Control of Disease It is well sometimes to pause and take bearings with regard to the problems of health and sickness With the many wonderful discover ics the serums the immunities and the unproved knowledge of hygiene what is the situation today There arc plenty of statistics which al though they cannot lie do not al ways tell the truth It is known that although many diseases arc wiped out and many others doomed to extinction at a near diy there arc other disorders ominously on the Typhoid fever one of the most drinking water or milk or other food or to be spread from house to house through the agency of the fly and its days arc numbered Yellow fever and malaria arc no longer regarded as visitations of the will of heaven but arc recognized as due to the visitations of mos quitoes and it is not really necessary to have those mosquitoes although it may take some time and hard work to get rid of them Diptheria still rears its head but it is no longer formidable since the antitoxin for it has been found Tuberculosis is still all too com mon and the destruction of it will mean toil and care for humanity for years to come but the work is well under way The great start was made when this dread disease was moved by common scientific consent from the fatal to the curable class When this has once been done in regard to any human iK it is then for humanity to take care of itself Those nations that arc wilhng to spend the most monev and take the most pains to wipe out disease are coming out first in the race Great cities have learned the lesson it expensive to permit unnccccs v safy sickness Clean water pays clean streets pay decent housing for the poor pays The boards of health arc doing much in these directions and in many others and as time goes on they will do more As people are educated in these matters they will be willing and able to give more and wiser It is safe to prophesy that the day is coming when people will refuse to put up with prevent able nuisances and when the house fly the mosquito and the extinct and when if people want to know anything about tuberculosis they will have to read about it in books The German army recenty carried out a maneuver to test the abilityof the aeroplane for night attack The machine started out after dark to attack a bivouac consist ing of a squajdron of dragoons that was encamped 50 kilometers from the starting point The enemys camp waslocated by the aid of the camp fires and the aeroplane swoon ed down above the sleeping soldiers and dropped several bombs into the camp The success of the experi ment is stated to have been com plete The rules were announced last week governing tile aeroplane race from Chicago to New York to be held under the auspices of the Chicu go Evening Post nUll New York Times The contest is to on Oct 8th and is to be open only to aviators who have shown a record of sustained flight of one hour or more Practice flights must be made in Chicago by all contestants during the week previous to the start of the race All contestants must start upon the date set unless this is post poned because of adverse weather The start may be delayed until Oct i5th Seven days are allowed in which to complete the distance which is approximately a thousand miles if the line of the railroad is followed Hamilton Mars and Captain Baldwin have already enter ed for this race and it ii which so much has been spoken and written nut notwithstanding all of that it is less understood than many other biblical subjects What is faith Our lexicographers define it as the belief of a proposition based upon evidence and the definition is unquestionably right Is there a God When I go with this prop osition to the great book of nature I am met on every side with evidence which fixes con viction in my mind that there is a God The fixed and immutability of the laws by which everything in the natural kingdom in the animal kingdom in the mineral kingdom and the intellectual kingdom arc governed suggests to my mind a superhumanism a being of wisdom intelligence and power The per fect harmony of these laws the beauty displayed in all parts of na ture convinces me of the wisdom and power of the great architect in whose mind was conceived the plan of this world and all things in it and then the working out of this plan so perfectly in all of its parts constrains me to acknowledge that there is a God When I go with this question to the bible the very first statement i that wonderful book is In the beginning God created the heaven and earth The question comes up in my mint where did Moses get his informa tion Science teaches that man could create a world just as easy as he could create an idea that our ideas are all suggested to us by natural objects To illustrate their reasoning they call our attention to that power in water called steam which has been there always but was unknown through all the ages but was at last suggested to science by the tingling of the lid of a tea kettle On investigation it found that water could be converted into vapor or steam and that be confined that it must have some way of escape Thus power has been utilized and today it stands without a parallel in respects even electricity which is such a blessing to man is made by musca get uis tion As man cannot create idea then it must be that Moses was in spired That the history of creation was revealed to him by that God who made all things So as I study that book of books the evidence convincing I accept the proposi tion that there is a God thai Jesus Christ is the son of God and equal to him in power I believe it from the evidence which has been given When I study his life and the works he did like Nicodemus I say no man can do the works which he did without being superhuman When I study his history his pure life and see where he healed all manner of disease restored sight to the blind raised the dead and laid down his own life go down into hades and in his resurrection bring back from hades and the graves witnesses who him and when he went up to his father these witnesses es corted him to heaven and saw him crowned king of kings and lord of Lords I believe with all my heart that Jesus js the Christ the son of God From all this evidence like Peter I say art the Christ the son of God Faith then is the be lief of a proposition based upon evidence How many faiths are taught in the bible You would think after hearing what you do from the pulpit that there many You hear a great deal sajd about historical faith and evangelical faith But do you know that the bible is silent about historical faith fcJo such faith is known jn the word ol God As to how many faiths let Paul tell us u There is faith Then all this to do about historical faith and evangelical faith is simply nonsense There is but one faith in all the universe whether Issued by men or devils In the one faith there arc degrees the bible speaks of little faith much faith great faith There are objects of faith men both in nature and grace but there Ii but one faith The the faith which brings salvation as set forth in the gospel is that Jesus Christ is the son of God on him or in him we are commanded to believe The man who believes this proposition with all his heart c prepared to obey the gospel and be saved This is fully we consider the fact that all the sublime power that saves is not faith that power is in the thing be lieved To illustrate It is M ing that maintains life it is what we i 5 I tt couldnot ma In an appearedwith thou among object- of I establishedwhen jV l2it 4 1 f convincing wa i r so ire one nbtt cat s r cat It is not drinking that makes us drunk but what we drink So the all sublinie power that saves is in what we believe That Jesus is the son of God the power and the wisdom of God the way the truth and the life the only name under heaven given whereby we may be saved There is salvation in none other Powderly Miss Clara Bradley from Eutus is Snee t chug 1 1 Q rot four X ON THE LAID flbtfl llabbard la The Ira X r James J Hill has recently said that this country faces a grave peril through extravagance and waste Let me here suggest how a great sav ing in living expenses can be brought about For an individual to raise fruit and vegetables and send them along to the consumer requires various middlemen and divers and sundry agents and clerks For a group to raise all the fruit and vegetables it needs is the true economic idea You eliminate the costly middleman and you have your produce m much better condi tionThe Roycrofters have six men working steadily for about seven months on their farm For the five months three men suf fice These six men raised this year two thousand bushels of potatoes three hundred bushels of tomatoes five hundred bushels of corn three tons of carrots two tons of beets a ton of onions quantities of celery heaps of pumpkins and berries were picked to the extent of twenty five hundred quarts In addition to the work of caring for the crops these six men looked after thirty cows a hundred pig and raised more than two thousand chickens ducks geese turkeys and During berrypicking and harvest time a score of women and children worked say month a few hours a day in the fields but this was only funThese six men were changed oft from time to time and new ones from the shops were sent out nut the point make is this Six men working steadily for seven raised enough produce to feed three hundred people a year This is no have the peo pic and we fed them Not only did these men feed the three hundred people but they rais ed enough extra stuff to feed the thirty cows the hundred hogs and the two thousand head of poultry And in the deal were ten brood sows that did their part of contributing one hundred and seventynine pigs to the soil to insure no drain on the land The hogs and poultry were fed almost entirely on the scraps from the kitchen and skimmed milk What little we had to buy was paid for by products wcsold to our neigh bors It will be noted that we sent noth ing to market so we paid no com missions to middlemen None of our produce was lost by being spoil cd before it found a buyer and we paid out nothing for transportation commissions storage icing and What we could not use all of the to feed the live stock Here you qet an absolute economy which shows what a group of people can do as opposed to the individual istic plan of life s The expense of living is not so much in what men consume as in what they waste and destroy Wallpaper at 5 cents per roll and up in
