Again we twang the mournful harp of reminiscence and lament a dis appearance Where we ask in ac cents dismal is the old fashioned peach cobbler 0 fair sweet of the old fashioned kitchen spice scented delicacy now season able but missing Peaches were not created by na ture to go in pies They were for cobblers When the slices of this generous fruit find themselves cramped in the narrow confines of a picpan their emotions overcome them They utter one protest against unkind fate and then shrivel up hopelssness Apricots and canned peaches will endure the pie treatment but fresh peaches arc of too figure in the romance of early and Ohio as is Daniel Boone Considered historically he held more important commands and more frequently led expeditions than did his famous friend and as sociateKenton was born in Virginia in 1 755 of very poor parents who were unable to give him even the rudi ments of an education When he was 1 6 he engaged in a fight lorthe affections of a fickle damsel who agreed to present her heart to the victor The contest went against him and presently he began to think no longer of winning the girl but of escaping with his life It occur red to him that if he could manage to entangle his adversarys lung hair in the bushes near by he He struggled into the brush his enemy following With a few quick turns he wound the others thick shock of long hair through the branches The advantage now lay with Kenton In his rage he beat his foe until at last he was over come with the fear that he had com mitted murder So he fled going beyond the Alleghenies ing his name to Simon Butler IK the new region he made friends with traders and hunters among them Simon Girty who in later years was for a long period the renegade commander of Indians against the whites At this time Girty was in the colonial military service and he and Kenton became fast friends In 1774 Kenton served as a spy during Lord Dunmores war the anterevolutionary campaign against the unfortunate and forbearing Min go Indian chief Logan Kenton showed great endurance courage during the campaign and it fell to his lot to save the life of Boone in one battle With the outbreak of the i evolu tion the Indians of the frontier in alliance with Britain and often un der British or tory officers like Simon Girty and his brothers George James and Thomas attack ed American settlers Kenton fought in this bush warfare for three years and then took part in the expedition assisting in the capture of Kaskaskia Shortly after his return while on a punitive horsestealing expedition against the Indians of the Chilli cothe settlement in Ohio he was captured by them The Indians were exceedingly angry and proceeded to torture captive He was forced to run the gantlet thirteen times and wasat last condemned to be burned alive Painting the victim black was a customary preliminary to burning Kenton had just been when Simon Girty arrived and demanded his release The In dians temporarily commuted his sentence and tying him upon the of a horse carried him one days journey Then they again made preparations to burn him in spite of Girtys protests This lime the generous and forgiving chief Logan saved him Logan persuaded a French trader to buy Kentons freedom and he was taken to British post at Detroit where he remained being well treat ed and receiving half wages for his work until in July a traders wife helped him escape Back through the hostile tribes of Ohio the most thickly settled In dian region north of Mexico he found his way to Kentucky where served against the British and Indian invaders as a captain of in fantry Learning after the revolution that thcraan he supposed he had killed was still alive Kenton returned to Virginia with the intention ot re maining but soon brought his fathers family back to Kentucky Thereafter he served as major of a Kentucky battalion in Waynes great expedition against tlie Ohio Indians and in 1805 he became brigadier general of Ohio militia serving in the war of 1812 He participated in the invasion of Canada and fought in the battle of the Thames After the war he was reduced to great poverty and required the aid of charitable neighbors The tracts of land which he had possessed were lost through the in vasion of settlers and his ignorance of the law He ought to have been a rich man instead of a pauper In 1824 he appeared in Frankfort Ky in tattered garments to peti tion the legislature to release the claims of the state against some mountain land owned by him His appearance excited ridicule but be ing recognized by Gov Fletcher he monument erected over his supposed grave in Oakland cemetery Urbana Cham paign county Ohio really marks the last resting place of a contemp orary pioneer while the body of the famous Indian fighter on a Warrant Engage in a Fatal Pistol Duel BOTH THE PARTICIPANTS ARE DEAD One of the most shocking pistol duels that has occurred in this in a long while took place on the street at White Plains about 10 oclock Monday night and both participants arc dead Mr W H Coursey of this place and who was formerly deputy marshal here had been serving as marshal at White Plains for about three weeks Mon day night a warrant was placed in his hands sworn out against Tom Hanks who was charged with and abusing some man that afternoon The warrant was carried to a tent where a revival service was being held and Mr Coursey until after service was over when in company with Mr Walter Crick the former marshal he went in search of Hanks whom he soon found and told of the war rant which he held in his hand Hanks made no response but pulled an automatic pistol and began Coursey pulled his revolver and began to protect himself Fif teen shots were fired and Hanks was prostrate on the ground when the shooting was over Mr Coursey started to his boarding house still in company with Crick but began to stagger which was the first in timation that Crick had that the officer had been shot Coursey never mentioning the fact With slight Coursey walked on to the Chouse and a doctor was soon at his side Examination showed that only one shot had struck the officer but it made a dangerous wound passing through the chest near the heart Every effort at relief was made but death came at 7 oclock Tuesday morning the patient re maining conscious until about three hours before death He realized that he would not recover told the fricnds surrounding him that he died attempting to uphold the law pressed the wish that he might re cover as he had no ill feeling to ward him The hotly of Mr Coursey as brought to his home here accom panied by his wife who had been summoned and him before death Hundreds of friends and relatives visited the home where the body lay until yesterday afternoon when it was carried to a service was held at 3 oclock and interment made in the cemetery there His wife and children have the sympathy of in their shocking bereave ment Deceased was a brave man and died in the discharge of his dutyTom Hanks was wounded lour times out of the six shots fired at him by Coursey and he died at n oclock Tuesday morning Hanks was well known here having worked in the coal mines at Water Co held after the annual tweeting of the Stockhold ers on Sept 5 1910 the following motion was made and carried unanimously by the eight Directors present That the price charged per thousand gallons for water in the city of Greenville be raised from 25c per thousand gallons to 40c per thousand gallons and that the manufacturing rate be raised from 15c per thousand gallons to 20c per thousand gallons the minimum charge of 100 per month to remain the same but to cover only two thousand five hundred gallons of water This change to go into effect on Oct 1 1910 The board of Directors wish to set forth to the citizens of Greenville the reason for this action The Company has in vested at the present time in the Water Works the sum of 2160088 from which it derived an income during the last year of 224414 this being less than one half of the annual income from the Light plant or the Ice plant each of which represent a smaller investment than the Water plant There is a considerable portion of the city which does not have the water service and the citizens residing there are justly calling for water mains Considering this fact together with the fact that the income from the Water plant does not pay the oper ating expenses the Board of Directors decided that the only action they could take which would be fair to the citizens and the Stockholders would be to raise of the board of Trustees in the city of London and was very impressed with our street light ing system here He seemed that some of our lights were as much as six feet apart and that the street was well lighted between lamps Judge Hazlewood arrived in Greenville on the early morning train and walked up from the station while the lights on He was also favorably impressed with our low rate for arc lights as compared with the rate charged in London In London the city pays 52 per year for a 1200 candle power arc light as against our price of 65 per year for a 2000 candle power arc lamp The arc lights in London arc on the moonlight sche dule but the company there holds the city to the letter of the law If it is a dark rainy night and the calander says there is a moon the lights are not
