Post the money that is flowing into Texas at the rate of 700000 a day to be in vested in farm lands and in and industrial enterprises of various kinds will in time increase the price of land fourfold the long term investor in real estate is assured of a handsome profit The following paragraphs from the Posts article on land inctcasc are applicable in every State j There arc two classes of property natural Natural pro such as land cannot of course be created by man we can only increase its value Artificial property such as buildings machin cry etc can be created by man and its value can also be enhanced With natural property we are limit ed in our methods of increasing value while there arc no restrictions to development through artificial property We may gridiron the State with railroads dot it with factories build cities and fill the valleys with happy homes but we cannot create another acre of land The investor may come to Texas and buy land and if he cared to do so can sell it later and leave the State with all the property he brought into the State but the investor who builds railroads factories irrigating canals houses etc cannot take them back with him and he has established permanent values This should put before the wide awake citizen the advantage of wise legislation through law enforcement good school systems good roads and other factors for attracting capi tal to a State rapid filling up of the country as a result of immigra tion has already not only brought most of the Western land under cultivation or private ownership but has also made both reclamation of arid lands in the West and restora tion of abandoned lands in the East a matter of urgent necessity and a source of increased wealth to the nation and profit to individuals crease and the owner of a produc tive farm has a gilt edge invest ment in any State But the best means of increasing property values rapidly is to encourage an influx of capital Kentuckys present tax laws which the last General declined to amend for no better reason than according to an unmvcstigated and untruthful ru mor the movement to amend them was a rich mans lobby constitute a hindrance to capital that ought to be removed by the next General As sembly There are also several Kentucky counties in which a better enforce ment of criminal laws would be of value not only to the counties most immediately effected but also to the material welfare as well as the reputation of the State The peace officer who connives at lawlessness and the lawmaker who declines to consider such knotty questions as are involved In tax re form and school and road laws robs the State from whose treasury their pay is drawn School books for all grades can be found at the new store of Leslie Hale and school supplies of all kinds also f3 Lawrence Yonts Dies at
