ot today and especially the citybred child of today is more noticeably a victim of nervous troubles than was formerly the case The importance ot this said fact to the family and to the community at large cannot be overstated As a noted authority on the disorders of childhood has put it The neurotic child of today is the neurasthenic adult of a few years hence Admitting this it follows that no pains are too great if by taking them we can lift the burden of its inheritance from the nervous child Unfortunately nerves arc very likely to run m families so that children are not only born with nerves but they have nerves thrust upon them afterward the overwrought adults of the house hold reacting upon the children and back again until a sort of hor rid family ring game is established from which no one seems able to escape A child wliich is predisposed to nerves brought up in an atmos phere of this sort will betray in many ways the havoc that is being wrought Its appetite may be fitful and capricious its sleep will almost certainly be disturbed and its tern per will be uncertain 1 he nervous child is often the iclim of morbid fear It is afraid of the of strangers afraid of everything and of nothing and this unhappy timidity is based upon and con scantly fostered by the continual suggestion of fear that is in the air they breathe There is only one safe rule to ap ply m these cases and it cannot be applied too soon Do not let a nervous adult bring up a nervous child It may be objected that this is a cruel rule and so it is for it f fywrt child The more nervous the mother is the sooner her child is placed in other hands to bring up the better for both of diem Let any one who doubts this watch the change wroughl in the child by a few weeks away from home in camp or on a farm or even in the same conditions of city life but in a household where calm and poise and quiet are the rule Inflexible regulations so neces sary for all arc essential in the training of the nervous child be cause it is only by them that a grad ual barrier of habit can be formed to shelter it from its inheritance Iron rules should prevail as to regularity of meals and bedtime Displays of or of ovcrsensiliveness or should be met with firmness in the one case or kindly indifference in the other They do not call for nagging or admiration or panic on the part of the elders The freight minus both land and capital There arc some facts which arc easily grasped and which have the most direct and positive bearing on this whole question The old isxlriving young people away from the farm and it has become next to impossible to keep hired help Men will not work on a farm when they come to understand that they can get employment in town or in the railroads at higher wages and with shorter days Nine or ten hours a day will not do on the old fashioned farms It is fourteen or more and days week at that The average in the cit taking all classes of employment together is about nine by their diversity arc a guarantee against failure The market has never been oversupplied with mush rooms squabs honey berries and the like There is the keenest kind of demand today all over the coun try for extra good butter eggs and poultry The need of potatoes cu cumbers beans onions other kinds of vegetables is incessant and in all of these lines there is profit far exceeding that gained from large single crops or big dairies The most difficult problems construction in the rural are found where the soil is chiefly of sand or clay and of these tlvo conditions the sand formation is rest while giving the matter considera cleanest ever the Lion f Fire Damage at Brick Yard The kiln shed at the brick yard of Barkley Bros near the depot was destroyed by fire about 815 oclock last Thursday night causing a loss of about 300 For several days a kiln of about 25000 brick had been fired and the shed was bone dry The crew had gone to supper and no one was present when the fire broke out but it is supposed that it was from a runboard between the kiln and shed roof It was some minutes before the alarm was given and by the time the fire department had reached the top of the depot hill it was seen that the destruction was complete and the apparatus was returned The kiln of course was nqt damaged nor was any other property Firing was con tinued until Tuesday and the kiln will remain sealed a few days when brick will be ready for sale Injured in Street Car Accident Mr Jake Gardner well known to many of our people here on account of frequent visits to Mr and Mrs J S Miller
