proper answer if persons would keep either comfortable or well In large cities the tatter is taken care of by the authorities to a great extent The go round regularly and each householder puts his can outside for collection and then his responsibility ceases This is well as far as it goes but it is only necessary to walk through the streets of most cities during some exceptionally hot spell to see how much better things could be made for every The overflowing and uncovered garbagecan is the rule rather than the exception It stands exposed to the hot sun for hours until the carts have finished in the wealthy and the business portions of the city It exudes melon rinds old shoes cornstalks and rotting green stuff and its odors are beyond des cription In many instances it is only too evident that the can is tilled and filled again and never one effort made to clean it from the time it is bought until it is worn out Luckily for humanity bad smells although unpleasant are not fatal If they were the world would be but poorly populated The odors from rotting garbage do not directly breed disease as people put it but they do give warning that the conditions arc prevailing which may cause sickness It is not thought the nostrils that one is injuried but through the aid of those myriads of flies that have settled on the garbage and that very soon arc coming back through the open doors and windows to light upon with soiled feet and wings What is the use of putting garbage outdoors and then letting thousands of flics bring it back itn mediately The flies are not alone in evil doing although they are the worst because there are so many of them and they have easy access to the kitchen The kitten that the baby is fondling may have foraged for its last meal in filth The moral of all this is a simple one All garbagecans should be of metal they should be emptied every day at least they should be kept tightly covered and should be scrupulously cleaned every twenty four hours This is not a difficult task A saucepan of boiling water and a lump of washingsoda will do it in a moment or a fire made with a few sheets of old newspaper in the bottom of the can and allowed to burn itself talk with one most enterprising citizens of Greenville one whose qcnius scientific talent and ability done a great deal in the way of advancement of our town and in building it up with the modern and facilities long need cd Me is an up lodatc man with far reaching proclivities his energies have been instrumental in the promotion and establishment of much that has made our town a desirable place to live in He seems a success in everything that he he masters everything that he grapples with he now holds an important position of trust which manages with ability and piccis ion and gives satisfaction to all concerned He is regarded by the people of Greenville as one of the foremost leaders in the enterprising industries of the town and county He said to me not long since There is a matter or an industry which I think ought to be placed cforc the people of Greenville and of the county for their It is an industry which would be lucrative and interesting if prop crly conducted It is not a new idea or a new adventure but one that has in vogue for almost time im memorial The industry to which I is frog culture frog raising and production the establishing of frog ranches for the propagation of what is known by the French as Green Owl and called the American people Bull Frog He said I think that such an industry could be made very profit able in some parts of the county in the Western and Northern sections of the county I have traveled over these sections and found bordering on the rivers numerous ponds la goons swamps and marshes not suitable for agricultural but would make splendid frog in which thousands of the Green Owl could be propagated frog meat and frog legs are the most noted and most desirable dish to adorn the table of a great many peo ple of the highest type and taste of the people of different countries and as a general thing frog meat higher than any other kind of meat put on the market and demands a grouter relish than any other He said That persons not addicted to the use of frog meat might at first somewhat timid and abashed at idea of eating frog but by tasting and eating a relish is easily and readily cultivated and a person will soon prefer frog to fish and children can eat frog with impunity and with safety there being no dan gerous bons to He said That the masses of the people of Greenville and the county might think the custom of eating frogs to be ridiculous but all those who have eaten frog or Green Owl in the cities and countries where it is practiced have a different It is custom that regulates taste if the people of Greenville and the county should habit themselves to frog diet they woultl soon have growing appetite and relish for frog meat He further said that he believed that it would be a capital idea if the directors of the water light company would utilize the reservoir and pond to some to frog culture that he thought there could be frogs enough produced the pond to supply the people pj Greenville with a rarity dish That the market price of frog meat was from 40 to 50 cents per pound always found a ready market that frog meat was much more healthy than hog or beef and that the county had reached the point where it could not produce the hogs and beeves required That he hoped that the enterprising people of the county would take the in hand and look after the frog indus try that it would certainly become a profitable business That it can be conducted with but little cost of labor and that many people of the county could easily produce frogs enough for home use that it would be much cheaper to raise frogs than hogs and get a much better cleaner meat and that all that necessary is for some and leading persons or company to the ball in motion and it will be but a little while until frogs
